Food scene

Some of the best Thai food I've ever had, their fare is a favorite with my long running supper club.

One of the best Mediterranean restaurants around. Highly regarded by locals. Open later than most (10 pm) and only about 4 blocks away from my Airbnb

Great Chinese food without too much oil. Because they are not in a commercial area, there is rarely a line despite being very popular in the neighborhood. Very clean inside and nicely decorated, too. http://www.alicesrestaurantsf.com/Welcome.html

A long time favorite for breakfast an lunch, the outdoor seating takes advantage of Noe Valley's frequent sunshine. Just 2 blocks from your Airbnb, it has great breakfasts and lunches and often a line as it is a constant local favorite. Find it at the corner of 26th and Church and check out their website at https://www.chloessf.com/

I have gotten many positive reviews for Papalote from my guests seeking excellent Mexican food. And it's only a 10 or 12 minute walk. Plenty of Vegetarian options, too!

While I have not yet tried this place, I've been meaning to as several of my guests have all loved it. It's a 17 minute walk from the house but walking down Valencia St. is always an experience with all the eclectic stores, restaurants, murals and people! If you happen to make it to the water front (The Embarcadero) downtown, you can also stop in to their location at the historic Ferry Building, where you'll also find many other great restaurants and, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, you'll find a big farmers market as a bonus! Also, If you go to to the Ferry Building/ Embarcadero, from my home, you can walk 13 minutes to the Mission/24th BART station and be whisked by train to the Embarcadero station in only about 12 more minutes.

The Ferry Building, is by itself, a great outing with its great food scene. It's along the wonderful San Francisco waterfront (Embarcadero), with views all around the bay and so much activity, especially on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday when the Farmer's Market is going (which is all year round). Just a 13 minute walk to Mission/24th Street BART station from my home and your train will get you to the Ferry Building in 12 more minutes (Assume 30 minutes total in case you have to wait a few minutes for the train.) At the Ferry Building, make sure you stop in for a bite at Señor Sisig It's a Filipino inspired fusion of Latin and Asian flavors. One other thing, if you have the time, you can also take another route to the Ferry Building - walk North on Dolores St. from my house, passing Dolores Park and make a left on 18th over to Castro Street. Take a right there and amble through the heart of the Castro District to 17th and Market Street where you can get on the F-line trolley car - all the cars on the F-Line are antique cars from all over the world from the 30's through the '50s. You can take the F-Line all the way down Market Street to the Ferry Building/Embarcadero or continue past there to get off at Fisherman's Wharf!

Nice big place with lots of craft beers made on site. The rotating food trucks keep it interesting, too. Great place to visit after getting your exercise hiking the summit of Bernal Heights Park and taking in the stunning views. It's about a 25 minute walk from my home.

If you are looking for some great Mexican food, all my neighbors say La Taqueria makes the best tacos and burritos ever. Get El Dorado style. It's just a 12 minute walk from my house and also, just a block off the BART station at 24th and Mission in case you're hungry after a long day of playing wherever BART might have taken you!

Very nice selection of Mediterranean wraps that are consistently good and healthy and include vegan and Vegetarian entries. Many of my guests have had great reviews for this place.

Coffee Houses

Plenty of plugs for laptops, good coffee, nice and open and clean, not to mention good coffee. Stop here on your way back from hiking the Harry Street Stairs! It's just a 10 minute walk through a quiet neighborhood. Hours are 7:30 am to 3 pm 1588 Sanchez St. at 29th. I'm hoping their business grows to allow for later hours!

Nice little coffee house/café just three blocks away at Sanchez and 26th streets. It has lots of outdoor seating right on one of our "Slow Streets" so there's very minimal traffic. It attracts lots of neighbors who congregate there most days!

Sightseeing

Great climb, great views if you like to walk the city. At the top of the steps (240 of them) take a right onto Beacon and in a 50 yards, you'll get a great view all the way to downtown and the bay from the top of Billy Goat Hill Park. You can reach the stairs at the very end of Noe Street (the last block of which is a one way narrow street before it terminates at Harry and Laidley (see picture)

I walk this great rugged park frequently - you can get to it by a nice walk through the Glen Park neighborhood by way of Chenery Street. Interestingly enough, it was once the location of the first Dynamite manufacturing plant in the U.S. the "Giant Powder Company" of San Francisco, California, whose founder had obtained the exclusive rights from Nobel in 1867.

I do a lot of urban hikes, and Bernal Heights is one I frequent because it is close and because it is accessible through a neighborhood of very eclectic and interesting homes via many urban staircases. It is also close to the Bernal Heights neighborhood commercial center so you can enjoy dining somewhere on Cortland Avenue after your venture! It is also a nice invigorating walk with the best views of many parts of the city.
