Neighbourhoods

Chapel Stile is a village in Cumbria located around 5 miles NW of Ambleside. It sits within the famous Langdale Valley. There is a village school, a church - Holy Trinity, a Co-op store (like no other!) and an Inn - Wainwrights. The village is built from blue-grey slate, raised from the slate quarries that surround it. The church backs on to the slopes of Silver How. You can climb this fell and be in Grasmere before you know it! If you travel West away from Chapel Stile you will find yourself deeper in the Langdale valley. The Langdale Pikes loom overhead..... "No mountain profile in Lakeland arrests and excites the attention more than the Langdale Pikes" - Alfred Wainwright. Two miles to the west of Chapel Stile is the New Dungeon Ghyll, with a tearoom and hotel bar, the 'Walkers bar'. Another mile on is the hotel at Old Dungeon Ghyll, it feels very remote now...paths head into the Scafell massif from here, some of Englands highest mountains.

Grasmere is a touristy village - yes.. but understandably so! It is home to the beautiful Grasmere Lake. Take a rowing boat out from 'Faeryland Grasmere' for an explore.... William Wordsworth moved into Dove Cottage here in 1799. It is where he produced most of his best-loved poems. And let's not forget his sister Dorothy! she kept her fascinating Grasmere journal whilst living at Dove Cottage with William. Sarah Nelson's Grasmere Gingerbread at The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop. You have to try some! The National Trust property 'Allan Bank'. William Wordsworth once lived here with his three children from 1808. It isn't at all stuffy and the children can paint, play... you can sit anywhere with a cup of tea, read and enjoy the views. Explore the gardens and surrounding area too. The Heaton Cooper Studio in the village of Gramsmere is a family run gallery, art shop and cafe 'Mathildes'. It is fascinating to look at the work of this talented family. Wonderful Lake District landscapes.... Mathildes is a well designed cafe with an interesting menu and an outdoor sitting area. While in the village stop off at Sam Read Bookseller, situated just off the village green. It first opened in 1887! EM Forster used to send his letters home via this bookshop. It is an intimate independent bookshop and the owner will be happy to recommend something to suit your literary tastes. Baldry's is a good cafe in Red Lion Square, for lunch or afternoon tea.

just lovely for children, lots to explore! It is not an historic castle full of historic things... but was donated to the Trust devoid of contents in a bare state! There NT has filled several rooms with activities for children of all ages. You can wander round freely. There's a cafe and an adventure playground in the woods. You can also walk down to the shore of Lake Windermere.

I've spent many a rainy half day here with the children. Good climbing walls for them and a great soft play exploring area with cafe attached. In the heart of Keswick in the North Lakes.

A wet weather fun place to visit. Our kids loved it! Load of fun illusions and brain teasers. You will forget the rain outside and have a bit of a giggle for a couple of hours here. Good shop with little gifts for the children too.

It's a bit off the beaten track this... but worth a visit. I've looked round the house with the children and oh they love the gardens and adventure playground! There are walks to the lake shore through the ground and a great little cafe in the carpark 'The Old Sawmill Tearoom' Really lovely memories of time spent at this place.

The Honister Slate mine is located at the head of Honister Pass in the centre of the Lake District. it offers a range of indoor and outdoor adventures for a range of ages and abilities. It is also the last working slate mine in England !There is a fully-guided underground tour where you can experience first hand what life was like for the miners of old. And if you are very brave check out the Via Ferrata classic... or Xtreme!!! Or perhaps the infinity bridge? After all this excitment visit the Sky Hi Cafe (the highest cafe in the Lake District) for homemade cakes, soups and snacks.

At the Brockhole visitor centre in Winderemere you will find Treetop trek and Treetop Nets. My young children have loved visits to the Treetop Nets - giant bouncy nets suspended up to 15m above the ground with super slides and tunnels to explore ! for age 3 upwards....

What a stunning boat.... a rebuilt Victorian steam powered yacht on Coniston Water. She was built in 1859 by the Furness Railway Company as an attraction for the tourists they brought by train to Coniston. It is said that this Gondola gave Arthur Ransome the idea for Captain Flint's houseboat in his book 'Swallows and Amazons'. You can request to stop at 'Brantwood', the home of John Ruskin from 1871-1900. The last stop is at Monk Coniston, the Northern tip of the Lake. Here you can disembark for a 3 hour loop walk to Tarn Hows and back perhaps?

A very unique organic restaurant situated on a back street in Grasmere. The small stone building housing it actually dates back to the 18th century and was Grasmere's first shop! It's a friendly, family run affair with an eclectic mix of international and traditional British food. Lively atmosphere.

A really good vegetarian cafe with a spectacular selection of cakes to tempt! This is the perfect stop off half way through one of the circular walks starting directly from Silver Howe and The Piggery in Chapel Stile. Situated at Skelwith Bridge here is a huge outdoor terrace next to the river and even a very chic shop next door with an impressive selection of homeware, cards, children's toys etc.

This has been the heart of Elterwater Village for years. its just down the road from Silver Howe and The Piggery and an alternative to Wainwrights if you wish to walk. I remember going there when I was a child and nothing has changed much! It is a must visit for walkers, cyclist and sightseers. The pub stocks lots of cask ales and beers and the food is basic and generous, with of course the obligatory sticky toffee pud for afters!

This used to be a cafe but in 2020 became a neighbourhood bistro. It’s under the same team as The Old Stamp House restaurant nearby. Kysty offers a simplified versions of the Old stamp House’s a la carte menu. It’s wonderful!!! For those not familiar with Cumbrian dialect , Kysty ( rhymes with feisty not Misty) means ‘overly discerning about ones food, or fussy’ Go!

Take a walk from a carpark in Grasmere up to Easedale Tarn. It is an easy to follow path. If a hot day why not take a dip when you're there? On the way back have a drink in the garden of The Lancrigg Hotel. There is nice play area for the children. It's a very remote and romantic spot too.

Silver How is the big fell directly behind The Piggery and Silver Howe. Wonderful views from the top......If you're feeling fit and energetic walk up and over the back, coming down past Allan Bank into Grasmere village. When we've been too tired with the children to walk back we've caught a bus into Ambleside and then back to Chapel Stile but this isn't a cheap option - be warned! You can walk back via the edge of the Lake and then up past the Langdale Youth Hostel at High Close and back round to your starting point.

This fell is in the centre of the Lakes standing on the end of the long ridge coming down from High Raise over Silver How towards Ambleside. It is an easy Wainwright Fell to bag on your holiday at 335m high. There are many different circular walks including this fell and I really recommend them. It was the first fell my children climbed. They felt a real sense of achievement at the top. The views are breathtaking.... you can see Windermere , Grasmere and Rydal in all their glory. It can be approached from all directions.

Walking up to Latterbarrow from Hawkshead is a lovely little walk. Great views from the tall beacon on the top. Have a wander round Hawkshead too well known for its associations with Beatrix potter. Oh and William Wordsworth once went to the village school !
