It is famous for a wife bravely saving her husband during the Civil War, by drugging the Roundhead soldiers looking for him. As well as having been "Wolf Hall" in the TV series.

Also famous for having inspired Nancy Mitford's semi-autobiographical novels Love in a Cold Climate and The Pursuit of Love when she lived at Asthall Manor as a young woman. The Mitford family lived here from 1919-1926 before moving to Swinbrook down the road, where she was buried.
