Food scene

If you like oysters, you must visit! You can select your own oysters from a tank, shuck them (or get a lesson!) and eat them right there at the picnic tables. They also have other picnic food (fresh bread, cheese) and drinks. I love this setting and the whole experience (lunch).

This is the go-to foodie option on the island, serving “sophisticated Northwest cuisine” in a beautiful wooded setting. In the summer, sit outside in the garden. It's magical!

We love the outdoor seating area with picnic tables. It’s lovely to sit outside in the sun and enjoy a big, warm pretzel and an IPA. They also have pizza and a simple menu.

I love this spot for a special night out. They have wonderful food, excellent cocktails and a raw bar. The restaurant has a great view and good vibe, perched above the ferry terminal and the harbor. Also good for happy hour.

I recently had some of the best salmon of my life from this place (and I've been lucky to have a LOT of amazing salmon). It's a 5 min walk from town to get here...this seafood store is tucked away out on the dock of Friday Harbor Marina (open seasonally). To get there, walk down the main ramp and the fish market is at the bottom of the ramp (where the dock flattens out on the water).

Sightseeing

This place is right up the road and is absolutely lovely for strolling through the fields and taking pictures. There’s also a little gift shop (open seasonally at the farm, open year round downtown). I recommend getting some of their lavender shortbread cookies, some of their homemade ice cream and sitting at a picnic table and making your own ice cream sandwiches while looking out at the lavender fields. It’s the best!

The history of American Camp (and British Camp) is fascinating. Read about it ahead of time and then ask one of the rangers for details (they will sometimes give impromptu talks). There is a visitor's center and great trails (of varying lengths) that take off from there. Some of my favorite views on the island are here and there are many sandy beaches on both sides of the road to explore. Take a picnic and make it a day! Or ride your bike from the house to the lighthouse!

English Camp and American Camp offer two very different experiences on two different parts of the island. It’s fun to visit both to learn about the fascinating history. English Camp also has a few nice wooded hiking trails, one of which goes up Young Hill (where this photo was taken) and offers great views.

Downtown Friday Harbor is one of my favorite little towns anywhere in the world. It's always bustling and full of good energy. There are lots of great shops to explore (Deer Hazel is one of my favorites), there's a Whale Museum (great for kids) and many restaurants where you can get take out. Get some ice cream from the shop down on the water (between Downriggers and ferry) and take it out on the docks and watch the boat traffic. This is a great place to spend an afternoon...or a few!

This is one of the best places to see whales (April-Sept) and there are lots of walking trails and great viewpoints. There’s also a small gift shop and interpretive center. During the summer months, there’s a café where you can get lunch.
