Carrabelle

All about Carrabelle
Carrabelle is a quint fishing village with no traffic lights or fast food restaurants, just one grocery store and no crowds. It is very laid back and friendly and unpretentious. "The Pearl" is located in the residential section of Carrabelle just a few blocks from the bay and the local shops , restaurants, marina and public boat ramps. The dog friendly public beach has bathroom facilities, cookout pavilions and free parking. The Pearl's neighborhood itself is interesting as it's very much a typical old Florida working neighborhood. No two houses look alike, no HOA's and neighbors get along no matter what their personal styles may be. It's not unusual to see historic homes next door to trailers and to see the trades of a fishing/hunting village displayed in front yards. Yet, it is a very quiet peaceful neighborhood that is tied to it's history of the water that has provided the life of this village for 140 years. Carrabelle is surrounded by national forest and wildlife abound. It is not uncommon to see Fl Black bear, hawks, owls, foxes, eagles and deer. Hiking and bird watching are popular outings. I love to sit on the back porch of "The Pearl" and hear nothing but the chickens crowing in the morning and the owls hooting at night. Then there are the beaches, sunsets, watersports and fishing. Early walks along the uncrowded beaches will almost guarantee dolphin sightings. The fishing is some of the best in the state. Dog Island just a few miles off shore is known for shelling and crabbing. Kayaking and paddle boarding in perfect in the calm waters surround by barriers islands. Bicycle, kayak, paddleboard, and boat rentals are available in Carrabelle and charter fishing is very popular.

Lots of hiking trails. There is a visitor center on HWY 98 near the Franklin Inn on Hwy 98. https://www.fdacs.gov/.../Tate-s-Hell-State-Forest The Legend of Tate's Hell A tale that has been told for many years recounts how Tate's Hell Swamp got its name. Local legend has it that a farmer by the name of Cebe Tate, armed with only a shotgun and accompanied by his hunting dogs, journeyed into the swamp in search of a panther that was killing his livestock. Although there are several versions of this story, the most common describes Tate as being lost in the swamp for seven days and nights, bitten by a snake, and drinking from the murky waters to curb his thirst. Finally he came to a clearing near Carrabelle, living only long enough to murmur the words, "My name is Cebe Tate, and I just came from Hell." Cebe Tate's adventure took place in 1875 and ever since, the area has been known as Tate's Hell, the legendary and forbidden swamp.

This is a great way to spend a few hours! We had so much fun exploring and learning. Open Mon-Fri - 9:00am-5:00pm Sat-Sun - 10:00am-5:00pm 222 Clark Dr, Panacea, FL 32346 P.O. Box 237 222 Clark Drive Panacea, Florida 32346 ADMISSION $12.00 for adults (12+ yrs) $11:00 Seniors (65+) $10.00 Children (3-11 yrs.) At Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory in Panacea, you begin to get a better sense of what’s really out there. On a quiet back street between the highway and the bay, we house a collection of sea water tanks and aquariums. Water bubbles and flows in a swirl that sustains unique collections of the bizarre and the beautiful. Unlike most big public aquariums that emphasize porpoises and big fishes, we focus on creatures such as seahorses and hermit crabs, emerald eyed spiny box fish, electric rays and red and white spotted calico crabs – just a few of the the endless living treasures of north Florida’s still shining coast. Children must be supervised. Certain tanks are “Looking Only” while others you are allowed to touch. When you purchase your ticket to the aquarium, you will be informed on which tanks are touching and not touching. The tanks will also have signs indicating whether they are “Looking” or “Touching.” Do not put your hands near the water or on the rim of the tank for the “Looking” tanks! Our animals associate people with food and may have sharp teeth. Make sure children are always accompanied by an adult when in the aquarium.

Beaches

Some of the closer beaches. Carrabelle beach is just minutes from the Pearl. Morning low tide walks are a favorite. St George island is a more typical beach with shops and restaurants on the island and large white sand beaches. Both beaches are dog friendly, leash required.
