This is a great place to shop for local items. This market is open year round. During the winter months only the inside parts of the market is open. There you will find wine, cheese, coffee, lunch items and some fruits and vegetables. You can also buy meat and seafood inside. In addition, when the weather is warmer, you will find local fruits, vegetables and flowers at the outside portion of the market. Close by is the Charleston Bread Company. If you are at the market it is worth hitting up the bakery as well. See the bakery in our guidebook for more info on the bakery.

Great local pizzaria and just a short walk from our Charleston Airbnb. If you want a treat order some of their Sangria. It is dangerously good.

Day Trips
Our favorite places to go for the day. Most are 90 minutes or less from Charleston.
One of the most beautiful lakes in the world. In the summer the water is perfect for wading, floating and swimming. Boating and kayaking are very popular. There is a nice beach near the Battle Run campground. If you are going kayaking or just want to hike along the shore then put in at the Salmon Run enterence. If you paddle or hike to the left (there is a hiking trail) you will find some amazing rocks to relax on or to get into the after from. A one mile paddle along the shore heading to the left out of Salmon Run will bring you to a beautiful bay with a waterfall cascading into the lake. You will think you are in a tropical paradise. This lake is drained each winter. They usually start to drain it in the beginning of September so try to visit before then.

Summersville Lake
One of the most beautiful lakes in the world. In the summer the water is perfect for wading, floating and swimming. Boating and kayaking are very popular. The Elk River is a great place to take the family kayaking. Just about 40 minutes out of Charleston a near the town of Clendenin, you will find a couple of outfits that will set you up for your trip. We recommend Elk River Getaways, (www.elkgetaway.com), as one of the best. Be prepared for relaxation along with a little excitement. Please note that if there have been heavy sustained rains in the last day or two then the river could be high and muddy, which are poor conditions for kayaking on the river. Check with the guide companies to make sure you are coming at a good time.

The highlight of the area is an old railroad track that runs along Buffalo Creek. You can head up the tracks on foot, bicycle, pedal car (that rides on the tracks) or in a rail car pulled by a an engine. Foot and bicycle access is free. There are fees to ride the rails. If you are in a pedal car and get tired they will hook you up to the engine and pull you the rest of the way. This is a railroad grade so it is never over a 2% grade. It is about 3 miles each way. Along the way you will see an old railroad wreck, a nice swim hole (brig a swim suit) and a beautiful waterfall.
If you want to ride the rails make sure to make a reservation as they only head out a few times per day. We don't recommend doing this on a hot/humid day, the forest along the way can get extremely stuffy and steamy. Book this in the spring or fall if possible. If you have to book this in the summer try to go early in the day or as late as possible.

If you are looking for a bigger resort with more technical terrain then go to Snowshoe instead. It's farther away but a much bigger resort.
