9 picturesque shopping alleyways in the Amsterdam canal belt. In the hart of Unesco’s World Heritage, just behind Dam Square and on the way from Anne Frank to Rijksmuseum. De 9 Straatjes is the ideal neighbourhood to get to know Amsterdam in all its variety and richness. The area offers a great overview of the architectural style of Amsterdam heritage. After 400 years it is still very lively with artisanal businesses, hidden cafes, hotspot restaurants and galleries, and a unique offer of specialized and authentic shops. Dealing in fashion, shoes & bags, vintage, antiques, housewares and one-offs. It’s areas like this that really make you feel comfortable in Amsterdam, so they say!

Ouderkerk aan de Amstel is a quaint village located south of Amsterdam on the bank of the Ouderkerkerplas lake. The village dates back to the 12th century and is best known for its parish houses and Jewish cemetery. Pretty village near Amsterdam Ouderkerk aan de Amstel offers a scenic refuge from the hustle and bustle of its infamous neighbour to the north. The village is a popular destination for bike rides from Amsterdam – just follow the Amstel river south for 40 minutes or so until you reach it. Ouderkerk is located close to the Amsterdamse Bos (Amsterdam Forest) and the village of Uithoorn, which lies further along the river. Things to do in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel Visitors typically head to the village to take in its architecture, which includes historic churches, houses and De Zwaan (an impressive windmill). There’s also Beth Haim of Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, the Netherlands’ oldest Jewish cemetery. It opened in 1614 and features elaborate tombstones that include human figures. Among the cemetery’s most famous residents: Rabbi Menasseh Ben Israel, a colleague and collaborator of Rembrandt, and the Moroccan diplomat Samuel Pallache. In the summer, the clean waters of the Ouderkerkerplas lake make for a popular outdoor swimming spot. Ouderkerk restaurants and accommodation Ouderkerk offers plenty of choice of restaurants and cafes, with most of the popular spots located along the river. The hip Restaurant Jamie van Heije is a popular choice with diners, as is Loetje aan de Amstel across the river, with its buzzing riverside terrace. My big brother and nephew Olle & niece Julia also live in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel near the bakery and the drawbridge.
