Please read our “exhaustive book of sips and eats,” it's pretty extensive, but if you don't have a lot of time, here are the things you should do:
L & J is the best Mexican food in town, bar none. You will likely wait. You probably won't find a seat at the bar while you wait. It will still be worth it.
There are arguments for best gordita's (Little Diner, technically in Canutillo), best tamales (Lupita's, take out no dine in), best chile rellenos (Chopes in La Mesa), all of which are the subject of debate. But if you like all kinds of Mexican food, you cannot beat L & J. We love the huevos rancheros for breakfast, and the Mexican plate for lunch. It's plenty for two people and everyone gets what they want.
