Restaurants Near Las Gaviotas, Rosarito Beach, Baja, Mexico

Across the street from Las Gaviotas is the Bleu Galley deli and cafe with sit-down breakfast and light afternoon bistro bites as well as take-away. The focus is on fresh ingredients, including dishes that feature vegetables. The owner, Agnes Cameleyra, opened Bleu Galley in December 2017. Ms. Cameleyra was raised in the Bordeux area and models her restaurant after those she grew to love, with tables and kitchen nearby as if you were entertaining family. Ms. Cameleyra has lived in the Rosarito Beach area since 2012. She keeps her menu small so she can concentrate on providing the best quality dishes possible with ingredients and flavors that closing match those of the south of France. In addition to the flavors of France, Ms. Cameleyra has brought the decor and colors of her Bordeux region as well. Monday 8:30AM–2PM, Tuesday Closed, Wednesday Closed, Thursday 8:30AM–2PM, Friday 8:30AM–2PM, Saturday 8:30AM–2PM, Sunday 8:30AM–2PM

Colectivo Surf, a seafood restaurant located across the street from Las Gaviotas, in Rosarito Beach, Baja, Mexico, serves seafood and micro beers in a beautiful environment. Live music is provided nightly. Located above the White Horse grocery/liquor, this spot has TONS of space, inside and out. There’s local art on the walls, surfboards on display and the wall-to-wall windows make this an awesome spot to catch the sunset. The outside patio is enormous and is even equipped with a separate bar for really busy days. The Surf Brew Restaurant primarily serves sushi, but the non-fish items I’ve had were delicious! They have lots of fruit and veggie roll options as well as a quesadilla, which always makes me happy! Not to mention, the chips and salsa are top-notch. My husband, on the other hand, is a savage sushi eater and absolutely loves their fish. It’s all locally sourced from fishermen in the area and I think that makes all the difference (not to mention, it’s sustainable!). The beers are awesome as well. They have their own beers as well as some other local options. Haven’t had a bad one yet! And when you get sick of beer, they have plenty of tequila and wine to keep you happy. Last but certainly not least is the service. It’s the best! Super quick and genuinely friendly. Our favorite server is Victor. He always has a smile on his face and he’s seriously one of the most intelligent people I have ever spoken to! If you haven’t been to Surf Brew yet, you’re missing out!

A short walk from the entrance to Las Gaviotas is possibly the best pizza place in the world. Maybe that is going too far but it is really good. Ollie’s Brick Oven Pizza has beautiful decor and wonderful friendly staff. Ollie’s handcrafted pizzas are made with Italian flour and fresh toppings. For dessert try my nice’s favorite, Nutella pizza. When not to busy the chef will bring children behind the counter and help them prepare their own pizza dough and toppings. Ollie’s brick oven pizza restaurant has a very family-oriented feel Open Wednesday thru Sunday 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Other restaurants within walking distance of Las Gaviotas include the French breakfast restaurant “Bleu Galley,” and the seafood restaurant “Collectivo Surf.”

A must stop! You’ll find the stand with a small counter/bar and about 5 stools. The atmosphere isn’t really a word I’d use to describe it, but “friendly people, great service, great food and great value” definitely are terms I’d use. In all the years we’ve been customers for lunch or a light evening meal, they have never disappointed us. They serve only carne asada (steak) and al pastor (pork) tacos and tortas. There is, however, a small stand just south of them (K38 Fish Tacos) that does have fish tacos. The one with fish isn’t the same operation as Surf Taco, but you can access it from the same parking lot. Their fish and shrimp tacos are excellent. There is a small market between the two to purchase drinks/beer. Tacos run about $1.10 and tortas are about $3. Try mixing the Asada and al pastor to mix things up. If you don’t stop here during your visit to Baja, you’ll be doing yourself a great disservice. Our family loves Taco Surf so much we bought the original surfing taco sign and hung it in the downstairs bedroom of Endless Summer Villa. No other taco stand comes close to taste and service. Taco Surf is located 1 kilometer north of Las Gaviotas, in front of the statue of Jesus. Other restaurants within walking distance of Las Gaviotas include the French breakfast restaurant “Bleu Galley,” the seafood restaurant “Collectivo Surf” and “Ollie’s Brick Oven Pizza.”

Surfing at Las Gaviotas

The surf break at Las Gaviotas is an exposed reef break that has reliable surf. Autumn and winter are the favored times of the year for waves. Offshore winds blow from the northeast. Most of the surf here comes from groundswells and the ideal swell direction is from the south. Waves break both left and right and are surfable at all stages of the tide. The best part – It very rarely gets crowded here. Las Gaviotas SurfSurf almost perfect waves with No Crowds! Las Gaviotas can be your personal, private Baja surf spot. Stay at Endless Summer Villa or Point Break Villa and surf right outside your door. Plenty of space to store your boards and park your car where it is safe right inside the walled, gated community where there is an hourly, walking patrol of security officers. Las Gaviotas SurfThe surf conditions are similar to Southern California. During the months of October to April, surfing in Baja, the water temperature ranges between 50 and 60 degrees, so it is always best to wear a full suit and booties. Swells during the winter period typically come from the West to Northwest and are fairly consistent. Summer months offer great surfing with spring suit to trunk conditions with temperatures ranging from high 60’s to mid 70’s. Las Gaviotas SurfThe Las Gaviotas break sometimes referred to as “Gavs” is mostly fast power rights (with occasional lefts) and holds into the afternoon with kelp beds helping just outside the break. The height is head high to double overhead with a regular consistency. The skill required is from beginner to pro. When you stay at Point Break Villa or Endless Summer Villa you can sit on your patio and watch the conditions and head out when you and the break are ready.

Tide Pools at Las Gaviotas

Be sure to explore the tide pools at Las Gaviotas. There are lots to see if you look closely. In them, you may see flowery sea anemones, an elusive octopus, spongy deadman’s fingers, starfish, sea cucumber, crabs, sea urchins, and a myriad of other creatures. Please remember, you are visiting a delicate and fragile ecosystem. The tidepools are a wonderful discovery zone, but be careful if you visit. Few animals in this ecosystem can harm humans, but many animals are sensitive, and can even be killed when handled or just touched by humans. Bring reef walkers or shoes you do not mind getting wet for sure footing.

Spear Fishing at Las Gaviotas

Las Gaviotas Spear Fishing Catch your dinner outside your front door with Las Gaviotas spear fishing. Morning is best when the water is glassy with no wind. The dry season of July thru November is best when there is less silt in the ocean from rain run off. The photo above was taken in April which shows that anytime is a good time for spear fishing. Equipment A spear fishing sling with a trident point is sufficient to catch edible fish. Depending on the time of year, you may or may not want a wet suit. Mask, snorkel and fins are also a must. If you are renting one of the Las Gaviotas rentals, bring all equipment with you as you will not be able to rent near by. For ecological reasons, please just float in the water and do not stand on the bottom which may hurt the living organisms you touch. Also, only catch what you will eat. For shoreline fishing at Las Gaviotas, see our Blog post: “Fishing at Las Gaviotas” at LasGaviotas.net
