It is said that Ferragudo is not a place to be visited, but a place to be lived. Lit by the evening colours, this quiet village rises from the banks of the Arade River, offering, at first sight, the feeling of an ideal place for relaxation. The location and the nature of its surroundings make it an excellent starting point for discovering a region reknowned for its beauty. Ferragudo has not grown much since the Sixteenth Century, and for this reason it has kept the simplicity of its whitewashed houses and winding roads, inspired by the Moors. The old Fifteenth Century walls and the watchtower no longer exist, but the old Fort of São João, built in the Seventeenth Century and rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755, is in good condition, although it ceased to be used as a defense bastion. From that time, it has been used for various purposes, namely as a literary salon. We also recommend that you visit the church of Our Lady of Conception (Nossa Senhora da Conceição), which was built in 1320 and stands atop a hill, visible from the road which takes you to the village as well as from the sand-bar of the Arade River. Although characteristically a fishing economy, Ferragudo also has rural space, where the cultivation still feeds many families. As someone once said, Ferragudo is not just a brush-stroke on a painting but rather an obligatory reference on the construction plan of the politico-social history of the Algarve.
