Wolfe’s Neck Farm. (Not to be confused with Wolfe’s Neck State Park) Turn right as you leave the driveway. At the stop sign, turn right. Continue down 4 or 5 minutes until you see Wolfe's Neck Road on the right. Turn onto Wolfe’s Neck Road, and you will see a sign for Wolfe’s Neck Farm and Agricultural Center on the left. It’s a dirt road… take it. (If you kept going straight, you would find Wolfe’s Neck State Park). We love to park down by the little bridge and walk the rest of the way, but you can drive over the bridge, and turn right at the next little dirt road. There is a grassy field there on the right (right away) where you’ll see some small signs that visitors can park there on the grass. Another option is to drive over the little bridge, and just stay straight up until you get to the farm. Wolfe’s Neck has a lot of great walking trails, and an area where you can rent canoes.

Winslow Park is a campground, but it’s way more than that. Most visitors pass right by it due to its campground sign, but you will be missing out if you don’t go. There is a small entrance fee. When you pull in, directly across from the small beach you can pick up one of our favorite trails. It swirls you around by the water, and ends at a little point of land that will give you one of Freeport’s most beautiful views. When the trail ends, just head up and walk across the grass to the point at the end by the water. There is a big dock as well, and access down to the rocky beach below. If you don’t want to talk a big walk, still head to Winslow! Grab a picnic lunch or dinner before you go! When you drive in to Winslow, turn right after the beach. That whole area, all along the waterfront, is for day use visitors. Pull up your car by any picnic table, and have an amazing waterfront meal. :) Take a walk along the water’s edge, and you’ll find lots of stair-access points down to the water.

Pettengill Farm triggers all of the fuzzy, warm, feelies for old New England. It’s a favorite local spot that the town takes a lot of pride in. You’ll feel like you’ve travelled back in time. It’s an early 1800’s house & salt-water farm on the estuary of the Harraseeket River, and includes 140 acres of fields, woods, antique apple orchards, and salt marsh. It’s free to visit. If you’re going to go, just be aware that there isn’t a lot of parking available. You park on the street at the end of the old farm driveway. Walking down the old dirt road is about a 5-10 minute walk, depending on if you’re strolling or working off a cinnamon roll. Suddenly, the road opens up to the old field, stone walls, ancient apple trees, and the beautiful antique farmhouse. It’s a stunning location that is really just forever trapped in the 1800’s.

Pineland Farm Garden is a great spot if you enjoy flowers, photography, meandering, or joy. ;) www.pinelandfarms.org Pineland is about a 15 minute drive from here, in New Gloucester. It’s a massive complex with 5000 acres of land. Their garden is a small masterpiece. There are over 6000 flowering annuals, swirling walking paths, and a small orchard. It’s free, and open every day from 8 AM until dusk. Bringing a blanket to sit under the apple trees and do some sketching is a favorite activity. To get there, take Pownall Road out of Freeport (it becomes Elmwood Road at some point). Take it to the end, and at the stop sign, turn Left. The garden is a few minutes down the road on your right, just before a 4 way stop sign. You’ll see the big white fence, and a little parking area. After your time in the garden, go straight through that 4 way stop, and then turn right to get into the Pineland Visitor Center & Farm Stand

Cape Elizabeth, Portland Headlight & Fort William Park. You have come this far… and you just can’t leave without seeing Portland Headlight! Trust me. The lighthouse/Fort William is about 15 minutes outside of Portland, in Cape Elizabeth. When you go, walk all around the lighthouse, but then take the stone path off to the left of the light house. It’s a cliffwalk, and gives you the most incredible views of the lighthouse & the rocky coastline. Take it all the way to the end (it’s not too long) and you’ll see some pretty gardens, and a cool rocky beach. Go past the rocky beach, and you’ll find the remains of an old mansion, and an old fort. If you’re brave, head into one of the fort’s dark passage ways. Climb to the top for wonderful views of the waterfront & downtown Portland. Sidenote: while you’re in Cape Elizabeth, Two Lights State Park is worth a stop. Amazing views, wonderful trails, tidepools, etc. It will take your breath away when you see it. Just be careful near the water’s edge… the waves can come out of nowhere. One more street down from Two Lights State Park is “Kettle Cove Road”. Take it, and drive to the end of the road. Free parking, and two really stunning beaches. Walk over to the bigger beach (Crescent Beach), and walk down to the end (it’s a mile long beach). At the end, there is a path that takes you through a small field, and to another little beach that the locals call red-sands.

Bailey Island. Just go. Don’t fight it. About 35-40 minutes away. A grouping of islands, all connected by bridges, and called Harpswell. Bailey Island is one of them. Go there. For scenic views, to feel like you’ve fallen into Maine heaven, to take beautiful walks, and to check out our favorite gift shop. Places we love there: The Giant’s Staircase (easy, STUNNING walk along the rocky coastline), Cooks Lobster and Ale House (sometimes we just go there for an order of fries & to find treasures on their beach), and the Land’s End Gift Shop. I don’t know what it is about the Land’s End Gift Shop (maybe it’s the incredible views, their little beach, the moving lost-at-sea lobsterman statue, their homemade fudge, or all of the Maine things that I never knew I needed so badly in my life!) but we make trips out there more than I would like to admit. I haven’t done all of the hiking trails out on Bailey Island, but I am told that they are all great.

Maine Botanical Gardens. Heading to Boothbay for a day is SO worth it. Not only is downtown Boothbay fun to wander around in, but the Maine Botanical Gardens are just stunning. It will take you a little less than an hour to get to. www.mainegardens.org Along the way, a stop at Fort Edgecomb is worth a quick stop if you are a history buff (it will be about a 15 minute stop. Nice time to stretch your legs). Get your tickets for the Botanical Garden before you go! There is a bridge in Wiscasset Maine that you will have to cross, and the bridge can get backed up with traffic during the summer months. So, if you get there, and traffic is crawling, just know that it will once again speed up after the town. That said, leaving early in the day is a good idea to avoid that. … and our advice is to skip Reds, a very famous lobster roll place in Wiscasset. The lobster rolls are $30+ a piece (really), and NOT worth it. On a rainy day, if there’s no one in line, they do have Fried Dough that's incredible… a super unhealthy, fantastic treat that I rarely see outside of a New England state fair. - get it with tomato sauce!

Black Point Inn, Scarborough Maine & Cliff Walk. In order to access their cliff walk, you must be a guest, or dining, at the Inn. We go for a late breakfast… and often I don’t want to leave. Outside seating, overlooking the ocean, beautiful gardens, big roaring fireplace, enclosed porch loaded with white wicker. It’s a dream. After you eat, and lounge for a while, ask them how to get to the cliff walk…. And don’t skip it if you’re feeling full and sleepy after your Bloody Mary! It’s a fantastic walk. It takes you past Winslow Homer’s painting studio. As you walk, you can almost see his paintings coming to life in front of you. www.blackpointinn.com

Shopping

LLBean is a must-stop (and it’s open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year). What some people don’t realize is that, in addition to the big LLBean campus stores, there is also an LLBean outlet store in town. It’s across the street from the LLBean campus, in Freeport Village Station. They do close at 9 though.

Great Night Out!

Blue, Portland Maine. If you are in Portland on a Wednesday night, Irish music night at Blue is fantastic. Blue is a tiny little local music venue that we love. They serve food & alcohol. When the music starts, the talking stops… so be aware that the locals won’t be pleased if you chat through the music. Get there about 30 minutes before the music starts to get a table, order food, and chat. It’s a total mixed group of ages. Expect to see people from ages 15-90! They have other great music nights as well, but the Wednesday night Irish music should not be missed. - and it just happens to be a block away from the Green Elephant, which is our favorite Thai & Asian inspired vegan restaurant in Portland (LOTS of GF options here too).

Food scene

End your day in Cape Elizabeth with a drink (or dinner!) at Inn by the Sea. We have had many wonderful evenings here! The lounge has a perfect fireplace, and such comfortable seating. Outside there are firepits and chairs overlooking the ocean. There is a restaurant called the Sea Glass restaurant there at the Inn, where we often head for our anniversary. LOTS of vegan options, local produce, and ocean view from every window. Take the boardwalk from behind the Inn right down to Crescent Beach for a walk on the beach before heading home.

Neighborhoods

Portland: So much to see and do here, but here are the places we love. Victoria Mansion Portland Art Museum Eastern Promenade (incredible views, open grassy areas, food trucks, small beach) If you’re a train buff, the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad is fun! Exchange Street! Full of galleries, restaurants, shops. Everywhere is great to eat… places in Portland don’t stay in business if they aren’t fantastic. Saturday morning Farmers Market at Deering Oaks Park Allagash Beer Tour (be on the lookout for a floor mosaic I created for them) A magical 3 blocks where there are local breweries, a distillery, winery, two kombucha bars, and a mead bar… and more. Park at the Urban Farm Fermentory & Gruit Brewing Co, at 200 Anderson Street, in Portland…. and walk around the neighborhood to find all of the cool drink makers! Anyone at the Urban Farm and Fermentory will point you to all of the other places in the area.
