Favorite Hikes

Take the bus or drive here. I love this trail, out by the Glacier. It's an easy, flat mile on a wide trail dotted with waterfalls. It was the site of a powerline taking hydro power from Nugget Creek to the Treadwell mine on Douglas more than 100 years ago- an engineering feat! For more of a hike, climb the stairs just past the old powerhouse to the Trail of Time, then continue to the East Glacier loop (which also connects to Nugget Creek trails).

Lovely local trail. If on foot, turn left and walk 0.3 mile uphill to the Flume. Walk to the very end of Highland and through the small walkway ("shortest trail in Juneau") to the base of Evergreen. Continue up Evergreen. When it ends, follow the wide dirt road to the right. It leads back around to the left, and ends at a wooden walkway (The Flume) . Stay on the Flume until it ends, about another 1/3 mile, level, until it ends on Basin Road. From Basin Road, turn left and walk to Perseverance Trailhead. Walking or running the loop from the house to the Flume, Basin Road, and Perseverance, is 3 miles. If you instead go up Perseverance to the first lookout, that's four miles. The trailhead for Mt Roberts Trail is also on Basin Road near the end of the Flume. Check trailbooks in the apartment or ask your hosts for more details.

We have tram passes! There is a trail up Mt Roberts, but the tram will get you up to treeline in no time. Then you can continue up to Gold Ridge, with views of the surrounding islands, water, and ice fields. Bring hiking poles! Lots of shorter trails in the alpine meadows if you're not up for the Ridge hike, too.

Sandy Beach and the Treadwell Mine trails are here. It's a lovely spot - the sand is from old mine tailings- with a playground, wooded trails, picnic shelters, and a long beach. You can find old pottery and from the mine along the beach, and the wooded trails are dotted with ruins and explanatory signs.

Right above our house, on the slopes of Mt Juneau, are some avalanche mitigation trails. The whole loop is less than a mile. Before you go, be aware of avalanche risk. Especially in late winter and early spring. Check this page before you go for any current advisories: https://juneau.org/emergency/current-advisory Turn right from your driveway. Walk downhill past two houses, make another right on Troy. When that street dead-ends keep walking along the trail. You'll pass one Trail going up the hill on your right but keep going straight, continuing until you come to a section of woods with a trail leading uphill. Kids have made that section into a mountain bike track. And kind of a playground. There is a rope swing and a tree you can walk through. Feel free to explore that area as you climb to the avalanche mitigation trail at the top. When you get to the wide dirt trail, turn left (north) and walk slightly uphill to the end by a small pool. Look uphill to see the scars of an avalanche last spring. Then turn around and stay on that wide dirt road, heading south. You'll see houses in front of you. There are waterfalls coming down the mountain to your left. In spring and fall you can see mountain goats on the slopes up there. If you look to your right, you can see the eagle tree. They have a chick or two each spring and raise them here, then fly away. From that top section where you can see the eagle tree you can just continue on, and you'll come out at the top of Judy Lane, which becomes Coleman. Turn right when Coleman intersects with Highland and come back down the hill to your place. The loop takes about 20 min or so to complete it, not counting exploration. Probably goes without saying, but we do have bears nearby in our neighborhood, on trails, streets, and backyards. If you're in thick brush, clap, sing or talk to yourself (or the bears).

A short walk from our place. Not sure when tours will resume post-pandemic, but just getting a view of the outside is nice. The marble columns out front are crafted from marble from Prince of Wales Island in southern Southeast AK (near Ketchikan).

One night each December, the governor's mansion is open for cookies, cocoa, and cider. Not sure when that will start back up in covid era but it sure was fun. A walk around the outside of the mansion is nice too. Be sure to view the totem our front! This is a 10-ish minute walk from our place.

On the Water

This tip comes from our past guests who have raved about Jayleen's. Small groups, personal service (guests have been picked up and dropped off in our driveway), and exceptional experiences make Jayleen's special. Look for the brochures and book on the bookshelf! And they did create such a beautiful and informative book about whales. (We don't get kickbacks or any other benefit if you choose them, just so you know.)

交通アクセス

The bus stop is two blocks away, just down the hill.

Go to Capital Transit's trip planner at https://juneaucapitaltransit.org/ Unfortunately the bus doesn't go directly to the ferry terminal or the glacier. Glacier- The bus will drop you 2 miles from the visitor's center. You can follow a broad sidewalk along the road, or take the waterfall-dotted Powerline Trail (https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/tongass/recarea/?recid=78769) to get there. Ferry Terminal- the closest stop is about 1.6 miles from the terminal, in Auke Bay. Several local eateries are nearby- Forbidden Peak Brewery, The Hot Bite, Squires, and Waffle Co

Being neighborly in Bear Country

We are living in bear country here, we have several in the neighborhood. Please check our House Rules for special considerations for trash. We can't store trash outside, even in the bear-resistant trash can. For your outdoor excursions, here are some helpful tips: http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/?adfg=livingwithbears.bearcountry We have bear spray available for you. Here is a short video to watch before using it: https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/2018/05/04/got-bear-spray-heres-how-to-make-sure-you-use-it-right/ Do be careful, it is easier than you'd think to end up on the wrong end of the spray!
