This is one of my favorite college coffee shops in Boone. It was originally a tractor/Ford dealership back in the '50s and now has been converted to a coffeeshop/study lounge/awesome hangout spot with fresh pastries and good coffee.

Sunrise Grill is my favorite breakfast spot in Boone. They feature a lot of made from scratch and also local options in their menu, and all the food is delicious. From Friday-Sunday, expect to wait a good 30 minutes for a table if you don't get their early enough. What is nice as well is that the Silver route, which picks up right by the Rocco, will take you directly to Sunrise Grill along its route. Just to note, the Silver route does not run on weekends and the Red Route picks up instead on weekends.

Dan'l Boone Inn is a family-style restaurant that serves delicious southern comfort food. It is a historic place, having been around since the early 1900s and is not only a fantastic place to eat but a great history lesson.

Believe it or not, in Boone we have an INCREDIBLE Indian restaurant called Mint. It is a little pricey but worth every penny. The food is incredible and the service is great as well. Highly recommend going to Mint if you at all like Indian cuisine.

I believe The Cardinal has the best burgers in Boone. They have a funky selection of burgers with a special wild game selection that changes every week or so. It also has a bar but is still great for families.

Parks & Nature

BFT, or Boone Fork Trail, is a five mile loop on the Blue Ridge Parkway that features stunning trails through forests, waterfalls and rivers and is a blast to trek through. It will take on average 2-4 hours to complete depending on your pace.

Howard's Knob is probably the best overlook to see all of Boone. It is a super easy little walk over to the scenic overlook and it has a grassy area up-top with picnic tables and bathrooms. It is a great place to take in all of Boone from a bird's eye view.

Sim's Creek hike is one of my other favorite hiking spots on the parkway. On one part of the trail it is very steep uphill/downhill depending on which end of the loop you start. It will take you through a pasture and then through beautiful interconnecting streams and little waterfalls. You could say this is a water hike, so wear proper footwear. This isn't a super difficult hike either, but the worst part is the uphill/downhill which is very steep.

Appalachian State's Turchin Center For the Visual Arts is a great place to go to see everything from local art to famous featured pieces. It is right on the edge of App State's campus on King Street.

Drinks & Nightlife

The local is a great place to hang out and have a brew. They have great outdoor seating and also a great menu as well. Thursday nights is when they have their specials on drinks! The local is definitely a favorite among college students but is also great for families and groups.

Essentials

Boone Drug has all your essential needs, everything from shampoo to cough medicine. They also have a really good old-fashioned Soda Bar where they serve American cuisine that is pretty fairly priced. If you can't find what you need here, just head over to Walmart.

Getting Around

The AppalCart is the university public transit system which is free because student's pay for it through their tuition. I recommend downloading the "NextBus" app which will tell you the routes schedules for all the bus routes. The Bus route nearest to Rocco is Silver, which runs M-F until 5:30. After 5:30 during weekdays then the "Red to ApplaCart" route will stop by the house. Silver does not run on weekends, but Red Route does. There is also the POP-105 Route that runs up and down 421, which is the main road near Rocco.

The "Beeper System" is essentially an illegal taxi system that 99% of students at App State use to get around. This is done through a very large Facebook group called, "Boone Student Beeper." On there, students who are "beeping" will post their phone number and tell everyone they are beeping. If you need a ride, text/call that person and see if they are available. Standard rates for this are $2 per head for groups (2 or more) and $3+ for singles. **This is a completely unregulated system and be careful and smart if you are unfamiliar with using it. It works great for a lot of the student population, but if this isn't your cup of tea then you might want to get an Uber (if you can find one).
