Sightseeing and Hiking

I enjoy hiking and running, and taking photos. These are a few of my favorites spots in Big Bear.
Great place for a nice view of the sunset. Also a good spot for a picnic. The water ramp you can walk out to the center of the lake. This is a wonderful area, beautiful views of mountains and lake, nice walking paths, covered seating areas, benches. Great place to visit. The landscape of the mountains towering the lake in the middle looks great.

Great out and back trail day hike. Beautiful trail, pretty well kept, moderately trafficked with amazing views. Also dog friendly. It's a gradual incline, but nothing too brutal. It does however get more challenging if you continue right, onto the Pacific Crest Trail (Cougar Crest Trail ends at PCT). After about .3 miles you will meet a service road, take it right (there is a trail marker). It is a very steep climb up to the top. Bertha Peak gives you some pretty incredible 360 degree views of the region. This is a 5-6 miles round trip moderate hike with some great views of the lake from the north side. The climb is gradual most of the way. Once you reach the junction, you can go on the pacific crest trail (2600 miles fr Mexico to Canada ) that goes to Mexico (turn right) or Canada (turn left).Meet hikers that are doing the Mexico to Canada hike

Great hiking trail! The trail is crowded during the spring and summer time with hikers and backpackers making their way through Big Bear and onwards. The hike gives hikers great views of the Big Bear Lake from above.

This is about as easy as it gets, there’s no dirt involved either. The fully paved Alpine Pedal Path extends 2.5 miles one way on the North Shore from Stanfield Cutoff to the Solar Observatory (or vice versa). A diversion about halfway through will also take you to the Cougar Crest trail head and the Big Bear Discovery Center. You have options here!

the 'star' of this show.. Big Bear Lake... During summer it is enjoyed by fishermen, kayakers, boat enthusiast, seeking to escape the noise and stress of urban life below. Six years of drought has taken its toll on the waterfront, and Big Bear Lake has lost more than half of its water volume since 2011

The Eye of God is a quartz dome. It is a megalith which is a sacred tribal landmark for the Serrano people who lived in the region 2,000 years ago. The Serranos worshipped the dome, which they referred to as the eye of their creator Kruktat (Kokitach). Legend says God was watching to make sure the Indians treated one another well. The Eye of God Trail is a 1.8-mile roundtrip hike to Eye of God, which has its trailhead on Burns Canyon Road.[8] The Eye of God is still an impressive site, it is located near the 156-acre Baldwin Lake Ecological Preserve, that includes a unique pebble plain plant community, as well as a vernal wet meadow habitat, significant as a wintering site for bald eagles.

Food scene

I am a 'foodie' at heart (did my well stock kitchen gave me away?!?!). I like good food. I like unique flavors. Once I find a place I like, I return to it often. Many of these places are "locals" best kept secret. Some don't say much from the outside (shacks, counter eating, remote locations), but boy oh boy is the food good... that is why they are listed here. They are not listed in any particular order, but the ones that are my #1 Favorite are clearly marked. Most of them have websites with menu, and you can also Google reviews.
This is not only a good place to go for breakfast, but it is also a MUST for tourists. The place is small, 10 tables and counter seating for 4-5, with very unique decor. The Kitchen is very small but the food is awesome. Portions are HUGE, so you can share. Staff is super friendly, Cook is a riot... when he is done with breakfast, if he is not tired, they serve lunch! This is a very tiny, but popular place, so get there early because there are always loooong lines for seating! Tuesday is "locals day", no long lines! MY PERSONAL FAVORITES: “THE MESS” and"Fat Pat"…

Just look for the place that looks like it fell out of a fairy tale book! Sweet and savory pies, baked daily, and they sell out fast, by 2:00pm, they are sold out. Pies are sold by the slice or whole. Menu changes weekly, they only make seasonal pies with seasonal ingredients.
The only place in the village with live bands on the weekends and a kitchen that stays open until midnight! Fabulous food, 6 pool tables, foosball, dart boars, full bar with craft beers, 16 beer taps, 20 TV's featuring all college and pro games (NFL package), amazing friendly staff. MY PERSONAL FAVORITES: Fish Tacos, Pepper crusted Ahi and Italian Mozzarella bites with olives and BEER

Not sure why it shows up as BIG BEAR LOCAL, but this review is for TROPICALI, and they are located in the Village. This place is fun, and I mean, FUN... the guys working the counter appear to be stuck in a 1970's Beavis and Butthead Beach Movie! If you want to feel like you are in Hawaii (ambiance, music and food), this is the place to go. This place serves Hawaiian food, poke bowls and sushi. Very VERY good quality of food... but a bit pricey. I wish the sizes would be a bit larger, but the ambiance and food makes up for it. They have outdoor seating in a 'beach' area, and inside it totally rad, with retro 70's Hawaiian decor.

Amazing!! I lived in Italy, and in my opinion, this is best Italian restaurant I've been to outside of Italy, and it happens to be in the Village! The quality of the food is excelled, the owner and staff are very friendly and such a welcoming ambiance. My favorite: the Bruschetta, any Pasta, the cannoli, and the Butterfly Lemonade! If you are looking for fine dining, exceptional service and quality ingredients, this is the place to go.

Shopping

Big Bear is a small town, we don't have many shops. We have two supermarkets, a K-Mart and a Dollar Tree... (I do a lot of online shopping!). There are lots of gift shops and small boutiques in the Village. We have weekend crowds that come up for Thrift Stores and Vintage shop. Between March-September we have the Farmer's Market.
They have a large beer, wine and liquor section. Ready to Take home food, soups and salads. Organic Fruits and Vegetables. Firewood... and a Starbucks

As the name suggests people bring their own boats and jet skies and use this launch area to get in the water. I highly recommend this place for picnicking, swimming and water sport.

Plan Ahead and Prepare for Winter Driving

THESE ARE RECOMMENDATIONS... do your OWN research! Carry snow chains or cables. Be prepared for extreme weather. If you need to put on chains, pull off to the side of the road and out of the way of oncoming traffic. Ice is slippery and oncoming cars can slide, so you want to be in a protected area for chain installation. If you are taking it slow on the roads, find a spot to pull over and let other cars pass. Download the APP for CalTrans Quick Maps for road condition updates. (Hwy. 330, Hwy 18, and Hwy 38) Fully charge cell phones prior to heading up or down the mountain.

Leave No Trace Behind

Pack it in, pack it out. If you brought it up to Big Bear, use it, and take it back home with you, don't throw in streets. Dispose of waste properly: Don't leave broken plastic sleds and snow toys, dirty diapers, empty containers on the side of the road. Take them to the City Dump, or take them home with you. Leave what you find and respect wildlife. Don't pick flowers, remove rocks, or touch/chase wildlife. If humans touch wildlife, they get imprinted and won't recognize their own species afterwards. Keep away from wild animals!
