Great coffee, delicious slices (try the Biscoff - it's my fave!), great quality brunch / lunch options. Smashed Avo is usually always on the menu. Staff are all absolutely lovely. Many dining options including a little courtyard out the back, several small / private rooms and seating out the front on the main road. Note that they are closed on Monday's!

Great pub food options, call ahead to make a booking. You'll find Wallace roughly halfway between Ballarat and Ballan, so it's a great option after a long day exploring in Ballarat perhaps for dinner on your way back. We have been to the Wallace hotel for dinner with our family including young children and have found it to be a great experience with a wonderful menu. Fantastic quality seafood either to take back to the property to cook yourselves, or to purchase cooked fish and chips to enjoy either on the picnic tables out the front, or as takeaway. The quality of the fish and chips is top notch, however we sometimes find it hard to call through in advance with our order as the phone lines are busy. We prefer to pop in and order in person, whilst waiting for it to be cooked fresh we often nip across the road to the IGA to pick up essentials :)

Ballan IGA is a great local option for those who are visiting for a short stay. As with any IGA, you'll find it might be slightly more expensive than the larger Supermarkets, especially if you're doing a big shop but it's certainly something locals love given it saves us a 20-30 min drive to the closest major supermarket! IGA has a great selection including a liquor store, fruit and veg, deli, they sell firewood, ice and even recently added a dried flower bar!

We stumbled upon this place by following the road signs one day on an afternoon drive through Blackwood and what a find it was at the end of the road! They also have the most INCREDIBLE range of tarts, cakes, slices and pastries which they get delivered from 1816 bakehouse in Ballarat. Ballarat Tourist Attractions

One of VIC's best tourist attractions. Pan for gold in the 'river' (yes it's real & you can keep the gold that you find). Try the Raspberry drops (lollies), do old fashioned dress up photos & we absolutely would suggest to pay the extra fee for the underground mine tour (our fave is the one with the mini-train)!

You'll find several cafe's and playgrounds around the 6km 'lap' of the lake. Our kids suggest the Adventure Playground (a big wooden playground which you will find on the lake) and we love to visit 'Pipers' for a takeaway Babychino and Sausage roll.

Kryal Castle is Australia’s only medieval adventure park. A great day out for everyone! Try to make sure you catch a Jousting show (usually around midday or so), it's a great vibe. Kids will love this place. Kids can dress up as a knight, learn how to ride a horse, they have a few animals there like chickens, goats etc. They have a huge playground. Kids can participate in some activities for extra fees like learning how to create potions with a wizard or a witch.

Ballarat Wildlife Park has a few 'big ticket' attractions like the Tiger, Penguin & Crocodile enclosures, but we think the real perk is being the best place to get up close and personal with Kangaroo's (well that we've found in Aus!) The Kangroos are everywhere and very chilled, you can get right up close and personal with them for some incredible photos of yourselves or your kids with these beautiful creatures. Grab a $4 bag of Roo food on your way in & lap it up!

Tuki Trout farm is a seriously amazing place to visit with young family. The food is honestly incredible, as is the atmosphere and hospitality. You can rent fishing rods and have an experience with the family, walk around the farm and see animals, then head inside and sit in a booth or out on the verandah in a beautiful old building for your fantastic farm style feast. There are options for everyone on the menu however it is limited in comparison to what you might see in a tradition restaurant, but this is for the best as every single thing served is just top notch. This is probably one of my fave meals with a young family in the region that I can remember. Ask if they have any corn on cob when you’re there - best you’ll ever have! A personal fave of ours either first thing in the morning or even right at dusk. A 25 min drive from Ballan, but well worth it for the spectacular views the whole way around the Lake. Lake Daylesford is magnificent, you can admire the beautiful, unique houses all the way around and you'll find many spots for plenty of picturesque photos. The best part? You won't feel guilty after when you enjoy some of the incredible food that Daylesford has to offer as you'll have just done a 3km walk!

For a small entry fee you can explore the grounds, take photos in the lavender fields, go to the café (has a gorgeous shady outdoor area, sells lots of food options including woodfired pizza and many creative lavender options). You'll love pottering around the retail store. You'd be forgiven for thinking you were in a Swiss-Italian village. Many photo ops. Our kids love to play hide and seek in the lavender bushes and to say hello to the emu, geese, chickens and other animals on the farm.

We like to pop into Trentham on our way to Daylesford. It is a great drive to go from Ballan to Trentham via Greendale and Blackwood. In Trentham lots for you to do and see including: - Trentham Falls - You'll find an easy access to view point from the car park - Lots of cafes, wine bars and shops in Trentham - We love the Red Beard Bakery - a historic bakery with a 19th century scotch oven.

Ballan is a beautiful small town which has become a hive of activity over the past two years. Over the last two years we have had a gorgeous florist, several new boutique retail stores, a wine bar, a revamped “Ballan Great Western Hotel” which is owned and managed by the same people who own and manage the Farmers Arms in Daylesford. We’ve also got an ice-cream and lolly shop and we have a boutique art gallery that has just recently opened up. So much to explore in our area, it truly is a wonderful place to base yourself when exploring Victoria. We are also lucky to have plenty of options for great coffee and brunch with two brilliant cafes (Tim Plate Cafe and Zest), we also have many takeaway food options for those evenings you can’t be bothered to cook with fish and chips, pizza and kebabs all on the menu and some great Chinese food available on Saturday’s at the Fish and Chip shop as well. Ballan also has a mineral springs which is a short drive from our home, whilst less famous than those in Daylesford or Hepburn, you can still enjoy the health benefits from drinking at this mineral spring on the way to Bostock, hey why not go for a fish or a peaceful walk afterwards! The kids might like to check out our three playgrounds in the centre of Ballan and one skate park which is next to the footy oval.

Daylesford is known as the 'Spa capital' and certainly has something for everyone. It's a beautiful town with truly fantastic food and coffee options, many boutique retail shops and unique spaces such as art galleries, mineral spas and other to explore. Lake Daylesford itself is absolutely gorgeous and a shorter walk than Lake Wendouree in Ballarat. We personally find it is a beautiful and often less busy walk for those with kids.

Blackwood is another fave of ours to visit on the way to Trentham. It is a short 17 mins drive from our house. You'll enjoy the picturesque drive along Greendale-Trentham Road, through the Lerderderg State Park. Pop into the Blackwood Post Office to grab a coffee (They make a great coffee, with several milk options including oat and almond!) We recently discovered the GARDENS OF EARTH in Blackwood which is a local nursery with some history. They have a wonderful café there as well.

They sell local produce. - Gordon Hat and Boot Shoppes - A wonderful, unique shop for you to visit these guys produce and sell fine headwear and boots. All handmade locally within Australia and from NZ. Something for everyone, no matter your taste. Check out their website here: https://gordonhatshop.com.au/ - Little Duck Co are a local online small business kids retailer based in Gordon. If you're visiting with a little one and find yourself stuck and in need of something for your children, they are usually very responsive and open to doing delivery or collection from their house in Gordon (we've often found ourselves urgently contacting them for a Bibs dummy when we have suddenly realised we've lost all of ours!), check out their website here: https://littleduckandco.com/

Ballarat is famous as a Gold rush town. In fact, you can learn more about this history by visiting Sovereign Hill, a local 'living museum' where you can walk around and participate in a 'town' where the employees dress up in character from the gold rush days. Ballarat has something for everyone. Walk up and down Sturt Street visiting some of the many boutique retailers, visit one of the many eateries, bars or cafe's on Armstrong Street, Sturt Street or in the surrounding streets and alley ways. Check out Lake Wendouree and see the famous black swans, or visit the Botanic Gardens to view the full collection of the statues of the 'Prime Ministers Heads.' Drive through Ballarat Central and marvel at the many period style homes which have been renovated and restored to their previous glory.
