Brew Intelligentsia coffee. Great paintings by Studio AM. Outdoor tables in the back. AND you can bring your dog inside. This is my favorite coffee shop in South Side, and I may have a minor addiction to their Earl Grey sandwich cookies.

Purveyors of the famed Pittsburgh sandwich with everything between two slices of bread, including the fries and slaw. I get the capicola and egg. This sandwich will probably clog a small artery. Side note: people tend to smoke cigarettes in this location. Head to the Primanti's in Oakland if you would prefer to escape any secondhand smoke.

A casual restaurant focused on the exploration of street food. A trip to the South Side now can temporarily transport eaters to Lima for pan con chicharron, Istanbul for balik ekmek, or across the state to Philadelphia for a roast pork and broccoli rabe sandwich. Chef Christie adds to the journey: He lays out the menu by noting a specific neighborhood in the city where each item is found.

Recommended with reservations: you want to have an incredibly weird, strange, wild night where you enter a blacklight-lit bar and are handed a name tag, a highlighter, a mini plastic dinosaur, and a candy necklace. Most shots and drinks are lit on fire. Featured in Wiz Khalifa's "Work Hard Play Hard" video if you want a visual reference. Probably best to go late with a group of friends. I can't believe that I'm even telling you about this place.

Parks & Nature

Bike or run along the Mon and continue down the river -- you're biking on part of the Greater Allegheny Passage Trail and could make it to D.C. -- or hop across the Hot Metal Bridge to loop back to Downtown. Great for just a quick jog along the South Side of the Mon, too! There are some sculptures and testaments to the Steel industry along the way. If you can make a day of it and make it to McKeesport, you'll be rewarded with incredible views down the river and pass the Thompson Mill, one of the few steel mills left in the region.

The Cathedral of Learning is an iconic, 42-story Gothic structure that is the centerpiece of the University of Pittsburgh. Look east from your bedroom window and you can spy this tower. The main common room looks and feels like Hogwarts (they even light the fireplaces during the winter and finals week). Take a tour of the Nationality Rooms - 30 rooms decorated in the style of a unique country or cultural group in the style of the University's founding in 1787. Quo Vadis is the tour group located on the first floor. Take the elevators to the 35th or 36th floors (the Honors College) for a beautiful view across the East End and most of Pittsburgh.

Historic market district with many ethnic foods, artisan shops, wholesalers, and groceries. Formerly a major shipping and warehouse center, this repurposed neighborhood is an amazing place to shop for food and more. If you're here on a Saturday, head to the strip early. Parking can be tough, but walking through the bustling streets is a real treat. Head into Pennsylvania Macaroni Company (Penn Mac), and grab a number for the cheese counter. I also love Enrico Biscotti, La Prima Coffee, and Wholey's Fish Market. Buy some fresh flowers, eat chicken off a stick from a sidewalk vendor, or grab a taco from La Reyna. Sometimes there's an oyster shucker in front of Wholeys, and you can pour some hot sauce or mignonette on a freshly-shucked oyster and slurp it down on the sidewalk.
