Museums and history

These museums are good choices for day trips. When I travel to Cape Breton with my family I find it more economical to buy a Parks Canada annual pass to get us into the National historic sites and National parks. The pass will get your family into the Fortress of Louisbourg, Alexander Graham Bell and Cape breton Highlands National Park. It cost $137 but will cover admission for up to 7 people in your family and it is good for a year. https://www.commandesparcs-parksorders.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/en/parksb2c
The fortress is a great way to spend a day. It is interesting and informative about the history between France, Britain and Canada. Always bring a good pair of walking shoes and a light jacket or hoodie. It can be cooler in Louisbourg

Alexander Graham Bell Museum is a good place to spend a few hours in Baddeck. If you have a National Parks Pass , you can use it for admission to any national park or national museum. If you plan on visiting several museums and going around the trail , I found an annual parks Canada pass is more economical for a family.

Samuel Sparrow, merchant and ship owner possessed the property from 1786 to 1787. The basement has been restored to his original 18th century kitchen with a cooking fireplace, a separate beehive bake-oven and an overhead ceiling plastered between the supporting beams. The museum collects historical artifacts for this area, and research on the Sparrow era in the house, and on his relationship with Governor DesBarres, is continuous. Thomas Jost, a Halifax merchant, bought the property in 1836 and his descendants remained there until 1971. Historical artifacts for the ground floor bedroom, parlour, dining room and store (until 1853) are being collected. In the early 1900s, the roof was raised and the second floor extended to included bedrooms and bath. Here, the museum exhibits collections primarily assembled by prominent Cape Bretoners and other local contributors. Dr. J. Esmonde Cooke’s collection in our Apothecary room preserves an assortment of medicinals and apparatus used in the making of medicine in the early 20th century. The Victorian room has items donated by Dorothy Sutherland, the most notable of these being a shawl that was given to her great grandmother by Queen Victoria. The Jost Family Room has many items donated by the Josts. There is also a family history and a map of the local area from the mid-19th century, which lists the names of many people living in the area at that time.

Overlooking the Bras D’Or Lake, Eileanan Brèagha (pronouced AY-len-an BREE-ah) is Cape Breton’s first and only estate winery. Scottish Gaelic for “beautiful islands,” Eileanan Brèagha was named in homage to the owner’s Gaelic heritage and for the majestic view of the numerous small islands in the Bras d’Or Lake, which can be seen from the property. Situated on a 200-acre former homestead in Marble Mountain, the south-east exposure and moderate climate of the salt water Bras d’Or Lakes allows for a longer growing season, while the marble and limestone in the soil provides a unique terroir that adds a distinct flavor to our collection of wines. Tasting Room open 10am-4pm daily during peak season, or by appointment. 5349 Marble Mountain Road, River Denys

The lighthouse is a nice place to take pictures and look across to the Fortress. As part of the Fortress of Louisbourg reconstruction, this 55 foot tall lighthouse was completed in 1933. It sits on the site of Canada’s first lighthouse and the second in North America. Portions of the original lighthouse foundation, built by the French in 1734, are still visible. The site also features hiking trails that provide stunning views of the area, complete with interpretive panels highlighting the region’s history and surrounding natural wonders.

A dramatic headland cliff overlooks the rugged coast from the end of this level trail. You can enjoy an eagle's view of the Cabot Trail as it winds its way down the mountain and vehicles look like toys. Watch for whales in the Gulf of St. Lawrence from the viewing decks. Moose, bald eagles, bears and numerous boreal birds live in this habitat. Be cautious with children around the cliffs and give moose a wide berth. The headland plants are very fragile and easily damaged by trampling, so stay on the boardwalk. Dogs are not permitted here as they disturb wildlife, especially moose and bear. There are 2 beaches in Port Morien. The sandbar is located at 3104 Hwy 255 (about 10 minutes from the house) and is a great beach for small children at low tide. There is another beach in Port Morien across from the Legion. Parking is on the side of the road and there are quite a few steps to climb to get to the beach.

The beach at nearby Kennington Cove is one of Cape Breton's hidden treasures it offers one of the best sandy beaches on Cape Breton Island. At this historic location New Englanders came ashore in 1745 and the English in 1758, beginning sieges that lead to the fall of Louisbourg. Today, there is only sand, sun and sea. Wolfe’s Landing National Historic Site of Canada is located in Kennington Cove. Contained entirely within the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site of Canada, the site is bounded by a rocky beach to the south, and a rolling landscape of grasses and forest to the north, east and west. It was from this site that, during the Seven Years’ War, British forces launched their successful attack on the French forces at Louisbourg. The site includes the cove with its two modern beaches, numerous trails, and the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada cairn. The waves can be big at this beach and there can be rip tides. The water tends to be a little cooler in the Louisbourg area.
