Walk along Southcliffe Promenade from Walton-on-the-Naze to Frinton enjoying the views of the beautiful sandy beaches and brightly painted beach huts. When the tide is out you can walk on the beach, build sandcastles and collect seashells. Try flying a kite to make the most of the ocean breeze, stopping for refreshments at one of the beach kiosks. Dogs are welcome most of the year on certain beaches and it’s a great place to meet other dog lovers.

Currently being renovated for Summer 2022, Walton Pier is the second longest in England. Traditional Victorian pier originally built for the steamers that used to carry passengers from Clacton pier along the coast. Now an amusement arcade, bowling alley and fairground rides, great for rainy days. There is a licensed cafe too. Alternatively you can walk along the pier and enjoy the great views of the town or try fishing (check where permits are needed).

The Naze is an unspoilt headland of heath, saltmarshes and sandy beaches. It is home to a large number of migratory birds and a nature reserve. However the area is under the constant threat of erosion and measures are being undertaken in an attempt to protect the region from further damage. Here you can look for fossils. Inside the Naze tower, climb the steps to the top to see right along the headland and out over the sea. Enjoy the small art gallery and then treat yourself to a homemade snack from the pretty tearoom. Order tea and cakes to sit and eat outside to enjoy the views.

Known locally as the Walton Backwaters, the nature reserve liesbeyond Colchester at the outermost end of the county between the Colne and Stour estuaries, where the rolling cornfields of the Tendring Peninsula slide into the North Sea. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty that you can explore where the Arthur Ransome set his famous book ‘Swallows and Amazon’s’

Managed by Essex Wildlife Trust, The Naze is a geological site of special scientific interest. My kids really enjoy The Naze Fossil Sculpture Trail and we always have to pat the stone shark!

Visit Walton Maritime Museum on the way to The Naze. Housed in The Old Lifeboat House, which was built in 1884 to house Walton’s first RNLI lifeboat. Displays include some great artefacts from Walton’s history as a seaside holiday town as well as fossils etc. When I last went I particularly liked the old photos and memorabilia of the vintage pier variety shows.

The Century Cinema is worth the trip to Clacton. I love this independent cinema that dates back to the Golden Age of cinema, the 1930’s. It offers great value tickets and is much loved by locals that fought to save it. Re-opened in 2013 by the Picturedrome Electric Theatre Company, they have preserved many of the original features but it now has two auditoriums that show the latest blockbusters using modern digital equipment. Reasonably priced food and drinks (including alcohol), comfy seats and Good disabled access.

Traditional seaside theatre, some of the most famous stars of song and entertainment have trodden the boards at the West Cliff Theatre. We went to an 80’s tribute night and had a great time but they have different shows on all year round so definitely worth looking on their website to see what’s on when you’re visiting. the Stage Door Bar has a lovely collection of vintage posters and photos where you can order drinks for the interval as well has enjoy time in before or afterwards. This is also the home of West Cliff Youth Theatre who put on regular productions too.

The pretty beach huts lining the edges of the promenade, overlooking the beaches are a big part of Walton life. Featured on tv, captured in many a holiday snap, they perfectly sum up the quintessential British seaside resort. Simply enjoy looking at the quirky colours or catch a glimpse of the kitsch interiors as you walk past or consider booking one for your holiday so you can enjoy your own pot of tea and sandwiches- or a glass of bubbly - as the sun sets.

Food scene

There are lots of places to eat in and around Walton from Award Winning fish and chip shops to gastro pubs and bistros. Prefer something a bit more adventurous? Then check out some of the Thai, Indian and Chinese restaurants, there are plenty to choose from. Want to cook at home? We have a great bakery stall and fresh fruit and veg on the Market in Walton, open Thursdays and Saturdays. The bakers stall does homemade pastries too. My favourite place to shop is the fresh fish stall on the esplanade (to the left of the pier). He comes the same days as the market and sells locally caught fish and seafood on a little stall in front of the van. Totally delicious but get there early as he only has limited stock.
This is my favourite place to eat in Walton. Lovely traditional pub with cosy open fires, just right after a bracing walk on the beach, good beer and amazing food. I had the best sea bass ever served with a fish stew, samphire and crushed new potatoes - beautiful! Equally tasty is the homemade soup on the lunch menu and the chefs homemade sticky toffee pudding and ice cream is a must if, like me, you have a sweet tooth. The menu changes regularly and offers seasonal, locally sourced food at reasonable prices. They also do a popular Sunday roast. The landlord chef and front of house landlady are both welcoming and were able to accommodate all of my families varied dietary requirements. As the food is all homemade they know exactly what’s in it, which helps when it comes to allergies etc. Definitely worth a visit in my opinion. Be warned, this pub is a gem and gets booked up so make sure you reserve a table.

Award winning fish and chip shop with friendly staff and good sized portions. Take your chips into the beach or dine in on less sunny days. High chairs available and very child friendly.

Don’t be put off by the exterior, whilst this might not be beautiful the food is. Really popular with locals, it offers great authentic Thai food at really reasonable prices. I’ve eaten in and had takeaway and both were really good. Staff friendly too and helpful if you aren’t sure what to have (like me!) Good vegetarian choices too.

Great place for water sports including dinghy sailing, canoeing and cruising or just to go and look at the boats moored there. It used to be a Royal Navy Observation Tower with a few huts but now is a purpose built clubhouse with restaurant and bar. Nice bar food in a great location it’s worth a visit.

Situated right by the pier, this traditional beach kiosk sells ice cold drinks and ice creams, perfect for a hot day. Also sells buckets, spades etc. In colder weather grab a steaming cup of tea to enjoy as you stride across the beach. Please note the beach kiosks are often closed in winter but even then on cold, sunny days they are sometimes open.

As the name suggests, last cafe on the beach towards the Naze. In the Summer check out the free fire dancing nights, usually on a Friday evening at low tide, pre-order delicious fish and chips and watch the fire eaters dance and dazzle on the sands after watching the sun set. Beautiful.

Beautiful sandy beach, minutes from the flat. A firm family favourite the beach slopes gently meaning you can paddle for ages before it starts to get deep. Collect shells on the shore, walk the dog (on permitted beaches) or simply enjoy the stunning sunrises and sunsets, it’s a great place to be. Take a picnic, grab an ice cream from one of the beach kiosks or get fish and chips from the town, this is a safe, clean beach that proudly flies the Blue flag it was awarded again in 2020. Get out and enjoy the fresh air all year round. At low tide you can walk on the beach the whole way to Frinton-On-Sea in one direction or The Naze in the other. Lifeguards during peak season.

Covid-19 restrictions

During this challenging time a seaside break is a great way to get some sea air and relax. However, before you come, please check the Tendring District Council website for information about any local restrictions due to the pandemic. Most of the tourist attractions have reopened after full lockdown but not all. This could obviously change at any time so it’s possible that not all of the places I’ve mentioned in my Airbnb guidebook will be open. Also be aware that many pubs and restaurants are only offering a takeaway service at different times so again, please check first.
