Kendal is a nice old market town with beautiful cobbled streets, lots of yards or alleyways to explore and gorgeous little pubs. It's one of the largest shopping towns in the Lake District.
Kendal is often seen as the Southern gateway to the Lake District, being only around 9 miles from Windermere and around 30 miles from Keswick. The other lakes are all within an hour or two's travelling by car from the town, as are locations for walks and rambles, both gentle and demanding.

It's worth taking one of the many pathways up to Kendal Castle which overlooks the town and surrounding area with lovely views from the top.

Kendal seems to have its own micro climate so be ready for any weather! Raincoat with hood, comfortable shoes or boots for walking and layers of clothing to take off if warm and put on to keep you cosy.
