Food scene

I will mention my recommended walks in another section. Here I will say that I have been known to drop into the bar for a drink on the way home from my walk. The building is historic and the bar staff and locals are friendly and welcoming. They certainly contribute to the Hotel's success. The dining room is open for lunch and dinner Wednesdays - Sundays and it has had a great facelift. There is also a lounge. I do recommend it.

We're venturing out from Mount Kembla now but, while the historic Austinmer Hotel was demolished to make way for this new hotel, it is lovely. My family usually go for breakfast but it has a real lunch and dinner scene. It is a fairly large premise. Please don't park illegally. It is likely you will be fined. The views and the opportunity for an ocean swim or short walks are a further incentive.

We are now in the category of fine dining and within that category this is definitely my first choice. It is not outrageously expensive (but not cheap) and it has always offered a wonderful experience of service, food and cocktails. Mind you, the cocktails were almost their 'thing' but that is a week by week option lately. I'd say it is a movable feast if that wasn't a terrible pun. It is on City Beach and you can try asking for a table overlooking the ocean when you book.

It's on the beach. Thirroul Beach is comparatively short. The cafe's breakfasts and lunches are fine. They offer dinners on a Friday night in summer. That is a lovely experience.

This is in Kiama. I’ve eaten here many times. Some claim the coffee alone is worth the trip but that’s a brave call. The food is delicious with a few healthier options than the average cafe. I notice they sell alcohol now. However, the Sebel Harbourside is just up the road, sticking to the left. Since COVID they only do lunch on Fridays and the weekends. It is a modern hotel built on the historic site of an old school. At least one of the old school buildings is still standing and it quite beautiful.

This is a WOW for me. An historic pub - 1recently taken over by The Shellharbour Club. The facade has been lovingly restored and a modern extension built on. The extension overlooks The Pacific Ocean. You can’t book. I’ve been four times so far and haven’t had any trouble finding a place to park. But 🤷🏻‍♀️. There is parking either side of hotel but one is not accessible to the other. There is also a bit of parking for walkers to the Sea Cliff Bridge a tiny bit further up and on the left. The hotel is on the right if you are driving from the south.

There are a lot of wineries around the southern highlands and the south coast. This one is a ten kilometre drive from Berry so you can easily do both in one day- and then some. The winery’s restaurant was lovely the only time I’ve been but the cellar door wasn’t open.

Sightseeing

Well it is the face of The Illawarra and the walk across the bridge and back is a must if you are staying for any length of time. My advice: As you drive along Lawrence Hargrave Drive you will see The Scarborough Hotel on your right. It has two small carparks. Park there and walk the easy two kilometres to the Bridge. You will then have secured some limited parking if you want to drop into the hotel for breakfast or lunch or a drink. If you don't have time for that, there is parking further on in Leeder Park. It is on your left. There is parking just before the Bridge on your right. You will, however, have to compete with tourist buses for the limited spots. I’ve never seen the buses early in the day though. If all of those options fail, drive across the bridge and find parking at one of the streets on the right. The first street does say ‘ No right turn’ though.

This view is one of my favourites. It is Farm Beach at Killalea State Park. The view is from the top. You need to walk down to the beach. There are two paths. It is very popular with surfers. It is a small beach and mostly known only to locals. From the beach, I return by walking over the rocks (at low tide) and then past the car park and the drive. You can then turn left to The Mystics Beach but the walk down to the beach is, I would suggest, somewhat treacherous. Otherwise just turn right back to your car. There are two to three car parks so don't be discouraged if the first one, near the cafe, is full. Keep driving and looking to the left. There is a coffee shop but I would recommend a drive into Shellharbour Village where there are a few very good cafes and the quite nice Beach Hotel on the harbour. There is the brand new Marina. I don't like it but you might like to check it out anyway. It think it is evolving all the time.

The Treat Factory in Berry is a worthwhile visit. As you head into the very popular village of Berry, follow the signs on the left just before the village proper. I think the name says it all. It sells their own sauces, relishes, oils, vinegars, lollies and chockies. You get the idea. There is also an ice cream shop next door. I’ve never bought the ice cream there but there are one or two very delicious ice cream shops in the village. The village also boasts the Berry Bakery for their pies. This is also the only space I have to tout the amazing views on the drive from Kiama to Berry. It is world class.

This is an interesting and calming space and just ten minutes drive from my home. The gardens are lovely. There is, of course, a Buddhist Temple. There are two options for eating. The cafeteria near the temple upstairs isn’t as inviting as the cafe downstairs and near the car park. The vegetarian meals are delicious with generous portions.

This is an easy 30 or so minute drive from here. It is in a national park so parking costs $12.00. It is a 4.5k return walk but at times the walk is a real hike so it feels longer. It is safe but you would need to be super, super fit to push a stroller or carry a toddler. There are a couple of shorter, easier walks but the falls are the main attraction. The walk is truly gorgeous, past the rivers and pools and among shady trees all before you see the falls themselves. There is a picnic spot. The Lyrebird Cafe has not been opened on the two occasions I have been there. I go into the small village of Jamberoo to the pub or the Crumb and Crust cafe. This attraction is just past the Jamberoo Action Park. I can’t imagine you would have the energy to walk to the falls after a day at park so go first. It’s a good idea to go early (it’s open at 9:00am and closes at 5:00pm) and secure parking.

This is an hour’s drive south from me. It was Arthur Boyd’s home and studio. The gallery space is new, the property on The Shoalhaven River is gorgeous. There is a cafe and I think they do a picnic basket for you. Boyd’s homestead is closed for restoration just now. Hopefully it will be open in2023 but the trip there through the countryside is well worth the effort.

For children

If you have children then you have no doubt heard of this. It is approximately thirty minutes drive south from here and, while I must admit I have only dropped my grandsons off, all three of them would highly recommend it. The eleven year old wants the annual pass every year for Christmas.

This is along the Jamberoo Mountain Road so in the same area as Jamberoo Action Park and Minnamurra Rainforest. Unfortunately, you can't access it through the Jamberoo Mountain Road at the moment. You have to go to the Southern Highlands and access it that way. (There's been a landslide on JMRoad.) According to their website they are open seven days a week in the school holidays and Thursday’s to Sunday’s otherwise. You should book ahead. I’m frightened of heights so I’ve never been.

My favourite brunch places

I better recommend something on the beach. This is right on North Beach. The food is very good. It is, of course, very popular so you might have to wait. I don't think they take bookings, at least not for small parties. Mind you, there are other options very close by and you will find them easily enough. For instance, I like The Health Hut opposite The Novotel but it doesn't have the views. North Beach is a lovely beach by the way. Further up the lovely walkway towards the Harbour, and more eateries, is a much safer swimming spot for little ones. There is also an ocean pool and a small, covered pool for toddlers. They also have a restaurant near the blow hole in Kiama. The only time I’ve been I was underwhelmed.

It's taken me a while to warm to this cafe and I much prefer to sit inside the small dining area rather than the larger one you will see as you enter. It is right on Bulli Beach. There are a couple of tables that seat two outside the dining area. I would now list it as one of my favourite places. The beach is there, there is an ocean pool (but there are heaps of those in The Illawarra) and then a pretty and level walk.

This isn’t on the beach and the setting is certainly far from exciting. It is also about a 20’ drive on the Kiama turnoff along the highway. It is closed Mondays but open for breakfast and lunch every other day. It is a large and beautifully atmospheric place. I actually love it!!! It is my favourite place to go for brunch. The coffee, the food and the service are all highly recommended. Since I wrote this The Woolshed has changed hands. It is even better and it is licensed. The fantastic Albion Park Bypass is now finished so you need to take the turn off on the left towards Albion Park Rail and then you are just about there.

WALKS

I walk - you can cycle - down the hill to Cordeaux Road, then head left and walk until you have to cross at Rehability (a gym) and go behind that and along the train track all the way towards Stones Road. Facing the road you will see a plaque dedicated to, and describing, the worst mining disaster in Australia's history. The Denrobium Mine photo was taken from the top of Stones Road so continue up towards the right. You will see Port Kembla in the distance from the top. Walk back again and cross to the right on Stones Road and head towards Bradford Breaker lookout. The sign says it is a 1.2k return walk. I clock it at 1.4. Again there are views of Port Kembla. When you come down, walk up that little hill on Benjamin Street. I turn immediately left at the top because the laneway is pretty. Then walk up the road back towards Cordeaux Road, past the Mount Kembla Village Hotel where you can stop in for a well deserved drink before you head back. You will need to be fortified for the walk back up the hill towards the house.

What do I do? I drive to Gloucester Boulevarde and park my car there. Then I walk UP Military Road to Hill 60. After a look around - and you can take a picnic - I venture down the road straight ahead and veering right - towards the ocean. You can also drive by the way. There are some lovely Aboriginal artworks depicting the Dreamtime Story of The Five Islands. I highly recommend it. There are also plans to have picnic spots there. Then walk, or drive, back to Gloucester Boulevarde and continue the long, flat walk along the beach. There is a beach called MM Beach (after Metal Manufacturing). There is some exercise equipment there. You can continue right up to the end and you will see 'Lo Stretto', a cafe/pizzeria ahead. The address is 91 Foreshore Drive. At the time of writing (October 2020) they served breakfast between 7:00-11:00 and lunch 11:00-3:00. On Fridays and Saturdays they serve dinner from 5:00-10:00 pm. I wouldn't recommend relying on that later time too much. I really like the views of both the ocean and the smoke stacks of the port. (Seriously.) It is worthwhile mentioning that you are near Port Kembla Beach (my favourite) and Port Kembla Olympic Pool, which has free entry. There is a cafe between the pool and the beach. Hmm. pool, cafe, beach. I call it my trifecta.

BARS

This venue is less a wine bar and more a tasting cellar but you can buy wine by the glass or bottle and drink it there. It is in 28 Victoria Street, Wollongong and is fairly new. It seems to be a very quiet part of town. Check the website for opening times. My daughter was able to organise a wine tour of wineries in the South Coast with the owner who owns Simall Wines. The cheese platter, (half for $30 or a full one for $60) is delicious. I tried six wine tastings for $15.00 and, on my visit, the pourings were so generous (I only tried three) I didn’t dare have any more. On my visit, my partner and I were the only ones in the bar so there was no vibe as such. It was 5:00pm on a miserable Saturday. We enjoyed the wine very much. It is not, I would suggest, cheap.

I have been here. It is nice. If you drive, park in the shopping centre carpark and walk out through the stairs. If you are staring at Coles, turn left and take the stairs outside.
