City/town information

Gardenstown is one of the most beautiful and picturesque fishing villages on the north coast of Aberdeenshire. It is a working fishing village with over 20 registered fishing vessels laying creels to catch fresh crabs and lobsters as well as mackerel in the season. Gardenstown was created as a fishing village in 1720 by Alexander Garden of Troup, the local landowner, and it was by 1900 the home to salmon and herring fleet of 92 vessels. By the 1920s Gardenstown and Crovie, the neighbouring village, together housed around 250 fishermen and 50 fishing vessels but this number declined over the following years in the face of competition from larger vessels operating out of larger ports such as Macduff and Fraserburgh. On the hillside to the west of the village are the remains of the church of St John the Evangelist. The first church to be built on the site was constructed in 1004 when the local landowner defeated the Danes at a battle on the site of the church. The first stone church was built in 1513 and it remained in use until 1827 when a new church was constructed inland from the village. To the west of the harbour is the fishing community of Seatown with its colourful cottages and winding streets. Seatown is well worth a visit as is the long sandy beach beyond it. The harbour is the centre of the village with the piers finished in 1911. It provides a haven for not only the small registered fishing vessels but also a wide range of leisure craft. The locals are very friendly and always willing to share a fishing story with visitors to the village.
