Bukit Larut, formerly known as Maxwell Hill, is a popular highland destination in Malaysia. Located at an altitude of 1,250m above sea level approximately 10 km from Taiping town in Perak. This place is an ideal destination for those wanting to escape from the heat and humidity of Malaysia’s lowlands. Personal vehicles are not allowed to drive up the hill station, only can take government approved four-wheel-drive vehicle from the foothills. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the top. But make sure you get there early because the tickets are limited and run out very fast. The counter opens at 8.30am but the queue may start as early as 7am. Some folks might prefer to walk up the hill (about 13km). There is the tarmac road which the jeeps take, and also a jungle trail that goes all the way up. The walk might take 3 to 5 hours depending on how fast you go and how fit you are.

Food scene

If you are looking for a hearty breakfast or a fulfilling lunch in Taiping, then look no further than Larut Matang Hawker Centre. The hawker centre is divided into two sections: halal and non-halal section which is an uncommon phenomena in Malaysia. Food must eat: Fishball Fried Kuey Teow, Wantan Mee, Kwer Teow Soup, Nyoya Kuih, Prawn Mee, Hor-Ka-Sai (kopi+Milo) and so on. You just randomly pick and it will not disappoint you. The price of food is cheap too!

Having been in operation for close to 100 years, Yut Sun is somewhat a local institution in Taiping and often frequented by locals of all races. For Muslim foodies, fret not, this restaurant is halal-certified. The must-try here is the signature Hainanese chicken chop. The dish features a battered chicken cutlet, deep-fried then drenched in brown sauce, with peas, tomatoes and potato wedges on the side. The chicken is juicy and crispy, while the brown sauce is the perfect complement — we bet you’ll be wanting a second serving!
