Visitor Centre

Brockhole is a visitor’s centre on the eastern shore of Windermere Lake, there are lots of different activities that can be booked including, SUP, kayaking, archery and tree top nets. You can also get a boat from Brockhole to Bowness or Ambleside and do a bit more exploring. If you go to Ambleside make sure you go to Ambleside Fish & Chips at Waterhead, they do the best chips in the area (this might be a plug, as it is our families Fish & Chip shop, but they are really good chips!). windermere-lakecruises.co.uk brockhole.co.uk

City/town information

A small town at the northern tip of Windermere Lake, there are lots of shops and restaurants to explore. We never miss a trip to The Apple Pie, normally stocking up on Bath Buns and Lakeland Gingerbread (sorry Grasmere Gingerbread, yours is good but we think theirs is better!). A circular walk to Loughrigg Fell is a popular choice from Ambleside the main loop is about 6 miles, steep in some places but with great views and takes you past Rydal Caves. If you fancy messing about on the water, kayaks, SUP and row boat hire is available at Waterhead, about a mile away from the main town centre. applepieambleside.co.uk windermerecanoekayak.com

A pretty village just north of Ambleside, you can visit Dove Cottage the home of William Wordsworth and pick up some Grasmere Gingerbread. The village itself has some lovely shops and cafes for a few hours of pottering. Lucias Coffee & Bakehouse is our favourite stop for a pasty or sausage roll, or for a special occasion we love the Jumble Room Restaurant. There are some gentle walks in the area too that are suitable for all different abilities. Some popular options are the circular walk around Grasmere Lake which is about 3 miles in total or a slightly longer and more challenging walk up to Easdale Tarn. wordsworth.org.uk thejumbleroom.co.uk

Keswick is a popular market town in the north of the Lakes. There are a number of indoor attractions including the Derwent Pencil Museum, Puzzling Place and Climbing Centre. A day out that we often take visiting friends on is a walk up Catbells. Starting with a boat trip from Keswick across Derwent Water to Hawes End and finishing with lunch at Lingholm, it’s always a fun day out. It is worth an early start to get the first boat of the day and while the walk is a bit of a scramble in places it rewards you with fantastic views. keswick-launch.co.uk thelingholmestate.co.uk

Artisan gelato made in the Lakes. There is always a crowd on a sunny day, the flavours are ever changing and did you know gelato has less fat than normal ice-cream.

One of our favourite places to grab a coffee. There is always a good selection of cakes and make sure you get a bag of coffee beans to take home too.

Perfect for a morning croissant (the almond one is a winner) or to pick up a loaf of sourdough bread, they also make really good sandwiches and salads. An offshoot of the More? Bakery is More? Dough, serving sourdough pizzas that are available for takeaway at the weekend.

Great traditional fish & chip shop. There is always a queue on a Friday night, what more can we say.

We have been wanting to eat here for ages after hearing some great things from friends and family. For a very special birthday we have just recently been and were blown away by the tasting menu based around local produce. After winning a Michelin star and TripAdvisors best restaurant in the world 2021 reservations have to be made well in advance but if you really want to spoil yourself or loved one this is the place to do it.

If you find yourself in Keswick the Fellpack is a great shout for lunch or dinner. Their 'Fellpots' are their signature bowls made up of classic dishes with a twist.

This might seem like a strange recommendation but if you love Lakeland (you know, the kitchen shop!) and its a rainy day a visit to their flagship store in Windermere and cafe is a great way to spend a few hours.

Fellfoot Cottage is located at the mouth of the Kentmere Valley, with the village of Kentmere located a few miles away, further into the valley. With some of the most stunning scenery you will find, the valley is gentle to the south of Kentmere village with rolling hills while to the north it deepens into a classic U-shaped Lakeland valley with steep rugged slopes. The high summits of a bowl of fells known as the Kentmere Horseshoe, which surround the Kentmere Reservoir is a stunning place to visit. The valley is perfect for walking and cycling and while it remains quieter than some other Lake District valleys it is regarded as a bit of a hidden gem.
