City/town information

Twain Harte is the nearest town with larger scale services. You can hit up the grocery store, drug/liquor store, several restaurants, and even golf (mini and full size!). Some of our favorites: Local Press - for coffee, breakfast or lunch The Rock - for pub grub Eproson House - for celebrations (and sometimes live music) Pizza Factory - for pies and Italian

More of an intersection than a town, Strawberry features the quirkiest little market you might ever encounter (Strawberry Store - part convenience store, part thrift shop?), and The Strawberry Inn - a great spot to grab a drink and a bite overlooking the Stanislaus River.

Sonora is our nearest town. If you need something that you can't find at a smaller shop closer to the cabin, or just need a dose of civilization, Sonora is a quick 35 minute trip back down the mountain. It has a very cute "old style" downtown with loads of shops, breweries, bars, and restaurants. Boasting amenities such as: places that stay open later than 8pm (some are even 24 hours!), a plethora of restaurants of varying cuisines and drive through options, movie theaters, big box stores, traffic lights, the works!

Outdoor Adventure

A gorgeous alpine lake only 10 minutes from The Chalet Getaway. Swim, fish, boat, SUP, kayak, hike, dine, or even watch a movie under the stars. No trip to the cabin during warmer weather is complete without a day at the lake. On summer weekends, it's a great idea to send someone over early to claim a spot for your group, and then to carpool back since both water frontage and parking can be difficult to come by during peak season. Our favorite approach is to head down early, leave some chairs on the shore, do the 4 mile hike around the lake and then go for a swim. The rest of the day can be spent grilling and chilling, or you can go with just your wallet - the market is incredibly well stocked, there is a small sporting goods store, a coffee kiosk, a restaurant, a snack bar, and even an art gallery! There are many first come first served grill areas, along with larger group spots that can be reserved through www.recreation.gov.

In winter weather it's super convenient to be 15 minutes from the slopes. With 8 lifts and 67 runs on 862 skiable acres plus three terrain parks, this "off the beaten path" resort provides all you need for a great day on the slopes at much more affordable prices than the Tahoe resorts. Lessons and rentals are available. Cafeteria style dining and a bistro for apres ski cocktails are available at the main lodge, with a mid-mountain cafe if you want to avoid the fray.

If skiing and boarding don't hold your interest but you still want to slide down some hills, Leland is for you! 12 acres of snowplay with lifts await, and since Leland is before the Sonora Pass cut off, you don't need to worry about closures cramping your style. There is a grill and a snack bar available, or you can bring your own food.

Food scene

A great spot for breakfast! A breakfast burrito (customized to your liking) and an iced coffee are excellent choices if you don't feel like cooking at home. A fireplace inside the tiny dining room keeps things cozy in the winter, and outdoor seating makes warmer weather alfresco dining a great option. Alicia's is about 20 minutes back down the mountain from the cabin.

The nearest restaurant to The Chalet - it's close enough that you can call in for takeout. Dining in is a solid choice too - especially if you can get a seat on the outdoor patio around sunset. Patrick goes for the Barbecue Chicken Pizza, Alex likes the scallops, and Jen loves the Pear Manchego salad (and a stolen piece of Patrick's pizza).

The Strawberry Inn is a great place to scratch most everyone's culinary itch. Standard pub grub, pizza, and even a few Bavarian classics. The two story deck out back overlooking the river is an excellent spot for a cold one after a long day hiking.

Sightseeing

Sunset views can be hard to come by when you're surrounded by trees, but we know just the place! Pack a picnic and head back down the hill about 20". There is a grassy area just beyond the parking lot with corn hole, and views for DAYS. The sunsets up here are really amazing - don't miss out!

While Yosemite is about a two and a half hour drive from The Chalet Getaway, it's certainly doable as a day trip. I don't think we need to tell you that it's absolutely worth it.

Relax - you're in the mountains. . . but plan ahead!

Mountain Time is a very real phenomenon. Have a plan for dinner early, as the latest you'll find anything open is 8pm. Be prepared for businesses to be closed even when you expect they might be open; for some places to be cash only; and for your cell phone to fail you more often than not. Our best advice is to shop in Sonora or Twain Harte before you come up the hill, especially if you're arriving in the evening. Sonora has some 24 hour services (Walmart, fast food, etc.) but it stinks to have to drive all the way back down there.

Be prepared for cell service and internet connectivity to be limited. Verizon customers seem to have the best luck. We recommend screenshotting or printing out the turn by turn directions to the cabin as a back up, and connecting to our internet and using Wi-Fi calling for calls. If all else fails, think back to the family vacations of your youth and be prepared for conversations and card games.

Hikes Galore

There are countless hikes in this gorgeous alpine area. We have a couple of books in the bookcase to help guide you, and we also count on www.alltrails.com. Some nearby hikes to consider: The hike around Pinecrest Lake, with or without the add on trek out to Cleo's bath; Sugar Pine Railway Trail; Lyon's Dam Trail; and God's Bath. Please remember that we're at altitude here, and altitude sickness can affect some people more than others. Stay hydrated, and cut yourself some slack if you're a little slower than normal.
