Address: Kidathineon 41, Athina 105 58 With its walls of colorful glass bottles, this charming little bar can be elusive—nestled deep in downtown Athens, in the warren of streets that make up the Plaka. Day or night, Brettos (pronounced Vrettos in Greek) is frequented by locals and tourists alike—the oldest distillery in Athens. While you can opt for beer, wine, homemade moonshine, or perhaps a cocktail, you might kick yourself later for passing up the chance to have an ouzo, Greece’s signature anise-flavored liquor, in such a storied watering hole. Who knows where that first sip might lead?

Address: Voulis 35, 10557 Athens Japanese Pub & Grill. Birdman is an intimate, no-fuss, no frills, Japanese pub + grill, inspired by far yet locally rooted. Tucked in an alley near Syntagma square, the open kitchen-counter specializes in neck-to-tail yakitori, meat and seafood kushiyaki, and a butcher’s selection of dry-aged niku-style meats, ethically- sourced from rare traditional breeds, prepared in front of the customer on a robata- style grill. On a daily changing mood, the kitchen serves an array of beef nigiri, juicy katsu sandos, and Greece-meets-Japan donburi bowls with local ingredients such as lamb, gambari shrimp and almirikia greens. Last but not least, Wagyu beef ramen, shoyu-style, is a local favorite, as a daily special. Chef, butcher Ari Vezene, pays homage to the Japanese culture, while respecting the Greek culinary heritage and honoring the promise of freshness found in ingredients such as Lakonia oranges, Chalkidiki olives, Aegean uni and, of course, free-range chickens from the island of Crete.

Address: Keramikou 49, Athina 104 36 This neo-taverna in the Metaxourgeio district is a favorite for its reinvented Greek classics, such as slow-cooked octopus with pickled okra and sardines grilled in grape leaves, paired with affordable wines and party beats. It’s always fun stumbling upon places the locals frequent. If you’re in Athens, venture beyond Monaistaraki/the Plaka and all the typical souvlaki joints to the Metaxourgeio neighborhood. Here, you’ll find Seychelles—described by Buzzfeed as “one of the 31 places you should eat around the world before you die.” Here, not only are the clientele and interior space hip, but the menu is fun and creative with simple but elevated dishes such as chickpeas with feta and mint, tomato and zucchini fritters, and a fantastic selection of cheeses from all over Greece. The pappardelle with kavourmas (cured pork) was jaw-droppingly delicious! Do yourself a favor, and make the trek out this way ... take the metro to Kerameikos, then walk or grab a cab for under five Euros. You’ll be glad you did. Ask about the daily specials and always book ahead (in warmer weather, ask for a table outside on Avdi Square).

Address: Veranzerou 5, Athina 106 77 I Kriti (Greek for “Crete”) has been serving some of Athens’ best Cretan cuisine long before the island's hearty cuisine became fashionable in the mid-2000s. A charming, utterly unpretentious tavern tucked into a nondescript arcade passage near Omonia Square, Kriti serves fare that will leave you reeling with pleasure—dakos (barley bruschetta topped with grated tomato, crumbled myzithra cheese, olives, and pickled samphire), smoked Cretan pork, snails in garlic, Crete-made sausages, spicy cheese dip, and baked pies, all at excellent prices and with real Cretan hospitality (the owners don’t really speak English, but it doesn’t matter). Expect to wait for a table but then, once seated, to spend some time here. And don’t forget to wash each dish down with some Cretan raki, a strong grape distillate similar to grappa.

Address: 4 Diogenous, Plaka, 105 56 In Greek, platanos is a plane or sycamore tree and you guessed it, this taverna is named after the trees that stretch their leafy branches over the tables on a peaceful square. This place is as old Plaka as it gets, with classic dishes and a lot of history; it’s been around since 1932 and the likes of Henry Miller and Patrick Leigh Fermor have enjoyed a meal or two here. Inside, karagiozi (shadow puppet) figures and old photographs line the walls, chequered tablecloths cover the tables and delicious aromas swirl through the air. Go traditional, even cliché here. Dip your bread into tzatziki, drown your Greek salad in olive oil and crush in the feta, and choose from the roll call of combinations that come with beef or lamb. For the non-meat eaters, there’s plenty to devour, from gigantes (giant beans cooked in tomato sauce) to gemista (tomatoes and peppers stuffed with rice and herbs). And since you’re going all-out cliché, order the house retsina. This Greek wine is making an international comeback; at Platanos, it’s as authentic as can be.

Address: Kidathineon 21, Athina 105 58 Traditional tavernas in Plaka are a dime a dozen, but truth be told, not many of them are as authentic as they claim to be. Saita is a rare exception. This effortlessly quaint taverna sits on the quieter end of souvenir-lined Kydathineon Street. There are a handful of shaded tables on the pavement, overlooking the courtyard of the Byzantine Metamorphosis church. In the winter, the action moves down to the cosy basement, where Greek comfort food is turned out from the tiny kitchen. Their most famous speciality is bakaliaros skordalia (battered salt cod served with a fierce garlic dip), but everything is delicious. The grilled lamb chops, baked aubergine with feta, and crisp little meatballs are all highly recommended.

Address: Platia Mitropoleos 4, Athens 10556 Not everything in Plaka has to be about tzatziki and moussaka. Seafood is a staple of the city and this restaurant is right outside the Metropolitan Cathedral, with tables spilling out into the scenic square. Barbounaki (Greek for red mullet) is the fifth taverna in the city that chef George Papaionnou has opened. His upscale claim-to-fame is Papaioannou restaurant in Piraeus. At Barbounaki, he makes his culinary art accessible to all. Focussing on seafood mezedes (plates to share) rather than large fish on the grill or more complicated dishes, this place gives you the opportunity to try everything. What’s a must here is, of course, is the fried red mullet. The steamed mussels, grilled octopus, calamari, and haloumi cheese are all delicious. The sea bass carpaccio is fabulous and if you’re lucky and crayfish are in season, ask them to throw a few on the grill.

Address: Dioskouron 13, Athina 105 55 The magic of this place is its location. The little tables are separated from the Ancient Agora by a thin green fence. During the day, you can sightsee right from your seat, with an iced coffee and a slice of freshly baked pie. At night, you can gaze at the lit-up temple of Hephaestus over an ouzo and meze. The lunch and dinner menus are pretty basic, from a souvlaki platter to makaronia me kima (the Greek version of spaghetti Bolognese). It’s all about the laid-back atmosphere and incredible setting, rather than the food. Sit back and people watch, or join the locals in animated conversation. The Agora is, after all, where it all used to happen back in the days of the ancient Greeks.
