I have many memories of playing in the river and picnicking at one of the numerous picnic areas. My family especially enjoyed jumping into the deep swimming hole there. There are many fishing spots up and down the river as well. Plan to spend the whole day and pack a lunch.

I have so many great memories on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The lookouts offer convenient places to view the mountains and the many hiking trails can take you to waterfalls and views that will take your breath away. There is so much to see and do! On their website you can find tons of information and a map. Plan your day ahead with hiking and site seeing; or just set out with a picnic lunch and drive until you find the perfect spot. Either way, the parkway is the perfect way to experience the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains!

This is my family's favorite hiking spot. The trail is well maintained and only moderately steep. Once you reach the top, it's a breathtaking view you will never forget. A few words of caution, families with little children should be extra careful. There is no railing and staying on the right trail is very important. I know someone who wandered off the trail and ended up lost in the Linville Gorge. Not a good way to spend your vacation. Make sure you pack plenty of water, snacks and a camera!

Grassy Creek Falls [PRIVATE PROPERTY] is a 2.8 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Little Switzerland, North Carolina that features a waterfall and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, and bird watching and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Linville Falls are the biggest falls you will see this side of the Blue Ridge Parkway. You can find convenient parking and well maintained trails to the lookouts. There are two ways to view the falls; from the top and the bottom. The trails that overlook the falls are easier to access and more family friendly with little ones. The trail to the bottom is fun to hike down but a little steep coming back. If your adventurous, try both! I would recommend dividing it up into two days though. Bring your fur baby too!

"The Orchard at Altapass, one of the most visited locations on the Blue Ridge Parkway. For the last quarter century, we have diligently worked to "save the good stuff"—the regional traditions, culture, and the land on which all was built. We're accomplishing that by propagating the best heirloom apples possible (with the least amount of chemicals) and hosting activities for all ages that educate and entertain. We invite you to come for a visit. You don't want to leave without a walk through the apple "forest." Bring your appetites for the hot apple pie alamode with hand-scooped ice cream. Pick your own apples or purchase them in our General Store (in season). Return to a simpler time for an hour or an afternoon at the family- (and pet-) friendly Orchard At Altapass."

The mountains near Spruce Pine, North Carolina are among the richest in minerals and gems in the United States. More than 300 varieties are showcased in the Museum of North Carolina Minerals, located on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Because of the Parkway’s popularity, this museum may introduce more people to minerals and gems that any other such facility in the country.
