This lovely 17th century building is the premises of the Crown & Garter pub in nearby Inkpen. Part of the Honesty group, it serves stunning food (take-aways available) in gorgeous surrounding. Its award-winning bread is baked on site and is available in the shop, along with tea, coffee and cakes. It's a strenuous but doable walk from the cottage (around an hour?) or a 10 minute drive. Booking advisable. Tel: 01488 668325 www.crownandgarter.co.uk

A lovely old-fashioned popular pub with great food. Overlooking the river between Kintbury and Newbury, it's possible to walk there (takes just over an hour) or it's a 10 minute drive. The garden at the front slopes down to the river and is a really pretty spot for lunch - especially if the sun's shining. Watch out for regular special offers.

I must admit to a personal bias here. Tray is a great friend who has recently opened her café just outside the town of Hungerford on the A4 (about a 10 minute drive from the cottage). The ethos is honest, organic, the space gorgeous and the whole enterprise is just full of integrity and love. The coffee is top notch, DELICIOUS, and the salads, sandwiches, cakes and other baked goodies are freshly made daily and uses local, seasonal sourced ingredients. Open Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm. Go and check it out. Unit 2, Barrs Yard, Bath Road, Hungerford RG17 0HD. It forms part of the Barrs Yard Artisans collective, so there's also great independent shopping enticingly close!

This arty, yet traditional village pub is run by a young, enthusiastic couple, Ollie (MasterChef semi-finalist) & Lauren: he paints, she sings, the food & drink is spot on and is mainly local & organic. They believe in a farm-to-fork ethos so the menu is bursting with all things local: artisan charcuterie made by Ollie’s dad on his nearby farm, craft lager, organic wines, homemade liqueurs. And they have great live music nights. Pizza and drinks are currently available through the pub’s takeaway service. http://www.thewheatsheafchiltonfoliat.co.uk/

I haven’t tried it yet, but foodie friends whom I trust say that the food is superb, and despite the name, it's not just mushrooms! The rather macabre Gibbet was erected in 1676 for the purpose of gibbeting the bodies of George Broomham and Dorothy Newman and has only ever been used for them. Broomham and Newman were having an affair and were hanged for murdering Broomham's wife Martha, and their son Robert after they discovered them together on the downs. Unfortunately for the lovers, the murder was witnessed by "Mad Thomas", who managed to convey what he had seen to the authorities. The gibbet was placed in such a prominent location as a warning and to deter others. A replica marks the site. Nowadays it is a popular local tourist attraction with good views of the surrounding area - on a clear day you can see five counties. It is also popular with hang gliders and paragliders. Parking is a bit hit and miss although there is more on the Faccombe road which is not too far away. The views are stunning: it's a lovely spot to picnic and there are enough paths to allow for some good walks. Catch it at the right time and you might see Kestrels and some lovely flying displays from Buzzards and Red Kites.

Now part of the Mark Warner Leisure Group, this beautiful mid 1500s' Grade I listed Tudor manor has a truly unique story and is well worth a visit. The stunning location has played host to occupying Romans, a Tudor tryst and even a Civil War army. The grounds contain an ornate Roman mosaic floor and settlement remains. Henry VIII courted Jane Seymour here, and the D-Day landings were planned within the house. England’s last remaining Cromwellian Chapel in a private house is also here, and the property offers many more historical jewels for you to explore at your leisure. Only 15 minutes drive from our cottage, and completely free, you could combine a visit with lunch at the nearby Wheatsheaf in Chilton Foliat.

About 1/2 hour drive from the cottage is the extraordinarily beautiful Laverstock Mill, the distillery of Bombay Sapphire Gin. This place is an absolute gem. Whitchurch Silk Mill (around 35 minutes’ drive away) is the oldest silk mill in the UK still in its original building. A stunning survival of industrial heritage in beautiful, rural Hampshire, weavers at this Georgian water mill weave silk using 19th century machinery and techniques. There are demonstrations throughout the day from extremely knowledgeable guides and the chance to weave some fabric (not as easy as it doesn't look). Interactive exhibits and hands on opportunities makes this an excellent day out. Special mention goes to the BEST MUSEUM SHOP EVER - bar none. I have left before staggering under unique purchases, and feeling rather pleased that I've managed to sort all my Christmas presents out in one go! There's a heavenly cafe on site and tickets are an extraordinarily reasonable £7.00 for adults. In the past, I've just turned up - but ‘in these unusual times’, I would check first. https://whitchurchsilkmill.org.uk/tickets/

About 1/2 hour drive from the cottage, just beyond Marlborough is the World Heritage Unesco site of Avebury. One of the best known prehistoric sites in Britain, it contains the largest megalithic stone circle in the world. Similar and not far from the renowned Stonehenge, I find this site absolutely bewitching, particularly as you can wander in amongst the stones, unlike Stonehenge.
