A little guide to let you know about all the wonderful places to explore whilst staying at Hatterrall Farmhouse.
From the doorway, head out through the gate at the back door and up the farm track, follow the footpath through the first and second field, keeping to the right until you reach a gate in the top right, head through and out onto the old mountain road, the Offa's Dyke Path at the base of Hatterrall Hill.
The brave may wish to scale the mountain (when the fern allows) or, by following the Offa's Dyke Path until you reach a rhiw (path carved out by sheep), you can gently climb the hill to Hatterrall Ridge summit where breathtaking views await!
On a clear day one can see the Severn Bridge near Bristol, as far as the Malvern Hills, and out to Clee Hill, Shropshire.
By walking directly over the hill from Longtown, you will eventually reach Llanthony Priory where you can stop of a drink and a bite to eat.
Walking east, you can follow the loop around to Pandy, and walking west will take you all the way to Hay on Wye, or you can bear right and come down off the hill via the Cats Back.

Take a route steeped in history to get there, follow the same paths the Augustine monks once did, who farmed on our side of the hill and would walk over the summit to return to the abbey on the other side.
If you're tired of walking however, it's a short drive from Hatterrall Barn and the car park is free. Entrance to the ruins is also free - don't forget to stop for coffee and cake in the Priory Hotel.
Another fabulous local walk that we can't not mention is the Black Hill, locally named the Cat's Back!
One of the most spectacular walks in the Black Mountains, this really is a glorious stroll boasting incredible views.
After a steep initial hike, you soon reach the flat, narrow summit of Crib y Garth. Hit the trig point and return (roughly 3 miles_ or continue on and walk the loop down through the valley back to the car park (roughly 5 miles).
Alternatively, if you're feeling super brave, or are enjoying the view too much, you can just keep waling until you return to Hatterrall Barn, in around 14 miles time, passing over Hay Bluff.
The Cat's Back is a four mile drive from the cottage, situated at the top of Longtown, with plenty of parking at the base.

One of the most spectacular walks in the Black Mountains, this really is a glorious stroll boasting incredible views.

Another beautiful mountain is the Sugar Loaf, which provides a spectacular backdrop to the market town of Abergavenny.
One of the highest peaks in the Black Mountains, the Sugar Loaf offers panoramic views and a gentler walk, with criss-crossing paths from which to ascend the summit.
From the top you can see the Black Mountains to the north, the Cotswolds to the east, as far as the Brecon Beacons and Pen y Fan in the west and the Bristol Channel to the south.
Last but not least is the lovely gentle Garway Hill. A 3.8 mile circular loop starts on Garway Common and includes a gradual climb to the summit.
When the weather is kind, Garway Hill offers 360 degree views of five counties and is a great spot to have a picnic. If you time it right, there are stunning sunsets at the top of the hill.
