Feel like treating yourself? Dug & Betty's has amazing ice cream. Dug & Betty's Ice Creamery is the latest brain child of Chef Fern Kirouac. It's located in the heart of Winnipeg's French quarter, Saint-Boniface; across the street from his other culinary success, InFerno's Bistro. It was named after his cherished basset hounds (who are the unofficial ambassadors). Also named after the duo are creations like the Dashing Dug Sundae and the Bad Betty Sundae.

The Forks, located at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, has been a meeting place for over 6,000 years. Indigenous peoples traded at The Forks, followed by European fur traders, Scottish settlers, railway pioneers and tens of thousands of immigrants. Over the last 30 years, we have transformed this abandoned railyard into The Forks, Winnipeg’s foremost destination, with this set of goals in mind: The Forks shall be developed as a meeting place a special and distinct, all-season gathering and recreational place at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, through a mixed-use approach including recreational, historical and cultural, institutional and supportive commercial uses. Over 4 million visitors come to The Forks each year and more than 1,200 people work on this site. The Forks contributes over $126 million a year to the local economy, and is financially self-sufficient - we do not rely on government funding to operate.

When we opened to the public in 1967, Le Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum (MSBM) was referred to as “the lived-in museum”. The original Grey Nuns’ Convent had indeed been home to many people over the course of its more than 100 years of use (including Grey Nuns, novices, the elderly, hospital and hospice patients, orphans and families in need) and welcomed guests (boys and girls for day school, and later nursing school students) daily. Our building is the oldest in Winnipeg and it supported and touched many, many families as Saint-Boniface grew from a small catholic mission, to a city of its own. Over time, Le Musée’s reputation has evolved as its collections, capacity and significance grew. Recognized as a keeper of Francophone and Métis heritage, it is an unavoidable reference point for researchers, a key experience for teachers and students, a must-see for tourists, a touchstone for our communities’ families and a wonderful part of Winnipeg’s cultural landscape.

A beautiful place to sit and enjoy some great views and peace and quiet. In 1818, newly arrived Rev. Norbert Provencher and two colleagues constructed the first church on land on the east bank of the Red River donated by Hudson's Bay Company's Thomas Douglas, 5th Earl of Selkirk. The small log building measured 50 feet by 30 feet and served as chapel, residence and school. It was soon replaced with a larger building. In 1832, Provencher, now bishop, built the first cathedral. "The bells of St. Boniface" are mentioned in John Greenleaf Whittier's 1859 poem "The Red River Voyageur". "On December 17, 1891, Whittier's 84th birthday, Archbishop Taché had "the bells of the Roman mission" rung in the poet's honour."[1] Between 1908 facade and back of new cathedral On December 14, 1860, a fire destroyed "Provencher’s cathedral". In 1862, Bishop Taché went to Quebec to raise funds to rebuild the cathedral in stone.[2] This second cathedral was somewhat smaller; the bell tower was completed eight years later.

Healthcare

Our B&B is very close to St. Boniface Hospital and can be reached by walking in about 10minutes if you have a loved one staying there. St. Boniface Hospital, a work of charity of the Sisters of Charity of Montreal “Grey Nuns”, is a Catholic tertiary health care facility affiliated with the University of Manitoba. Marguerite d’Youville, founder of the Grey Nuns, dedicated her life to the poor, revealing the compassionate love of God and trust in Divine Providence. Sharing in the charisma of Marguerite d’Youville, and in her innovation, leadership and pioneering, the Grey Nuns and committed laity continue to witness God’s love and compassion in the care of those they serve. St. Boniface Hospital has been providing leadership in health care on behalf of Manitobans since it was first established by the Grey Nuns in 1871. Located at the fork of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, we were the first hospital in Western Canada, established in St. Boniface as a small four-bed facility to meet the health care needs of the people of the new province of Manitoba (founded in 1870). From these humble beginnings we’ve grown to become one of Canada’s leading patient care and research facilities, establishing a reputation for leadership in the process. Our growth is a direct result of our ongoing efforts to improve the level of service we provide to the people and communities we serve. Towards this end we have entered into partnership with numerous organizations, facilities and interest groups, in our continual quest to provide Manitobans with the highest quality health care possible. As one of Manitoba’s largest health care facilities, St. Boniface maintains a campus comprised of more than 180 departments and services, located in seven separate buildings and situated on 20 acres of land. We also operate several satellite facilities located at off campus sites, and maintain close relationships with other health facilities and well as the health facilities and agencies of the Grey Nun network.
