Beaches
Sand and pebble beach for family outings or relaxed walks.
There is 10 miles of open beach right next to the cottage. You can walk north to Six Mile Point, past the Newcastle airstrip on to the estuary near Kilcoole. You can continue your walk all the way to Greystones along the beach. Alternatively, you can walk south to Wicklow town which is a five mile walk. There are lots of lovely coffee shops and restaurants for refreshments in both towns.

There is a restaurant and coffee shop with indoor and garden dining space, and a small food market, as well as some boutique stores surrounding the garden area.

Mount Usher Gardens
Mt. Usher is a botanical garden with a circular walk of about 4km as well as a shorter loop of approximately 2km. It has a lovely tree trail that has trees featured from around the world. There is a restaurant and coffee shop with indoor and garden dining space, and a small food market, as well as some boutique stores surrounding the garden area.
You can access the bird sanctuary from the Five Mile Point car park. The path is beautiful and secluded winding past wetlands, forest to boardwalks to access the bird hides. Look out for pony’s otters, deer and of course the birds. Don’t forget to pack some coffee for when you get to the hide. The exit is through the north main entrance, then walk back along the beach. In the winter the access is through the main entrance on the Sea Road. It is well worth a visit.

Five Mile Point is remote
Most guests prefer to have a car, as the cottage is quite remote. If you want to walk to the nearest shop, the safest way to get to there is to walk 1 mile north to Six Mile Point along the beach, then 1 mile west along the Sea Road. The coast road has no pedestrian path.

Newcastle market on Saturday
Quaint homemade foods and fresh farm veg. At the Newcastle Community Centre on a Saturday morning from 10:30-12:30pm. This is a very small market, so it is best to get there early or all the good stuff is gone.

Bird sanctuary walk
Excellent walk through the bird sanctuary that starts at Five Mile Point. You’ll find a bird hide and decked walkways through the forest. Exit is via main entrance on the Sea Road and Six Mile Point, so bring a packed lunch.

Wicklow and Greystones are 5 miles away
The nearest quaint towns with harbours and main streets are Greystones to the north and Wicklow to the south, both 5 miles away. Both have Tesco, Lidl and Aldi stores. Newtown Mount Kennedy is west of Newcastle and has a Dunne’s store. Ashford is south west and has a food market, garden cafe and boutique shops at the Mount Usher Garden.
