Amphitheater The most famous and important monument, the starting and ending point of every sightseeing tour is the Amphitheater, popularly called the Arena of Pula, which was once the site of gladiator fights. It was built in the 1st century AD during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, at the same time as the magnificent Colosseum in Rome. The ground plan is elliptical, the longer axis measuring about 130 m and the shorter one about 100 m. Gladiator fights took place in the central flat area called the arena, while the spectators could sit on the stone tiers or stand in the gallery. It is believed that the Amphitheater could seat about 20,000 spectators. Local limestone was used for its construction. In the Middle Ages it was the site of knights tournaments and fairs. Today, it is the venue for many different events – Pula Film Festival, various concerts, opera, ballet, sports competitions… since its capacity is about 5000 spectators. Every week during the summer months, the Arena hosts gladiator fights as part of the historical and entertainment spectacle “Spectacvla Antiqva”. The underground passages, once used by the gladiators, nowadays host a regular exhibition of viticulture and olive growing in Istria in ancient times. The exhibits include reconstructions of machines once used for the production of olive oil and wine (mills, presses, vessels) and amphorae used for storing and transporting olive oil and wine. The Amphitheater is situated outside the old city walls because of its size and geographical configuration. The road that leads to the center was constructed during Emperor Vespasian, after whom it was named – Via Flavia. Even today it represents one of the main city roads.

The tables and benches are simple cut logs or stones stacked, the “floor” is a bed of straw. Scattered throughout the bar then, there are the bizarre rides like a big slide made of ropes and wooden wheels, swings hanging from the branches of the trees that create the structure, large swivel wheels and so much more. National Park Brijuni Brijuni consist of 14 islands and islets, among which the biggest is Veliki Brijun. Except its beautiful nature, the archipelago has numerous dinosaur footprints. It was declared the national park as well. The Brijuni Islands, located in the south of the western Istrian coast, has a total of 14 islands and islets, making it the best indented and largest group of islands on the Istrian area. Together with the surrounding sea and underwater life, Brijuni was declared the national park in 1999 in light of its exceptional value. The largest of the islands is Veliki Brijun. Its coast as well as those of other islands are mainly short and rocky, although easily reachable. Geologically and geomorphologically, Brijuni represent an extension of west Istria. It is not surprising that 10000 years ago they were an integral part of the Istrian land. There are numerous dinosaur footprints on Brijuni proving their existence on the island some 160 million years ago. They can be seen on four sites on Veli Brijun. The Brijuni dinosaurs come from the Cretaceous period, the last period before their extinction. More than 200 footprints of amazing reptiles can be seen in the Cretaceous park. Although the remains were discovered back in 1925, detailed explorations were carried out as late as the 1990s, when they were found to belong to Theropoids, a bipod carnivore, and aggressive and fast carnivore from the Coelurosaria group. Animal kingdom on the islands has been enriched by numerous imported species. Apart from the native species such as the rabbits or various birds, one can seen exotic and less exotic animals which have become accustomed to the climate including deer, llama, zebra or an elephant. Apart from fauna, the flora also plays an important role. Mediterranean climate with lots of sunshine and warmth and sufficient air humidity facilitated dense vegetation of native plants such as holm oak, strawberry tree and myrrh. They are supplemented by various types of pines, sequoia, eucaliptus and fir trees, not characteristic for the Brijuni islands. The most famous among the Brijuni flora is the Old Olive, one of the oldest on the Mediterranean. It still produces olives for making the olive oil even after 1600 years of its life.

The small Roman Theater in Pula was probably built in the 1st century on the eastern slope of the Pula hill at the foot of the old castrum. It has occupied a significantly larger space than that is visible today, because archaeological research has not been completed. It is logically located in the east of the slope, which has good conditions for maintaining plays. The use of a slope of the theater hill was not a characteristic of Roman but Greek theater. The theater space was divided into an architectural scene and a beggar played by actors, orchestra and a theater that could accommodate up to 5,000 spectators. The remains of the foundations of the stage building and parts of the semicircular theater, which were partly reconstructed, remained in the small Roman theater. They led to the theater, and still lead today, a double door. Below the theater is a building of a former German gymnasium, which houses an archeological museum of Istria since 1930 with a rich fundus of prehistoric, ancient and early medieval archeological monuments from all over Istria at the Archeological Museum also houses the modest remains of relief from the front of the theater building. In addition to the small Roman theater, Pula had an amphitheater and the great Roman Theater Extra Murros, ie outside the city ramparts in the 1st century. Although this theater was much larger, and a larger number of spectators could have received, it failed in the Middle Ages, and much of the remains used Antoine de Ville in the 17th century to build the Pula Kaštela
