Sightseeing

The tower of London is where the crown jewels are kept but there is much more to see there. We have spent hours there and still not seen everything - suits of armour, and great details on the history of the prisoners (including ancestors of mine!). It gets super busy but we went in the late afternoon around 3pm and missed the worst of the crowds

HMS Belfast is a decommissioned World War 2 Royal Navy battleship which is now permanently moored on the River Thames, a 10 minute walk away from our flat. We have returned several times as the kids love exploring all the decks. Military buffs will also appreciate the detailed information boards all over the ship about the actions Belfast was involved in. Be warned that there are loads of narrow ladders and low ceilings so access is difficult. Also queues build up quickly in summer so its best to go early or late to avoid them

Neighbourhoods

Bermondsey street has so many great cafes, bars and restaurants that its hard to choose favourites. Its so convenient to the flat that we don’t need to go any further to find great food and drinks. Favourite places are Jose (both the tapas bar on the corner of Morocco Street as well as the Pizarro spanish restaurant toward Abbey Street) and Casse-Croute french food. Caphe House does great Thai food, either eat in or take away, the same for the Franco Manco pizza place next door. We also love the dumplings in Kin & Deum around the corner on Crucifix Lane. Comptoir gourmand has the best pastries and coffee for the morning breakfast (opens at 7:30am). The Giddy Grocer shop has fresh fruit, veg and bread. The Watchhouse has the best sausage rolls. Tower bridge road has lots of mini-supermarkets where you can buy your groceries. Tesco metro, sainsburys and coop shops all within 5 min walk. To be honest, we tend to eat out when staying in the flat because its so much easier! But its always handy to have pizzas you can pop in the oven after a long day sightseeing and a bottle of wine and some beers in the fridge to relax!

The Maltby Street Market on Ropewalk has lively street stalls that open at the weekends (10 or 11am). You can buy food from the stalls, everything from Ethiopian to Korean street food and either grab a seat in the market (can get really busy around noon) or take away and eat it in the flat. http://www.maltby.st/
