This is one of our favourites and the nearest good restaurant to us. it's a bar and gastropub just 4 minutes walk from the flat. The food is delicious and the staff friendly. On sunday nights they have live music. Price per head for a meal including wine is about £30.

This huge covered food market is foodies' heaven. As one of our friends described it: 'a temple to gluttony!' It has food stalls selling fresh and specialist food from all around the world as well as excellent local produce from around the UK. There are also lots of great restaurants in the market and in the streets around. It's open on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Wednesday and Thursday are quieter. Take the number 40 bus from Denmark Hill which goes direct to London Bridge and the entrance to the market.

From the outside this looks like an ordinary kebab takeaway restaurant but it's a secret gem which is extremely popular locally. The quality of the meat and the particular style of grilling are extraordinary. you can eat in or takeaway and it's incredibly good value. For vegetarians the vegetable kebabs are stunning – made with special sauce that transforms them into dish that meat eaters also love.

This small local cafe is tucked away in a side street off Camberwell Church Street but is worth seeking out. It has delicious coffee, home-made cakes and savoury food all reasonably priced. It's very relaxed and there are tables outside when the weather's warmer.

This small creperie is extremely popular with students from the Camberwell College of Art, with good reason. The crepes (both savoury and sweet) are cheap and delicious. Everything is cooked freshly in the tiny kitchen area. They also do delicious smoothie combinations. The place has a lovely laid-back vibe, particularly good for a relaxed Sunday brunch.

Theo's pizza restaurant opened in 2016 and has been incredibly popular since then. All the pizzas are cooked freshly in the wood-burning stove using the highest quality ingredients. The menu is very short and everything we've had has been excellent so far. The restaurant has a nice vibe and it's good value for money. You can eat in or takeaway.

This is our favourite local Indian restaurant which serves reliably good quality meals. It's particularly popular with the doctors and nurses from Kings College Hospital and is equally good value either to eat in or takeaway. The menu is relatively standard 'traditional' UK Indian restaurant food, but all freshly and imaginatively cooked.

This is the best Chinese restaurant locally. It serves very interesting Chinese food from Xinjiang province– large portions and excellent value. Here is the Time Out review: A pioneer of London’s trend for branching out into regional Chinese cuisines, Silk Road quietly churns out favourites from the north-west frontier province of Xinjiang. Dishes can be fiery, but are also balanced with a plethora of spices, a legacy from the Silk Road that ran through the desert area, transporting treasures from east and west. The cuisine of Xinjiang’s Turkic Uighur Muslims, the area’s largest minority, exhibits many of the hearty traditional standbys found around Central Asia – notably kebabs and dumplings – but with a bold Chinese influence, bringing a spiciness and vibrancy its counterparts elsewhere can lack. Silk Road’s short menu includes Sichuan-style dishes – perhaps an influence of the ethnic Han owners – but skip past these dishes to focus on the Xinjiang specialities. Small, fatty pieces of lamb crusted with ground cumin, chilli and salt and grilled on a skewer are an example. Dumplings – filled with meat or vegetables – are typical northern China staples, although here lamb dominates instead of pork. It would be a shame not to try a few. What attracts most people to Silk Road is the noodle and stew menu. Our favourite was the ‘medium chicken’, a wonderfully rich star anise-and-chilli-flavoured broth bobbing with pieces of bird on the bone, plus potatoes. When you near the bottom of the serving bowl, and are approaching fullness, your waiter will bring a heaped pile of superb handmade noodles to dump into the aromatic broth and soak up the rest of the rich flavour.

Drinks & Nightlife

You can't stay in Camberwell without dropping into the hermits cave for a swift half. The pub has been a favourite of locals in Camberwell for decades. It has a great traditional London pub atmosphere and an open fire in the winter. The timeout review below sums it up perfectly: This friendly cabin of an Irish pub has been the haunt of Camberwell’s more cultured art students since Leonardo’s time, it seems. Prices are still cheap, the regulars still include old locals who’ve been skulking around in SE5 since Macmillan told them they’d never had it so good, and the decor is still largely made up of pre-war drinks advertising (‘Good Old Murphy’s!’) and contemporary photography. Beers might include selections from the Brodie’s brewery in Leyton; such French ciders as Pays d’Aude and Fermier (each £6) offer an inappropriately continental alternative. Wine is not a selling point, but the prices are fair: all bottles are £12, with glasses at £4.20. A large TV in the saloon bar attracts football fans of the laissez jouer variety; conversation around the timeless wooden interior is the definition of bonhomie.

This new bakery and deli is a great addition to the neighbourhood. The bread is all made on the premises every morning and is very high quality (though not cheap). It often sells out by lunchtime. They also sell delicious home-made ravioli.

Cruson's fruit and veg store is an institution in Camberwell and has been run by the same Greek Cypriot family for decades. It has a wide range of fresh produce and the owner goes to the market at 4.00am every morning, 364 days a year (not christmas day!) to buy the produce.
