Places to visit

Obviously Smoo Cave is a very popular pit stop. There’s really quite limited parking which is not ideal, but there are toilets etc at the car park. It’s then a brief, but quiet steep zig zag walk down to the beach, across a wooden bridge and you find yourself at the entrance to the cave. It’s a huge cavernous space which of course oozes atmosphere. Ahead of time this was one of the places I struggled finding proper information on so here are some tips: -The main caves seem to be open 24/7 -The boat trips run I guess most days during the high season, but no info on these is readily available. You have to pay in cash (£4.00) BUT they are very popular. The last one of the day is already at 15:30 or so in the afternoon which is rather limiting. They take you further into the caves -After heavy rains there is a waterfall people rave about, but when I went it was alas not to be seen. If you just walk in as I did you can still penetrate a little further into this underworld enclave. Its tremendous size makes it feel very welcoming and it’s simply an impressive phenomenon to see as part of your trip. The sound of the water, the shape of the rocks, it’s beguiling.

This Historic Scottish Castle was built around its 15th-century tower house. 30 minutes from Inverness sits Cawdor Castle and its beautiful gardens. This ancient Scottish castle was originally built for the Calder family and later passed to the Campbells in the 16th century. This is still a castle in residence, as home to the Dowager Countess Cawdor, stepmother of Colin Campbell, 7th Earl Cawdor. Cawdor Castle is one of the most well known of the Scottish castles. This is due to it’s literary connection to William Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth. It was here the Shakespeare’s title character was made “Thane of Cawdor”.

If you’re a bit of a Harry Potter fan (just like me ) then you really don’t want to miss seeing the Harry Potter Train, a.k.a “Hogwarts Express”, thundering along on your next trip to Scotland. You’ll need to head into the stunning Scottish Highlands and seek out the tiny village of Glenfinnan, huddled on the shore of Loch Shiel. It’s around a 30-minute picturesque drive from the large town of Fort William, known as the gateway to the Scottish Highlands. Limited public transport, both train and bus, is available between Fort William and Glenfinnan a few times a day but the easiest way is by car. Set the Glenfinnan Visitor Center on your satnav (PH37 4LT) and enjoy the drive! Once you near the well-signposted Glenfinnan Visitor Center you’ll see the car park right beside it. It’s £3 to park here and can get a little busy around the scheduled steam train times.

20 minutes from Inverness by car .Fort George is the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain. Following the 1746 defeat at Culloden of Bonnie Prince Charlie, George II created the ultimate defence against further Jacobite unrest. The result, Fort George, is the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain, if not Europe. Its garrison buildings, artillery defences bristling with cannon, and superb collection of arms - including bayoneted muskets, pikes, swords and ammunition pouches - provide a fascinating insight into 18th century military life.
