If here for Easter, Thanksgiving or Christmas, Little America has a fantastic Champagne brunch buffet - all you wish to eat of high-end, quality food. Check out their website to see the menu. For larger groups they take reservations and you may get your own dining room. Otherwise, it is a first-come, first serve so I suggest arriving no later than 10 am to avoid a long wait - though you get free coffee and hot chocolate while you wait. Some local Flagstaff families make this a holiday family tradition. So nice not to have to cook.

Wild West-style space staging musical revues performed by waiters & serving classic steakhouse fare within the Black Bart RV Park. A little pricey, but the food has excellent reviews. A casual atmosphere, the restaurant is mostly a big open room with a stage at one side, though the entertainment spills into the entire room throughout the night. A genuine wood fireplace near the entrance welcomes you in. Don't be put off by it being in an RV park, as the restaurant is separate. Reservations are a good idea as it is popular.

An amazing natural wonder only 37 miles east of Flagstaff where 50,000 years ago a 160-foot wide iron and nickel meteor made impact leaving a crater almost 3/4 a mile in diameter. At first, it was thought to be volcanic because it is so big. The Meteor Crater Visitor Center on the north rim has interactive exhibits and displays about meteorites and asteroids, space, the solar system, and comets. It features the American Astronaut Wall of Fame and has artifacts on display including an Apollo boilerplate command module (BP-29), a 1,406-pound meteorite found in the area, and meteorite specimens from Meteor Crater that can be touched. This is where the ending of the movie "Starman" was filmed.

A 230 sq mile natural wonder located one hour and 45 minutes from Flagstaff, it’s known for its fossils, especially beautiful ones of fallen trees that lived in the Late Triassic Period about 225 million years ago. It has 7 maintained hiking trails from less than 0.5 miles to nearly 3 miles. The sediments containing the fossil logs are part of the widespread and colorful Chinle Formation, from which the Painted Desert gets its name. Beginning about 60 million years ago, the Colorado Plateau, of which the park is part, was pushed upward by tectonic forces and exposed to increased erosion. Be sure to visit the large gift shop nearby to take home a piece of polished petrified wood.

Lowell Observatory is an astronomical observatory established in 1894 placing it among the oldest observatories in the United States. It’s been a national landmark since 1965 and is best known for being the observatory where Pluto was discovered in 1930. Research is still conducted there today. On a clear day you can view the sun through a special telescope, take tours about the observatory and the discovery of Pluto, visit the Putnam Collection with astronomy equipment, maps and historic exhibits, and in the evening there are special programs such as a constellation tour and evening telescope viewing. Built in 1904 for two Riordan families, it’s an impressive reminder of gracious living in a small, territorial logging town and has excellent examples of original Stickley furniture from the era. The historic building is an Arizona treasure, an example of Arts and Crafts style architecture featuring a rustic exterior of log-slab siding, volcanic stone arches, and hand-split wooden shingles. The expansive home has forty rooms, over 13,000 square-feet of living area, and servants' quarters. Only a 45-minute drive from here through Oak Creek Canyon. It's a desert town surrounded by red-rock buttes, steep canyon walls, and pine forests with the main attraction being an array of red sandstone formations. They appear to glow brilliant orange and red when illuminated by the rising or setting sun. Noted for its mild climate and vibrant arts community, Uptown Sedona is dense with New Age shops, spas and art galleries. On the town’s outskirts are numerous trails in Red Rock State Park, which offers bird-watching, hiking, biking, and picnicking spots. Tip: When selecting a place to eat while visiting Sedona during the daytime, be sure to pick a place with a great view.

Only 30 minutes from Flagstaff, it’s a window into the Wild West and Historic Route 66. The Historic Downtown District covers 6 sq. blocks boasting Americana-style shops and restaurants dating back to the early 1900s. It's home to the Route 66 Zipline and Pete's Route 66 Gas Station Museum featuring highway memorabilia - so it’s a must-stop for Route 66 enthusiasts. Last Fourth of July (2017), Williams had its first Independence Day fireworks celebration in 17 years which my then guests from Indiana truly enjoyed, along with the Wild West show, parade, and barbeque.

Oak Creek Canyon Scenic Drive beginning just outside of Flagstaff on Hwy 89A is a winding, 25 mph stunning drive that passengers love – but the driver may not. The 14-mile journey starts at 7000 ft within Ponderosa Pines and descends into the diverse Oak Creek ecosystem that provides a beautiful fall season show of colors. During mid to late summer monsoon season, waterfalls may be visible along the way. The elevation drops 4000 ft, arriving at the incredible red rock scenery of Sedona. Along the 45-minute drive prior to reaching the town of Sedona, you’ll pass Slide Rock State Park, Midgley Bridge, and many hiking trails. It's a drive well worth making.

The obstacles include bridges, hanging nets, rope swings, scrambling walls, and much more. There are several large obstacle courses at different skill levels to chose from; some are appropriate for adults and some for children. Safety harnesses are always used and participants are given training sessions that last about 30 minutes before starting with the easiest obstacle course in order to become familiar with the setting. A 215-acre park and 2-mile hiking loop trail with various exercise stations along the way including a climbing rope. It has picnic tables, scenic views of the San Francisco Peaks, and often deer can be spotted. It’s open 24 hours a day and has restroom facilities. The 2-mile loop trail connects to many other trails in the Flagstaff Urban Trail System. During Spring and Summer, beautiful wildflowers carpet the wide-open areas of native grassland surrounded by Ponderosa Pines. Prior to becoming a city park, it was a private wildlife park with buffalo – as evidenced by the buffalo statue at the entrance. Many locals come here to walk their leashed dogs, hike, bike, and jog.

The largest natural lake in Arizona, it's surrounded by Ponderosa Pines. Water level varies depending on annual rainfall and during drought years it can be completely dry. Wet or not, hiking trails lead to panoramic overlooks to view wildlife and birds across the lake's landscape. The name of the lake commemorates Mormon settlers who arrived in 1878 to found a dairy. Mormon Lake Lodge on the lake's western shore has rentals for recreational equipment, a famous cowboy steakhouse, and a fishing pond. Camping is available at nearby Dairy Springs Campground and Double Springs Campground May 1st to Sept. with 43 single units, tables, fire rings, cooking grills, water and vault toilets.

Bring your swimsuit for family fun. But please be careful not to drink the water - lots of people use this each year. There’s a nice video on YouTube called “A Visit to Slide Rock Park” that shows what it’s like plus there are other videos. Arrive earlier rather than later because the parking lot will fill up - maybe bring along a picnic lunch. The limited parking has a benefit as it also limits the number of people so it can’t get super crowded. Bring shoes to wear while in the water since it’s rocky.

An ancient Sinagua (Sin ah’ wa) village with 60-70 rooms constructed of compacted stones inhabited by 200-300 people from about A.D. 1070 to 1275. The site is unique by making archaeology and the study of ancient peoples accessible to the public as an active archeological site. Since 1978, professional archaeologists have supervised members of the public in excavations, archaeological research techniques, and artifact analysis through a variety of public and school programs. A 250-yard path leads from the parking lot to and around the ruins. It's thought to have been part of a major trading system by discoveries of trade items such as macaw skeletons from Mexico and jewelry from coastal CA.

It’s one of the most iconic and beautiful places to visit in the Southwest. You must be booked into a tour to enter the canyon on Navajo land and during Summer peak tourist season tours book well in advance. In the Navajo language, Upper Antelope Canyon is called Tsé bighánílíní which means "the place where water moves through rocks." Lower Antelope Canyon is called Hazdistazí, meaning "spiral rock arches", and is a more difficult hike. During monsoon season, thunderstorms pour water through the multiple slot canyons and have transformed the red sandstone into magnificent formations. It attracts photographers and sightseers from around the World.

These popular and beautiful falls are on Havasupai Native American land taking a moderate 10 miles each way (20 miles RT), you must stay overnight, and have permits. Booking a group tour is perhaps the best, safest way to see the falls as all will be taken care of. Bring a camera. The trail is steep for the first 1.5 miles from the trailhead, then mostly level hiking with a slightly downhill slant. It's rocky and sandy, and pack mules going up and down the canyon are important to avoid. There’s no water for the first 6 miles and daytime temperatures from May through Sept. are often above 105 degrees F in the shade. July through Sept. is monsoon season so there is a danger of flash floods.

The trailhead to this 3/4 mile hike each way is located just outside of Page, AZ and takes about 15 minutes each way for an average walker, & no fee. As the name implies, it's an iconic horseshoe-shaped rock formation surrounded by the Colorado River seen from the overlook above a steep cliff (be careful!) - it's one of the most spectacular views on the Colorado River and is amazing at sunrise or sunset. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and expect to walk over sandy and rocky areas. The parking lot is small so most people park along the highway.

The highest point in AZ at 12,633 ft and one of the most scenic viewpoints in the San Francisco Peaks, which are considered sacred by local Native Americans. On clear days hikers can see the Grand Canyon from the summit with wildflowers along the way. The 9.2 mile total up and back alpine forest trail is strenuous & rocky with over 3,000 ft elevation gain. Only recommended for experienced hikers – do not hike alone or during winter since it’s easy to lose the trail and get lost. Weather can suddenly become violent with storms that can bring strong winds (50-60 mph), heavy rain, lightning, and snow. Turn around & get to a lower elevation if thunderstorms. Expect the hike to take 8-10 hours.

0.75 mile-long lava tube cave (one-way) formed 700,000 years ago by molten rock erupting from a volcanic vent in nearby Hart Prairie. It’s the longest known lava cave in AZ. The top, sides, & bottom of the flow cooled & solidified first, then the insides continued to flow emptying out the present cave. The best time to visit is in Summer, though it’s open year-around. In winter the forest roads leading there are closed so visitors need to snowshoe or cross-country ski in. Dress warm & in sturdy shoes. The rocks are sharp and slippery, inside is a cool 42°. Bring 2 or 3 sources of light in case one happens to fail. Camping is allowed but at least one mile from the cave entrance.

30 miles Northeast of Flagstaff, they are also known as the Chocolate Falls due to their often muddy appearance, At 185 feet (56 meters) they are taller than Niagara Falls. The best time to view them is March or April unless it’s been a dry winter in which case it will not be flowing. Known in the Southwest for its many tiers of water, wide stance, and beautiful rainbows created by the impact and spray, the Grand Falls are incredible phenomena. Located on the Navajo Nation in the Painted Desert, it dumps snowmelt or monsoon rain into the Little Colorado River below. A Navajo Nation hiking permit is required to visit and you'll need a four-wheel drive vehicle and Navajo guide.

Flagstaff got its name when lumberjacks celebrating the 4th of July in 1876 nailed a U.S. flag to the top of a tall Ponderosa Pine and called the unnamed settlement Flagstaff. The forest covers 1.856-million acres in N.AZ and is one of the most diverse National Forests in the country with landscapes ranging from the red rocks of Sedona to Ponderosa pine forests, from southwestern desert to alpine tundra. It’s mostly a pine-covered plateau cut by deep canyons and bordered on the south by the spectacular Mogollon Rim, a 1,000-ft cliff running for miles across central AZ and includes the San Francisco Peaks, with Humphreys Peak the highest mountain in AZ at 12,633 ft.

Offers a scenic view of the San Francisco Peaks and dry camping in the cool aspen trees that surround Lockett Meadow. It’s wonderful for those who cherish a real mountain camping experience and love to hike wilderness trails. You may catch a glimpse of the natural residents such as porcupine or elk and hear the song of a hermit thrush that sings his best here. Black bears have been known to stroll right through groups of picnickers. There are restroom facilities but no water, and camping sites are a first-come, first-served basis with 17 single unit sites, fire rings, and picnic tables.

Begins in Lockett Meadow ringed with aspen stands and the majestic San Francisco Peaks. The trail leads into the mountain’s quiet Inner Basin, winding through a shady forest to join the Waterline Trail briefly before following a service road into the mountain's Inner Basin, connecting to the Weatherford Trail on the far side. It’s moderate to strenuous with a steady gain of 600 ft in elevation per mile at high elevation. Spring and summer wildflowers add a sprinkling of blue, red and yellow to the peaceful scene. Fall turns the extensive stands of aspen covering the steep slopes of the caldera to solid gold.

A moderate to strenuous hike with a steady, gradual climb, it’s the “back way” to Humphrey’s Peak – ending when it intersects with Humphreys Trail which continues up to the top of Mt. Humphrey – the highest mountain in Arizona at 12,643 feet. The winding mountain trail is the remains of an old road that once took Model T Fords to the top of the San Francisco Peaks. Views stretch to Oak Creek Canyon and the Verde Valley over fifty miles away. Trailside vegetation changes as you get higher from ponderosa pine to alpine species such as limber pine, cork bark fir, and bristlecone pine. Caution: Black bear have been sighted here. and Elk gather in the fall during mating season.

Humphreys Peak B-24 Wreckage: On the west face of Mt Humphreys at 11,300 feet are the remains of a WWII crash site where eight U.S. servicemen tragically lost their lives in the crash of their B-24 bomber during a routine night training mission at 3:30 am on Sept 15, 1944 on a dark, moonless, cloudy night. It can be reached via Humphreys Trail by adventurous hikers yearning to honor these fallen soldiers by finding this unique and hidden memorial to a military tragedy. Broken up during the crash on the heavily volcanic boulder-laden area, still to be found are engine parts, structural debris, and an almost entirely intact wing on which a memorial plaque has been placed.

Easy 3-mile hike in the Coconino National Forest, 25 miles NW of Flagstaff. The trail is well-marked, and though uphill much of the way there is fine for children. There's a short, sturdy ladder near the end of the trail at the mountain to get up a 6-ft rise. Red Mtn is a volcanic cinder cone rising 1,000 ft formed 740,000 years ago. It has an unusual "U" shape, lacking the symmetrical shape of most cinder cones, and a large natural amphitheater cuts into the cone's NE flank. Situated in a box canyon, erosional pillars called "hoodoos" decorate the amphitheater, and many dark mineral crystals erode out of its walls. Trees in the natural amphitheater provide some shade. Bring water.

Our most visible local site is a volcanic mountain range on the north side within the Coconino National Forest. Called simply “The Peaks” by locals, it is the remains of an eroded stratovolcano that 200,000 yrs ago erupted laterally, and along with glacial erosion turned the once 16,000 ft peak into 6 peaks. Humphreys Peak is the highest summit in the range and the highest point in the state at 12,633 ft, and on its western slope is Snowbowl – our local ski resort. The other five are Agassiz Peak, Fremont Peak, Aubineau Peak, Rees Peak, and Doyle Peak. The Peaks have considerable religious significance to thirteen local Native American tribes.

This strenuous 4.7-mile hike starts off leading up a staircase of petrified lava along part of Fatman’s Loop trail, ending at Mount Elden’s summit. You’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Flagstaff and the surrounding area, plus close-up views of the mountain's geology. The lower part passes through a mixed pinyon-juniper woodland and ponderosa pine forest changing to mixed conifers higher up. An especially interesting tree is the Alligator Juniper. Near the top is an area devastated by a huge wildfire in 1977 and you’ll see how nature recovers, with aspen trees growing where pines once were. Elden Lookout Trail connects to Oldham Trail at the top making an extended hike possible.

One of the best trails in AZ and among the top 10 in the U.S in Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona where you can enjoy views of the creek, magnificent red rock vistas, keep out of the hot sun due to many shady areas, see fall foliage on maples and oaks, and snow in winter. It’s an easy, 6-mile round-trip day hike with a few areas of short uphill stepping stones, 13 stream crossings on stepping stones and logs, and at the end is a pool of water surrounded by cliffs. It is possible to travel another 11 miles upstream but requires boulder hopping, wading and even some swimming - he extended hike is an overnight adventure so bring camping equipment.
