Favorite Hikes

Forest Park is one of Portland’s Crown Jewels. It is unsophisticated but mature, loved and gives back to its visitors in every season. Be you a walker, runner, hiker, naturalist, birder or city dweller, you will find new opportunities to enjoy its serenity. It can be busy but rarely crowded throughout the day. For the ambitious hiker, from our place you can hike up through the rose garden to the arboretum, stop and see the redwood observation deck, then along the Wildwood trail, go down across the bridge over Burnside street, then up to the Pittock mansion to catch stunning city and mountain views. (WC) From there, at about 3.5m, return by switch backing hillside streets of lovely Kings Heights homes (next to the gatekeeper's house, take NW Pittock Drive to the vehicle block at NW Monte Vista Terrace) and seek out your favorite route down back to W Burnside and SW Vista (5.25m) Or for the more ambitious, return to the Wildwood trail and descend through a massive hillside of timber of Macleay Park to the NW Cornell Road where (0.2m detour to your west) you'll find the Portland Audubon Society (WC) and Pittock Bird Sanctuary. Picking back up the Wildwood trail across Cornell, you are mostly descending to the Balch Creek but have several routes from which to choose depending on how far you want to go. Wildwood converges with the Lower Macleay Trail then, at the Witches Castle (freaky burned out stone house), you can choose to venture up the Wildwood a bit more or take the Lower Macleay trail down along Balch creek to the Lower Macleay trailhead (0.8m). At the trailhead, you can take the staircase up to NW Thurman or walk up NW Upshur, either way will land you counting down the cross streets to 23rd, near the end of the alphabet district. Cafes, boulangeries, pubs, a food pod, pizza parlors and various eateries abound nearby to offer you sustenance. (at almost 7 miles, you've earned it). New Seasons Market is also near to offer you a full service grocery and market. From NW 23rd and NW Thurman, it is just a (mostly) flat mile back to ours.

While the Wildwood trail skirts along the edge of the Arboretum, Hoyt offers its own separate (less ambitious) loops of trails for a more casual walker/hiker to enjoy a more cultivated experience of arbor-amore. Trails include dirt, asphalt and some duff, making it a crossover option for hikers/runners. Portland's famous Wildwood Trail runs through the Arboretum and swings by the famed Redwood Observation Deck (where you often see Wedding photographers). The ambitious walkers can go to the edge (of the arboretum, cross the (new) lovely bridge and hike up to the Pittock Mansion for spectacular views. The Washington Park loop bus connects visitors between the Zoo, the Hoyt, and Rose Garden/Japanese garden.

Sometimes you want an activity that puts you close to the airport. The grotto will give you a last opportunity to suck in the oxygen enriched tree gardens that is quintessentially Northwest. The upper garden charges a fee but the lower garden is free to enjoy. A great stop if clouds obscure Mt Hood and your vista shots are disappointing.

If you are looking for that one last photo shoot of Mt Hood (Wy’east as the native Americans called him), the Rocky Butte hilltop is a short detour from the highway on your way to or from the airport.

Hard to have to explain why this place is so special. No better sanctuary on a Portland rainy day. Yes, it is lovely year round but in the late fall, early spring or just after a dusting of snow? It is quiet and ensures connection to all living things.

Food scene

Fabulous cafes and eating establishments are an easy walk from our place. Our favorite cafes include Cafe Umbria (1/4m), Fehrenbacher Hof (1/4m), Elephant's Delicatessen (1//4m), Ken's Artisan Bakery (1/2m), and St. Honoré Bakery (1m). For weekend brunch, head over to Harvey Milk street, near Powell's books. From there you can choose from Kenny & Zuke's Jewish Deli, The Roxy, Cheryl's (12th & Washington), Urban Creperie (SW Morrison/13th), and many more. Dessert-y places over there are Petunia's Pies and Pastries, Ruby Jewel ice cream, and Saint Cupcake. Over on the north side of W Burnside in the Pearl District, there are too many to mention but our dinner mainstays are Andina with their Sacsayhuamán (say SexyWoman) cocktail, or Piazza Italia, then Cool Moon Ice Cream. In the alphabet district, you cannot go wrong with brunch at Nell's (< 1m), but make a reservation. We cannot forget to mention all the wine bars, (eg. Bar Diane, Pope House) or brewery's (Kells', McMenamin's) along NW 21st and 23rd street, and the smaller, niche and less showy restaurants. Opportunities abound close to ours. If you take the MAX out to Beaverton, you have some great options as well. If you are on foot, get off at Beaverton Central and you will be close to many great suburban options there at the Beaverton Round. All that said, we can say all this and more for east side restaurants in areas around N Williams, NE Alberta and SE Hawthorne. I'd advise you to look at current online reviews because there are happening places popping up all the time and we do not have our fingers centered on pulses there.
One of our favorite places in Portland, St. Honoré offers typical boulangerie / pâtisserie faire. It is not he place to go to for a massive brunch. It is a meat-light break-fast opportunity to enjoy a coffee or pot of tea and savor phenomenal bread (get a ficelle) with some jam or maybe an almond crossant. It works great for a last afternoon sweet indulgence. Tables outside and chess played (pre-Covid) on Saturday afternoons. This is where you want to be to watch the Tour de France.

The quarter boule here cannot be beat. It sells out every weekend by one and it makes the best bread/butter or toast or grilled cheese. Grabbing a quarter boule on your way out of town is a terrific way to bring Portland home with you. (Be sure to ask them to slice it if you so prefer).

The whole area around the Beaverton round offers restaurants, a food cart pod, and a short walk across (historical) downtown beaverton gets you to the Saturday morning farmer’s market (Mar-Oct) and adjacent I press I’ve Beaverton City Library. At the round, the night market offers additional options in the summer. It is lively and fun and there are sometimes performances (not buskers). If you tred too far, look for buses that can return you to a MAX hub (Sunset Transit Center or Beaverton Transit center) or back downtown.

Our favorite Portland restaurant. This lace has a bar with bites and a full service restaurant. Fusion Peruvian is the best way to describe it. Hard to imagine anyone not liking something on this menu but it does take some reading. Be sure to order sacsayhuamán cocktail (say “sexy woman”). Andina’s mixologists have won awards, this is not the place to find a natty light. You really really should have reservations.

Running routes

Runs that can double as hikes.
Wildwood can offer the visiting runner a set of hill climbs or a long undulating path. It juices you with O2 the whole way, in every season. It stays cool on hot summer days and protected from winter winds. From world renowned marathoners to grey haired fit grandmothers, the 32 mile stretch through Forest Park offers every runner /hiker their opportunity to challenge or easy run it.

No umbrellas

For three seasons, you could see Portland rain. But Portland rain is not rain, it is, 95 times out of 100, mist. Light mist, heavy mist, but mist. Carrying an umbrella becomes burdensome unless you are on a film shoot and need every hair perfect (then someone else carries it!). Suggestion would be to pull out that hat and throw it in the luggage. If you only have a baseball cap, head over to Powell’s or the Portland Saturday market and find something fashionably PDX to adorn your crown. But in any case, unless it is midsummer, be sure to bring a jacket with a hood.
