This is a wonderful little old-school family run coffee shop with lots of great homemade baked goods and some simple sandwiches and soups. Cozy and nice. One of our comfort-food favorites is the cheesy hash brown bake.

A fun little pizza shop that is neither of our favorite pizzas, although it has a pretty good following in Minneapolis. Just two blocks away, though, so it draws us in every few weeks. I imagine they deliver, but Broder's or Galactic is better delivery pizza in our book.

OH MY GOD THE BEST ICE CREAM IN THE WORLD AND IT IS ONLY TWO AND A HALF BLOCKS AWAY. Only one block if you run fast enough. Also has occasional random soups and sandwiches, and usually a cake or two. It is an artisan ice-cream factory first, and and a shop second, so the hours can be random and flexible. Best to call first to make sure it is open, although it is pretty reliable on weekends and during the summer, when you can sit in secret, gorgeous Mediterranean-style piazza along the side.

OK, we love this place for so many reasons. Great breakfasts, lunches, dinners, a really good happy hour. Great bar. Get there before 10 and the best breakfasts are deeply discounted. A theater that puts on some amazing live stuff every night of the week, and every night is different. Bowling! Many people just never go anywhere else, because BLB brings it all to one spot, all in a kitschy 50s atmosphere that is the real thing.

Dave's thing is pies, and the coffee shop seems like an afterthought. The menu is limited but the food is good - egg dishes for breakfast and sandwiches, but there is no espresso machine. The space is bright and airy. They are brand new on the scene, and you get the idea that they are still working out the kinks and Dave is very open to suggestions. We like to see people support them as they get their feet under them, since they have great potential.

Simply our favorite restaurant in Minneapolis, and possibly the world, for so many reasons. Utterly delicious Vietnamese food, run by a wonderful family who arrived as refugees 30 years ago. It is also quite large now, having gone through several metamorphoses stepping up in size from a tiny first storefront. Service is fast, casual, and incredibly proficient -- more like a diner. But the food will slow you right down and make you linger. You may have a short wait on weekends, but they churn the crowds through, so don't be afraid.

Simply the best bakery/patisserie in Minneapolis. A visit to Minneapolis without partaking in a treasure composed by the world-renowned owner/baker would be a travesty. Beyond the enchanting collection of pastries and cakes, they serve a very decent lunch, with a selection of maybe three different sandwiches a day, and a good coffee-shop atmosphere if you want to settle in and work. Many people rave about the burger here, and rightly so. They're shooting for and mostly hitting a diner atmosphere where foodies would be at home. Because of the weird Minneapolitan reluctance to grant too many full liquor licenses, you can only get wine and beer (or wine/beer based cocktails) here. A few tables outdoors.

Let's call this an indoor street market. A huge international market that really works! Dozens of vendors from the Middle East, Mexico, Morocco, India, Somalia, Cambodia, Thailand, and more serve an unbelievable variety of great fast food. If you have a group of picky eaters, some adventurous some not, you can choose pizza or hamburgers or go with Morocco tangine, Lebanese foule, Mexican sopes, Cambodian drunken noodles, etc and all still eat together in the central square. A great place to explore! Small shops run by immigrants ring the periphery and it's not unusual to be treated to live music or dance. Simply amazing. A joyous place, you'll go back again and again.

We love this place, and the only reason we aren't really pushing this place is because it is directly across the street from the even-better Quang's. But sometimes, on Tuesdays when Quang is closed, or when the line is too long, try to go here instead. We love the owner, really want her newish restaurant to take off, and her food is 99% as good as Quang.
