Changkat Bukit Bintang has often been likened to London’s Piccadilly Circus and New York City’s Times Square. An avenue on which a large number of KL’s most popular bars and restaurants can be found, it is a trendy place that is great for pub crawling. It is actually located just behind Jalan Bukit Bintang, so it's very easy to get to – particularly if you are staying in the Golden Triangle area. It can get very busy here, especially during the weekends and public holidays. The buildings are unique because they used to be pre-war, colonial shop houses that were refurbished and turned into upmarket pubs and restaurants – most of which serve western food. A short walk away is Jalan Alor, another famous KL city avenue, well known for its hawker stalls and Chinese seafood restaurants. Café Old Market Square (Halal) Café Old Market Square was formerly known as Sin Seng Nam Restaurant which was established in 1928 by a Hainanese immigrant, Choong Yoo Ying and his two brothers. However, after being in the business for 85 years, Sin Seng Nam served their last meal on 28 February 2013. Time had taken its toll on this 100-year old building and the family was not able to maintain it. Fortunately, the coffee shop was bought over by Datuk Ghani Abdullah, a former-lawyer-turned-businessman who loved the original Sin Seng Nam and didn’t want to see this part of historical KL to die into oblivion. He felt that though the building was old but it has not lost its charms. Datuk Ghani restored the coffee shop to its former glory, retained much of its original structure and fittings, and renamed the coffee shop to Café Old Market Square. They serve classic Hainanese (or Hailam) cuisine such as half-boiled eggs, toasted bread with kaya and margarine, hailam chicken rice, mee rojak, mee rebus, and yong tau foo. Complete your meal with a piping hot cup of hailam kopi o or hailam cham. Address : 2, Medan Pasar, City Centre, 50050 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Operating Hours: 7am - 3pm (Monday - Saturday) Tel : +60 16-964 9509

Kim Lian Kee Restaurant (Non-Halal) Restoran Kim Lian Kee bills itself as the birth place of hokien mee in KL. Set at the junction in the centre of Petaling Street (beside Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf), it is a corner lot restaurant that is over 100 years old. Locals say it is one of the best (if not the best) hokkien mee joints in the city. Although Restoran Kim Lian Kee’s menu is fairly extensive and includes typical tai chow (dishes) to be eaten with rice, it is the fat yellow hokkien mee noodles stir-fried and doused in delicious and thick soy sauce gravy that draws in the crowd. Signature Dishes: Hokkien Mee, Cantonese Style Yuen Yong Noodles, Loh Mee, Pork Soup, Stir Fried Kuey Teow with Beef, Moonlight Kuey Teow, Fried Mee Hoon Singapore Style Petaling street Address: 49-51, Jalan Petaling, Kuala Lumpur. Old China Cafe (Non-Halal) Old China Cafe, serves Southeast Asian cuisine that is a combination of Straits Chinese and Malay delicacies (Baba Nonya cuisine). The premises was formerly the guild hall of the Selangor & Federal Territory Laundry Association. The guild was set up at the turn of the century and moved to this part of Chinatown in the 1920s. Many of the architectural details of the building have remained unchanged, even the doors to the kitchen still have wooden latches. This type of pre-war shophouses may not exist much longer. Old China Café tries to maintain a semblance of the Chinese community’s old social life is fading into history. The patina of age contributes to the ambience. This café is to remind us of the hard work carried out by the early Chinese settlers of Kuala Lumpur way back in 1857 when tin was first mined in Ampang. Their labour benefited KL greatly and laid the foundation for a successful commercial centre. Signature Dishes: Nyonya Laksa, Nasi Lemak, Fish Head Curry, Sambal Petai Prawn, Pie Tie, Beef Rendang. Address: 11, Jalan Balai Polis, 50000 Kuala Lumpur. Operating Hours: 11.30am - 10.30pm (Monday - Sunday) Tel: +603-2072 5915 www.oldchina.com.my/cafe.html facebook.com/oldchina.my

Chinatown (Petaling Street), maintains much of its traditional atmosphere, particularly at night when vendors fan out their merchandise along the street. In the 1870s, Yap Ah Loy, a Chinese headman regarded as the founding father of Kuala Lumpur, opened a tapioca mill on Petaling Street. Colloquially known as Chee Cheong Kai, it’s popular with tourists and locals alike.
