Crater Lake is the deepest lake in North America at 1,949 feet deep. It's clear, bright blue water fills the caldera of the collapsed Mt. Mazama which blew up in a giant eruption around 7,700 years ago. Crater Lake National Park is the only National Park located in the State of Oregon, and a must see when in the area. Although Crater Lake is open year round the North entrance closes in late fall, and opens again when the snow melts which can be as late as July. The West (South) entrance is open year round, but may close with heavy snowfall. For updated road information, visit their website or call them at 541-594-3000.

A short, but steep hike leads soakers to 3 natural tubs formed from mineral deposits over hundreds of years. Sitting high above the cold North Umpqua River volcanically heated water ranging from 105-112 degrees makes for a wonderful experience. Clothing is optional at Umpqua Hot Springs, expect non-sexual nudity. You will need $5 for parking, and 2 miles of the road in is gravel with decent size pot holes. There is a restroom in the parking lot. leaving valuables in the car is not recommended. Although open year round, the Forest Service does close a gate late in winter, or in snowy weather. This does mean an additional 1 mile hike each way, but also means less people. The trail in, even when the road is closed is well traveled, and well marked.

***Temporarily closed due to 2020 Archie Creek Fire.*** Susan Creek Falls is found at the end of a 0.8 mile "easy" rated hike. A family favorite, the wide groomed trails are accessible for most looking for a woodland hike. Across the highway there are restrooms, and a day use area including a picnic area, and gazebo bordering the North Umpqua River.

Although Clearwater Falls is only a 30 foot drop, it is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Oregon. The falls are visible from the parking lot, however adventurous people can hike a short steep trail to the top of the falls where you can see and hear the water flowing beneath your feet. Located near milepost 69 on Hwy 138, Clearwater Falls is a great stop on the way to, or from Crater Lake.

Summer swimming

Our favorite local swimming hole is Canton Creek. Just a short 10 mile drive away, Canton Creek is warmer and safer to swim in than the river, and flows year round.
10 or so miles away there is a wonderful creek swimming spot with a few different places to dip in the water, or enjoy yourself in the sun next to it. to get there from Mountain Mama Lodge, head West on 138E Right on Steamboat Rd after less than a mile turn Left onto Canton Creek rd (just after a short bridge) Follow Canton Creekrd for 1.9 miles you'll see a wide spot where people park on the left. This is Canton Creek. If you encounter a curved bridge, you've gone slightly too far.
