Sightseeing

Proudly sitting high above the historic city of Edinburgh on the volcanic plug known as Castle Rock, this mighty fortress is one of Scotland’s most-visited attractions. It was built during the 12th century by David I, son of Saint Margaret of Scotland, and was the main Scottish Royal residence until the union of the crowns in 1603. Don't miss the firing of the one o'clock gun. The Castle opens daily at 9.30am and you should allow at least 2 hours to look around. Closing time varies according to the season but is usually 6pm in the summer and 5pm in the winter. You can save money (and time!) by ordering your tickets online in advance. Please note that the castle operates a timed ticketing system.

the Queen’s official residence in Edinburgh. Self-guided audio-tours include both historic rooms as well as those used for contemporary state visits, including the royal apartments in the north-west tower of the palace which were occupied by Mary, Queen of Scots. The historic Royal Apartments and State Apartments of Holyrood Palace can be visited most of the year (when not being used for state functions), as well as the gardens and grounds. Note that photography is not allowed inside the palace, but you can take photos of the exterior, gardens, and abbey. The palace opens daily at 9.30am, but note that as it is a working royal palace, it can close at short notice. Details of any closures can be found online. Tickets can be purchased in advance on line, and a combined ticket giving access to The Queens Gallery is also available.

Edinburgh’s highest peak, this rugged 822ft-high hill dominates the city, offering views across all its quarters and out across the Firth of Forth. It is the main peak of a group of hills in the city which form most of Holyrood Park. The hike up and down will take you about 2 hours – well worth it for the fabulous views over the city and beyond.

The museum has two main features – first, it has several floors featuring optical illusions, light tricks, old-fashioned games, and magic displays which we had a lot of fun playing with. Then, the “main attraction” is the Camera Obscura on the roof. Edinburgh’s Camera Obscura dates from the 19th century, making it one of the oldest visitor attractions in the city. The rooftop of the tower also offers great views of the castle and the city of Edinburgh. It’s open daily, times vary according to the season.

If you are only going to visit one church in Edinburgh, St Giles with its crown shaped steeple is the one. Also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, it is the principal place of worship for the Church of Scotland and the church itself dates from the 14th century.

A smartly converted whisky warehouse provides the perfect setting for this Michelin star restaurant. Chef-owner Tom Kitchin was born in Edinburgh and Scottish blood runs through this restaurant’s veins. The windswept highlands are brought inside courtesy of walls lined with tree bark, tartan tweed covered chairs, and dry stone walls which divide the room – and the personable serving team dressed in kilts help pull it all together. This is a restaurant serious about what it does but it is in no way stiff and starchy – just look around and you’ll see guests relaxed and having fun. Menus offer a mix of time-honoured classics which have bold flavours and a rustic appearance, and fresh modern dishes where there are fewer ingredients on the plate and skilled preparation allows each one to shine. Prime Scottish produce – particularly vegetables – are the chef’s passion.
