Walking

Walking - at Glentrool Glentrool is nestled deep in the Galloway Forest Park. Choose trails through the woods or along the glen to Loch Trool. There are circular routes for all abilities; 1.25, 2.25, 4.5 or 5.75 miles, or if you are feeling very active try hiking up The Merrick (843 m/2765 ft), the highest hill in Southern Scotland. A popular ascent from Glen Trool (park at Bruce’s Stone), it’s a wonderful day out on varied and interesting terrain with lovely views for almost the entire way. It is a long/hard walk but well worth the effort!

Star Gazing

Star Gazing A Dark Sky Park is a place with exceptionally dark night skies, a place where people have committed to keeping those skies dark, by controlling light pollution. Since 2009, Galloway Forest Park has been designated by the International Dark-Sky Association as only the fourth Dark Sky Park in the world, and the first in the UK, named a Gold Tier park for its breathtaking and rare stargazing conditions. On a clear night sit outside the Shepherd’s Hut and enjoy the night sky.

Nature

Nature – a trip to Wood of Cree The Wood of Cree is the largest ancient wood in southern Scotland and is managed by the RSPB. The Wood of Cree has an amazing range of habitats. The oak woodland is the main feature of the reserve - known as Atlantic oak woodland, or Scotland's rainforest, this habitat is home to many birds, mammals (especially bats), invertebrates and wildflowers. Other important habitats on the reserve are the areas of wood pasture, open moorland, wet floodplain woodland, fen and grassland and scrub, each with their own particular wildlife associated with them.
