The Historical Museum of Crete was founded in 1953, and is housed in a neoclassical building of exceptional architectural merit. It tells the story of seventeen centuries of local history and culture, from the early Christian centuries up to modern times. Byzantine art and culture, the periods of Venetian and Ottoman rule, the age of revolutions on the course to union with Greece, World War II, the Battle of Crete and the resistance, as well as Cretan rural folk culture are all highlighted via selected exhibits combined with a wealth of visual material and multimedia. The finest exhibits are two El Greco paintings, "The Baptism of Christ" (1567) and "View of Mt. Sinai and the Monastery of St. Catherine" (1570), the only works by the artist now on Crete. The Nikos Kazantzakis is in a special collection including personal effects and manuscripts by the Cretan writer. Visits begin at a separate section featuring a large mock-up of mid-17th century Chandax (Heraklion). The Museum has an audio guide system, a café and a shop. Summer Opening Hours (April - October) Monday - Saturday: 09.00 - 17.00 Sundays & Public Holidays: Closed Winter Opening Hours (November - March) Monday - Saturday: 09.00 - 15.30 Sundays & Public Holidays: Closed Admission Adults: 5.00 € Concessions [pupils & students, senior citizens]: 3.00 € Children 12 and under: Admission free

The "Morosini" fountain or Liontaria and the relevant aquedact were a significant technical and aesthetic achievement. The general supervisor Francesco Morosini with the engineers Zorzi Corner, Rafaello Monnani and Francesco Basilicata brought the water from the foothills of the Giuhta with the construction of various technical works, upon which the water delivery duct was built. Krini (the fountain) was inaugurated with a great official celebration in 1628.

The club of the Venetian nobility in Handakas always played an important role in the city’s governmental and social life. The building was two-storied with a rectangular floor plan and had an open loggia on the main level. It was designed in 2 different architectural styles Doric on the main level and Ionic on the first floor. The building was destroyed and re-built 3 times; Francesco Morosini rebuilt the Loggia in the place where it survives today, and added a new building for the storage of arms, the Armeria, where the Municipality office is housed today.
