Slightly more up market and always busy, I would suggest booking a table or going early evening or early lunchtime for a table. Fantastic food, moderately priced, seating inside or out, right on the beach. There is a children’s play area beside the restaurant. Also there is a regular street market that runs often in the evenings so it can be a great night out Tuesday 9am–10:30pm, Wednesday 9am–11pm, Thursday Open 24 hours, Friday 12:15–3:30pm 7:30–10:30pm, Saturday 12:15–3:30pm 7:30–10:30pm, Sunday 12:15–3:30pm 7:30–10:30pm, Monday 9am–10:30pm,

Sightseeing

The city is a popular Catholic pilgrimage site, but it’s beauty alone makes it worth a trip for all. There are a selection of lovely restaurants and stunning views. The city's main monuments occupy the four sides a stunning piazza: the college of the Jesuits; the Palazzo Comunale (formerly the Palazzo Apostolico), designed by Bramante, that houses an art gallery with works of Lorenzo Lotto, Vouet and Annibale Carracci as well as a collection of maiolica, and the Shrine of the Holy House (Santuario della Santa Casa). It also boasts a massive line of walls, designed by the architect ( and military engineer ) Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, which were erected from 1518 and reinforced in the 17th century.

This lovely town is well worth a visit with its beautiful travertino stone buildings and square. It’s especially spectacular if it has rained as it gives the square a reflective quality that’s magnificent, this central Renaissance square, Piazza del Popolo ("Square of the People") often hosts open-air markets. A few blocks away, the Piazza Arringo, or piazza dell'Arengo, was the administrative and religious center of the town, surrounded by the Cathedral, the baptistery, the Bishop's residence, and the Palace of the Commune. According to traditional accounts, Ascoli Piceno once housed some two hundred towers in the Middle Ages: today some fifty can still be seen. Bordering two national parks and mountains on three sides, Ascoli Piceno is a charming town whose Piazza del Popolo is considered to be one of the most beautiful town squares of the BelPaese. However, it could be its Christmas market and ice skating rink which sets it apart from the other local towns. With fake snow scattered around the town, markets with hot chocolate and the fairy lights twinkling and lighting up the bell tower in the centre, there is nowhere else to feel more Christmassy in true Italian style.

Coined as the centre of the Earth, these caves are some of the the largest and most famous underground caverns in Italy. It may be cold but this crystalline wonderland is completely worth it. The factions from the theatrical lighting light up the beams and walkways which lead to displays showcasing the most extravagant stalagmites and stalactites.

Urbino is a steep stone hill town to rival anything in Tuscany or Umbria. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Urbino has retained much of its medieval charm. Its grandiose architecture went up during a golden age under Federico da Montefeltro in the late 1400s. Urbino was the birthplace of painter Raphael, whose first home still stands in via Raffaello. The economical way to see everything else is with the €12 Urbino tourist card (urbinoculturaturismo.it). Take in smaller art sites such as the frescoed Oratorio di San Giovanni, but leave most of your time for one of Italy's best galleries, inside the Palazzo Ducale. Duke Federico's haughty Renaissance palace houses Le Marche's art collection, which includes Piero della Francesca's Flagellation of Christ, works by Raphael and Uccello, and a study decorated with intricate intarsia inlaid wood, some of it designed by Botticelli. You eat well and fairly cheaply in La Trattoria del Leone , where dishes such as tagliolini al pecorino di fossa (pasta with aged ewe's milk cheese) cost from €8. For an earthy whiff of the high life go to nearby Acqualagna, where the tartufo bianco grows. The truffle-hunting season is short: it begins with a fair in November and runs until mid-December.

Le Marche has no less than 18 towns and villages that have been conferred with the orange flag, proclaiming them to be the most beautiful villages in Italy. Grottamare is lovely and well worth a visit/ day trip. Grottamare is just off the Autostrada Adriatica (A14), a scenic motorway that literally hugs Le Marche’s Adriatic coastline. In the old town, perched upon a hill, you can climb up the steep alleyways to the remains of an 11th century fortress. Elsewhere there are 16th century fortified town walls and an ancient lavatoio or public laundry. Piazza Peretti was the centre of the ancient village of Grottamare and this is where most locals assemble in the evening. An especially lovely lookout point is the arched Logge di Piazza Peretti from where you can get a panoramic view of coastal towns and the Adriatic.

Le Marche has no less than 18 towns and villages that have been conferred with the orange flag, proclaiming them to be the most beautiful villages in Italy. My favourites were Montelupone and Grottamare, both within driving distance from Ancona. In fact you don’t even have to choose between them; both the towns can be visited on a day trip from Ancona or Urbino. Montelupone is an ancient walled town, which has a medieval church and palace to its credit. However, the real charm of the place is in just wandering about its tiny alleys, admiring the pretty houses and catching a glimpse of the Le Marche countryside from various lookout points. In its historic centre stands the Palace of the Podestà, with a tall tower crowned with a battlement. The tower also displays the town’s coat of arms and the town clock.
