After trying this place with a friend, we can report that it was very nice and very Hungarian. The service was better than the average Hungarian eatery and we all felt the food was worth the reasonable prices. It should be mentioned that if you saw it featured on the Weird Foods television programme, it is nothing like that at all.

This is an excellent Budapest breakfast spot. It can be a bit pricey, but it is worth it. They have numerous dishes worth savouring, and it is very centrally located in downtown. They also serve lunch and dinner.

Börze was refurbished and newly opened in 2017. It has a beautiful interior, some decent patio seating, and both table seating for ordering off a menu, as well as a deli counter for grabbing items on the go. They even have a few cookbooks for sale. As is typical in Hungary, there is a set lunch menu that is quite reasonably priced.

Stop in here simply for the decor. It is a lovely place. On top of this, they server creative and interesting food from breakfast to dinner. They also have lovely drinks. We really can't recommend it enough. Quality food in a quality place.

A favourite haunt by tour guides and tourists alike, never mind a fair share of locals, this is the go to place for the basic comfort food of Hungary. Most people get it to go, but you can also find seating upstairs.

Entertainment & Activities

Everything minituare, and a great place for model train enthusiasts. I love taking my family here, and it's just minutes away from the flat on Andrássy út. My son loves it, and there's lots to see and read about Hungary, as well as other parts of Europe. There's even information around about how life was in the communist past.

This is one of the best independent cinemas in Budapest, but you can often find screenings in English (with Hungarian subtitles of course). This is the perfect spot for cinephiles, and it's about a 10-15 minute walk away from the flat.

This is a great place to visit, especially if you remember arcades from your childhood! It mostly consist of a pinball machine collection, both past and present, but it also includes video arcade games, as well as few oddball games from different parts of the world. You pay a single entry fee, and then can play all of the games as many times as you like.

Sightseeing

If you are in Budapest, you have to at least see the famous Széchenyi Chain Bridge once. It's walkable, and this is recommended. From the Pest side (the side you are on in the flat), you can walk over, watch the Danube (Duna) flow a bit, and then make your way to the funicular for a trip up to the Castle District. The bridge is about a 20 minute stroll away from the flat, and you can make a good day of this full itinerary.

Technically not a basilica, St. Stephen's is still an impressive must see, and you can't get closer to the flat unless it was in the courtyard. A small donation will get you inside, and this is recommended. You can also go up to the outside of the dome and have a look around downtown. It is also possible to enjoy concerts here, so look for brochures as you head in.

The home of a recent and controversial memorial statue , this square birthed a beautiful response in a do-it-yourself Holocaust memorial. It is worth seeing for the remembrances that families of those lost to the Holocaust have set up here. There is also a motion activated water feature that is fun for both kids and adults. If you continue on to the square proper, you will see a hodgepodge of statues, memorials, and buildings, including President Regean, a Soviet WWII Memorial, the US Embassy, and the former home of Hungarian Television, where an uprising was centered in 2006. All this in a lovely park setting with two playgrounds.

Vajdahunyad Castle is a castle in City Park. It was built in 1896 as part of the Millennial Exhibition to celebrate 1,000 years of Hungary since the Hungarian Conquest of the Carpathian Basin in 895. There is a museum here, as well as places to get pastries and other bites to eat, never mind coffee. There are often fairs here, with numerous vendors running stalls selling just about anything and everything. The buildings represent numerous eras of architecture, as you will see upon your visit. It also sits next to a small pond, which is usable in both summer and winter. During summer, you can rent small boats, and in winter, of course, you can go ice skating.

Arts & Culture

This museum and its collection was started by a Hungarian during his travels to Asia. It is located on Andrássy Avenue at the end nearer Heroes' Square. It is housed in a wonderful building and has unique exhibitions. It obviously isn't Hungarian culture, but you can see what in Asia interested a Hungarian named Hopp Ferenc. I find this a very nice museum to visit with my young son and husband.

This is one of the best parks on the Pest side, and one of the newest as well. My family loves it. There are also numerous eateries around, so after the kids run off their energy, you can get a bite to eat. You can also find a list of all of the Hungarian Olympic medal winners. Another big bonus is toilets.

Margit Island (sziget in Hungarian) is one of the loveliest places to visit in urban Budapest. It has a jogging trail, a musical foutain, a zoo, a rose garden, and lots of drinks and food to keep one sated if they so choose. It is also one of the best places to people watch. The public transport boat also leaves from a stop here. Please note that the zoo is closed during the winter months, and is also not the main Budapest zoo. You can even visit the Platinus pool with thermal water and spas. It's a must see during your stay in Budapest.

This is a small, but beautiful park. It is well kept, and has both a playground for small children, as well as a separate area for exercise equipment and sports courts. There is also a large memorial to victims of the gulags. This park is especially nice in autumn, but is recommended all year round.

City Park is worth a visit. As of 2018, please note that there is extensive work being done to the park and the surrounding area. It's good for a walk, people watching, and there are multiple playgrounds for kids. There's also the zoo next to it, which can be visited in the same day you go to the park. Széchenyi thermal bath is also in the park, so you can make a day or two of it easy. There are also other sites to discover, as well as some of the more extensive green spaces in the city.

Gellért Hill is a 140-metre high dolomite rock rising above the Danube on the Buda side of Budapest. It has one of the best panoramic views in the city, looking from the west to Pest in the east over the river. If you like near-city hikes, this is the place for you. Afterwards, you can find places to have cake and coffee at once you are done with your hike.

Drinks & Nightlife

This is the best known ruin pub of all the ruin pubs. It can get a bit crowded, but it's worth a pop in at least to wet your whistle. They also run a wonderful farmers' market sometimes. This has mostly been during the warmer months and on Saturday mornings. They are also known to host musical events, and sometimes visiting celebrities stop in to have a few drinks. It's well worth a visit.

It is actually an old Ukrainian freighter that has been converted into a multi-level nightclub and concert venue. It's certainly worth checking out. They serve food as well as drinks, and you can almost always catch some Hungarian acts performing.

Getting Around

This is a major public transportation hub in Budapest, and very near my apartment. Three of the city's four metro lines converge here. From Deák Ference tér, you can walk to the apartment in about 5-10 minutes. The lines that service this square are the yellow metro line (1), the blue metro line (2), and the red metro line (3). Near the square itself are numerous places to grab a bite to eat or something to drink, and getting to other parts of Pest from here is about as simple as it gets.
