A genuine ‘greasy spoon’ café with an art deco interior and friendly Italian service. Its cosy enough to meet fellow diners, and serves an excellent ‘full English’ breakfast for around £10.

This great little cafe-style eaterie at the end of our road in a converted warehouse was designed by Terence Conran. Its stylish, but simple, and offers modestly-priced British food using seasonal artisanal local produce. Expect trendy smashed avocado with your English breakfast, sausage & mash and a daily pie to salads and sandwiches, using bread baked on the premises.

Although Brick Lane is known for its Indian curry houses, this Indian restaurant is the one of choice for those in the know. It doesn't take table reservations so you need to dine early to avoid the queues, but it is definitely worth it, and my guest gave it rave reviews.

If you want to try something exotic, how about Peruvian food washed down with a couple of pisco sours? The food and drinks are equally delicious in this place, and if you time a visit with happy hour (5-7) and order from the express menu, it doesn't have to be expensive.

Ottolenghi has recently arrived in Shoreditch. When you mention this name in London, everyone goes aaah. Everything by this celebrity chef is mouthwatering, from the salads to the cakes. You can book a table in this deli-style restaurant on opentable.co.uk and it offers a take away menu too.

Pubs and bars for craft beer in Shoreditch

Shoreditch is a good place for craft beer, from the casual sports bars to cosy, traditional English pubs.
This gastro pub in the backstreets is one of our favourites. It has an impressive, rotating selection of craft beer, from new-wave IPAs to comforting bitters and black stouts, and rare Belgian brews from independent breweries. With chic wooden trimmings it looks like a hipster hangout, but is frequented by locals, and quiet on week day nights so you can find a place to sit. Its also ok for a light bite, with meat and cheese platters, and traditional specialities such as pork pie and scotch eggs.

This pub has history…it was once frequented by East End gangsters Ronnie and Reggie Kray (and run by their mum). It is now a friendly local, with traditional wooden panelling and cream walls (and a fireplace), which stocks around 50 bottled beers and 10 draughts, both local and international. It also serves decent British pub food (try the Black Pudding Scotch Egg) until 10pm. We like to go on a weeknight, or early evening, when it has a lively atmosphere, but you can get a seat (it is packed at weekends).

You can sip the world famous Scottish brewery's craft beers, on diner-style leather banquettes surrounded by antique tiles at this bar, within staggering distance of the apartment. It is a good place to go if there's a match on, and does bar food like burgers, hot dogs and pizza.
