The Shambles is an old street in York, England, with overhanging timber-framed buildings, some dating back as far as the fourteenth century. It was once known as The Great Flesh Shambles, probably from the Anglo-Saxon Fleshammels, the word for the shelves that butchers used to display their meat. As recently as 1885 thirty-one butchers' shops were located along the street, but now none remain.

The heart of the town is centred around an attractive market square with a variety of independent shops, including butchers, bakers, greengrocers, a fishmongers, delicatessen and several boutiques. There is a wide selection of small coffee shops, pubs and restaurants serving food and drink to suit all tastes and budgets ideal for a family night out or catching up with friends. There’s also a great range of art galleries stocked with wonderful pieces to browse.
Take a walk around the popular weekly market on a Tuesday and chose from the luscious selection of fresh local produce or pick up some characterful handmade pieces.
In the centre of the square is Pocklington Arts Centre, an award winning multi-arts venue and a thriving arts and cultural hub for the community. Attracting people from near and far, it has a great line up of the latest blockbuster films, comedians, musicians, exhibitions and workshops, as well as live streamings of world premiere events!
Within a few minutes’ walk of the Square – lies everything you need from a newly refurbished doctors’ surgery, Sainsbury’s, Aldi and Coop, a post office, a library, sports clubs and a leisure centre and churches.

The National Railway Museum is a museum in York forming part of the Science Museum Group. The museum tells the story of rail transport in Britain and its impact on society. It is the home of the national collection of historically significant railway vehicles such as Mallard, Stirling Single, Duchess of Hamilton and a Japanese bullet train. In addition, the National Railway Museum holds a diverse collection of other objects from a household recipe book used in George Stephenson's house to film showing a "never-stop railway" developed for the British Empire Exhibition. It has won many awards, including the European Museum of the Year Award in 2001. As of 2019 the museum is about to embark on a major site development. As part of the York Central redevelopment which will divert Leeman Road, the National Railway Museum will be building a new entrance building to connect the two separate parts of the museum together. At the same time, the space around the museum will be landscaped to provide public spaces.
