Trust us, we love food.
We’ve made several treks out to La Rose PDX in Beaverton for their amazing soufflé pancakes and lucky us they’ve opened their doppelgänger Champagne Poetry PDX just a short 13 min walk from The RoseBud! We finally got to pop in and its adorably instagramable and just as tasty. Loved the marshmallow latte and the raspberry jam served with the pancakes was THE JAM.

We tried ¿Por Qué No? Taqueria this week and can’t stop thinking about the chorizo taco, fresh crunchy salty chips, homemade salsas and perfect guacamole. We also loved their homemade sangria! This is a quick 10 min walk from The RoseBud on SE Hawthorne.

The closest ice cream spot to The RoseBud is Dairy Hill. Located on SE Hawthorne and SE 36th st, just a 10 min walk away, this classic ice cream spot has any of the traditional flavors you could possibly want as well as a handful of vegan options and serves up shakes, malts, banana splits, sundaes and homemade cookies that they use for their handmade ice cream sandwiches. If you’re in the neighborhood you’ll definitely see people walking around enjoying a scoop or two from this locally owned and locally focused sweet treat machine.

Just 2 blocks or a 4 minute walk from The RoseBud is my co-hosting Mom’s favorite breakfast place, @slappycakesportland. At Slappy Cakes you make your own pancakes and fold in your toppings on a griddle in the middle of your table! Toppings range from nuts, fruits, syrups and sauces and they also have traditional breakfast dishes. Our favorites are the country fried steak, cheesy grits, eggs benedict and their candied bacon. Best to make a reservation if you want to pancake, otherwise there are bar seats or take out available.

Recently featured on @theworlds50best as a @50bestdiscovery and named one of "America's best New Restaurants' by Bon Appetit this is our favorite, as fancy as Portland gets, dining experience in Portland. Coquine's very friendly chef, Katy Millard, who personally delivers dessert treats at the tastings and works the register at brunch, was a James Beard finalist for "Best Chef, Northwest" in both 2017 and 2018. Pop in for brunch then take a walk at Mt. Tabor for awesome PDX views. If you like walking, Coquine is just a 33 minute walk (mostly uphill) from The RoseBud or a 5 minute drive. They have a small parking lot and street parking is readily available. Check out our instagram @therosebnb for food pictures and menus. We suggest you arrive just before doors open for Brunch Friday-Sunday 10am-2 pm to make sure you don't miss out on their fresh baked goods including the famous Coquine Cookie which is a smoked and salted insane chocolate chip cookie and pastries baked with fruit from Chef Katy's garden. The don't accept reservations for brunch and Indoor dining is open. The amazing 4-course tasting menu is offered Friday-Sunday 4:30pm-10:00pm. A wine pairing is also offered. Vaccination cards are currently required for dinner dining. A pre-paid reservation is required for dinner. We did the tasting menu at Coquine in September 2021 and Brunch in October 2021. The tasting was a wonderful meal and the staff was incredible! Dessert was our favorite, lemon verbena pavlova. It was the perfect balance of salty and sweet. We were also overly excited about meeting Chef Katy 😂 The sommelier was incredible. Every wine pairing was like an elaborate bedtime story. Chef Katy hand delivered extra treats at the end. It was hard to choose just one but the “almost famous, a little bit famous” salted smokey chocolate chip cookie was insanely good. For Brunch, we wanted to eat everything. All the pastries looked amazing. The fig coffee cake, which featured figs from the Chef's garden, was so moist and amazing and there were scones, famous cookies, wonderful coffee and awesome brunch dishes. I had the Croque Madame which was perfect.

In one of the coolest parts of Hawthorne st., a 12 minute walk or just .4miles away from the RoseBud this is our favorite pizza place in Portland. It’s the closest we’ve had to NYC crust and sauce and the pizzas arrive still hot if you order delivery. Salads and throw back RC cola are great too but just the fact that they have It’s It ice cream sandwiches for dessert and bottles of wine, makes this one of our favorite delivery options. The pizzas are normal sized NYC pizzas not those ‘single person’ pizzas that most places have these days. The toaster oven does a great reheat job :)

I love a Hibachi grill! I walked here from the RoseBud, which was a 20 minute walk, 1.1 miles away. We didn’t make reservations, but it’s probably best if you call to make them. We ended up getting seated really quickly. I tried this again on Valentine’s Day without a ressie and also got in after about an hour. They have a small bar and a few tables for drinks and apps while you wait. The chefs are really fun to interact with and the food is super yummy. Onion volcanos and shrimp tail flips for the win! This is a delicious and entertaining meal.

Salt & Straw is a Portland institution! This famous ice cream chain started here and is known for their unusual ice cream flavors (olive oil, maybe blood…) and offers an unlimited non-rushed taste testing opportunity. Seriously, try every flavor before you decide. It’s a thing. Our favorite scoops are the cold brew coffee cashew praline and the vegan freckled mint chocolate chip. Salt & Straw is a 25 minute walk from The RoseBud, maybe a little long for some but it’s a fun walk though the SE Portland neighborhood. Also, SE Division, where it is located, has lots of great bars and restaurants to try.

Just a 4 minute walk from The RoseBud is a large group of food carts, The Bite on Belmont, with a wide range of cuisine and adult beverages. Portland has an incredible street food culture with groups of food carts sprinkled all over the city. My mom has been raving about the Poblano Pepper Mexican food cart for months now. The chips were perfectly crisp and salty and the guacamole was very nice. We tried the chorizo burrito which came with two homemade sauces, a mild green and a super spicy red. It was good for Portland Mexican food but wasn’t knock your socks of amazing, however, my mom is obsessed so there’s lots of love for this cart. We do prefer @porquenotaqueria for our Mexican fix but this is much closer and we did see someone bring over a loaded nacho plate which gave us major order envy. Located in this group of food carts you’ll find @kindcoffeecart, @brazilianhousepdx, @belmontkitchen (their sushi burritos look incredible), @herbsmacandcheese, @esidethaifoodcart, @hindsight_beer_cart and the most interesting and likely the next stop on our PDX street food tour, a Norwegian cart @vikingsoulfood which looks stupid good. We love a good meatball! With tons of dog friendly outdoor covered and uncovered seating, this is a year-round foodie stop for some great Portland street food. We’ll be trying all the carts as soon as we can!

Coffee Shops (Walkable)

We finally made it to Kind Coffee located in The Bite on Belmont food cart group, just a 2 block walk/4 minutes away from The RoseBud. Yes, we agree it’s crazy we haven’t tried this tasty coffee cart sooner! For those of you who want a more traditional coffee menu (no grass fed butter or ground pepper in these coffcoctions!) this is your spot! They do have some unique specials and will add CBD to any drink! but otherwise they don’t veer too far out of the American coffee lane. They serve up fast, hot and tasty coffees and the staff is so lovey and friendly! We tried the chai latte which was heaven. There is tons of dog friendly covered and uncovered seating for year-round sipping and they also serve sandwiches and other tasty treats. This is the closest ‘tradition’ coffee place to The RoseBud.

The closest coffee shop to the RoseBud at just a 4 minute walk away! This adorable dog friendly coffee shop with outdoor seating (one covered bench) has some of the most interesting coffees we’ve ever tasted. Like fancy cocktails, they use all sorts of ingredients to create these coffcoctions. We’ve tried Hug which has spicy cacao, smoked chilies and cinnamon, Oregon which has cascade hops, dolce de Leche and Jacobsen sea salt and sipped the Holy Grail which was the most interesting so far with turmeric, ginger, orange blossom water and topped with bee local cherry wood smoked honey, Jacobsen sea salt and Tellicherry pepper.

This spacious bar and restaurant, which has been around since the 1950s, serves breakfast all day and the in-house made chicken fingers, honey mustard and tots, as well as the nachos were tasty AF. We must go back for the biscuits and gravy. There’s a small game room with buck hunter, air hockey and some pinball machines but the best parts are the black light murals which cover the walls and the UFO light fixtures. They also have a large outdoor heated patio and a vast selection of house flavored vodkas. I recommend a strawberry and soda. Walk to Hawthorne, turn left and walk until you see the UFO in the sky. It’s just a 12 minute walk from The RoseBud.

Less than a 10 minute walk from The RoseBud and the closest bar on Hawthorne when walking west, Nick’s has become one of our favorite local bars. The husband and wife chef/bartending team will not remember you, but mention you like buck hunter and they will treat you like family until you leave. The hotdogs are served on toasted fluffy buns with top of the line ingredients and their house smoked wings are crispy and delicious! They also make all of their own sauces! The ranch is amazing and their bama sauce is a unique white, lightly spicy bbq. We highly recommend their Coney Island “sauce” as well which is a homemade meat sauce situation. Nick’s has been around since the 1950s and if you are into the Yankees almost every inch of wall is covered with memorabilia. They close at 9pm on weekdays and 12am on Friday and Saturday.

Pine State Biscuits is one of the food reasons why we moved to Portland. Everything is insanely good. There are several locations in Portland but our favorite and closest is on Division. Open M-Th 8am-2pm and F-Su 7am-3pm its a 10 minute drive or 40 minute walk from The RoseBud. If the weather is nice, grab your food to go and walk through the charming X shaped historic neighborhood Ladd's Addition and eat your brunch in the center circle park. See our guidebook entry on Ladd's Addition for more historical information. It's a must to order some biscuits with all of the spreads for the table. Our personal favorite brunch meal is the mushroom biscuits and gravy. On any other day we love meat in our gravy, but there is something so perfectly savory about the mushroom gravy at Pine State. We could drink it. There is no parking that we are aware of, street parking took a few times around the block to find a spot, but it's doable. There was a considerable line and we waited probably 20 minutes to order our food. After ordering, guests find their own table, but we were able to find one right away. There is a large covered seating area with roughly 12 tables as well as a little seating inside.

We discovered Pop Pizza on the Oregonian’s ‘Portland’s 10 best new pandemic-time pizzerias’ list and it did not disappoint! The ‘all the way to the edges’ cheese policy makes the most incredible toasted cheese side crust and the perfectly crispy, semi-thick bottom crust is what pizza dreams are made of. Nuvrei bakery owner, Marius Pop, created this pizza perfection after a 4 month crust lust and opened in SEish Portland in August 2020. My friend Jackie called this Thai place “viral” and the food makes you feel like you are at a hawker center in Singapore. Chicken and rice is what they do. We think these are the best burgers in PDX and the best part is you can order a full or a slider version so you can try the multiple varieties of these thoughtfully topped and tasty creations. "The Goonies" (1985) Astoria tour - This is The Walshes house in the Goon Docks from the Goonies. The current owners have even placed a sign out front to direct visitors from the bottom of their drive. You can also check out the building where Mikey’s dad worked, which was actually the Flavel House Museum. The County Jail, where Ma and Francs Fratelli break Jake out of lockup is there too, but it’s now the Oregon Film Museum. Its 1hr 45min from The RoseBud and can be added to the coast trip, as its 20 minutes from Cannon Beach.

"Twilight" (2005 - book, 2008 film) - The setting of the Twilight books and movies, Forks, Washington is an amazing and trippy experience where you will witness what happens to a tiny town made famous by a movie which is no longer that famous. Its pretty much deserted now but you can stop at the visitor center, where Bella's truck is parked outside, to get a self-guided town map of the 'locations' from the book. The pin filled world map is the inspiration for the one in the RoseBud. Author, Stephanie Meyer never visited Forks before writing the books so all the locations are completely made up based on description in the book but that adds to the ridiculousness of it all. My friend Jessica and I made Team Jacob and Team Edward t-shirts and had a hysterical and memorable drive around the town. One of the highlights of our self-guided tour was at the local police station where we talked to the local inmates through the fence in their outdoor secure area. You'll be asking yourself, "Is this part of the self-tour?" We ended our day at the restuarant that Bella and Edward ate mushroom raviolis at (and you can take home the special Bella’s Raviolis with you if you wish). If you are heading down from or up to Seattle we recommend adding this and the Hoh rainforest to your itinerary. Forks is about 4.5 hours from The RoseBud.

Less than a 10 minute walk away this park features an area for you dog to go off leash at certain times of day (usually in the morning and early evening). Check the posted signs for details. The park is about 1 mil. around and something seems to be always blooming there. The off-leash area is generally south middle section of the park. In the summer, sometimes it moves to the SW corner.

Neighborhoods

Ladd's Addition is a cool X-shaped historic neighborhood in SE Portland. We recommend grabbing to go food from Pine State Biscuits on Division and walking through the neighborhood to picnic in the center circle. Ladd's Addition is named after, William S. Ladd, the mid-19th-century Portland mayor who had a farm on the land. The homes were developed between 1905 and 1930. Ladd named the streets after trees with the exception of SE Ladd and SE Elliott, which he named after himself and his wife Caroline Elliott. It is Portland's oldest planned residential development and the streets are lined with American Elm trees. Each of the 4 small diamond shaped parks contain one of Portland's rose test gardens. One of the things that keeps Portland weird.
