Magical Sirmione -History

Inside the archaeological park, within a vast oliveto-grove, are the remains of a large Roman villa, known for centuries as “Grotte di Catullo”. The building, built between the end of the 1st century b.C. and the beginning of the 1st century A.D. in an excellent panoramic position, at the extreme tip of Sirmione peninsula, is the most important example of a high-class residence in the whole of northern Italy.

With a pleasant walk you will reach the Sirmone Castle which is a few hundred meters away. You will find yourself in the ancient village of Sirmione and in Piazza Castello you can visit The Scaligero Castle of Sirmione. An extraordinary example of lake fortification and one of the most spectacular and best preserved Scaliger fortresses of Garda. Built after the mid-fourteenth century, it takes its name from the Della Scala family who ruled over Verona and its territory between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. A dock belongs to the castle which still today encloses a small portion of the lake.

Built in the mid-1300s, initially the church dedicated to Sant’Anna della Rocca was at the service of the small community that developed around the Castle and was called Santa Maria del Ponte. In the fifteenth century it was decorated with a cross vault, then embellished with votive frescoes in the 1500s and in the seventeenth century the front room covered with a barrel vault was added. It houses a precious effigy of the Madonna and Child, painted on stone and with the Scaligeri coat of arms.
