Food scene

Experience the Mussel Inn: A Golden Bay institution and featured in international guide books. A laid-back “pub’’ with a real local flavour, it brews it own selection of terrific beers, stocks wines and serves a selection of hearty meals. You can’t book and have to take your chances on finding a table, but relax over a drink and one usually becomes available. Also has a good selection of live music, especially during the summer

Whaririki: this is a beautiful and rugged beach with high rising dunes and island rock formations further west past Puponga. Follow the road signs, park, and then it is about a 20-30 minute walk to the beach, but well worth it when you get there. Very exposed, so choose a day when there is little wind. If possible visit at low tide, this is the best time to see seals and get closer to the rock formations. Due to strong currents, this is NOT a swimming beach.

Neighborhoods

Explore Takaka: it’s worth spending an hour or two poking around in the galleries and quirky shops in Takaka; for food, in addition to the supermarket, there is a good organic shop and an excellent specialist bread bakery next to the Village Picture Theatre -- which is well worth a visit. If most experiences are ‘different’ in Golden Bay, so is a trip to the movies! This is a lovely and quirky little movie theatre with a mix of comfy chairs, sofas and beanbags. Local Arts Trail: there are numerous artists and galleries throughout Golden Bay and a number of good ones in the Parapara vicinity. Rinopai, Valley Road, does exquisite, fine jewellery and beautiful painting. Also, in Parapara Tim Jessup (Lookout Road) does good solid pottery at very reasonable prices. More specialised glazes and colourful bowls and dishes can be found at Anatoth up Parapara Valley Road (across the main highway) and at Paul Winspear in Tukerua Road. Estuary Arts, towards Milnethorpe on the way to Collingwood, produces a range of ceramics, glass art and visual art. There are some good galleries in Takaka along the main street
