In the alley behind Shepherd’s Bush Market are large, witty painted signs, ‘Let’s go for a spin’ and ‘It’ll all come out in the wash’, that nod to the site’s former use as a laundry. Now it’s home to the Old Laundry Yard, West London’s newest street-food market, where 72 shipping containers are quickly becoming a favourite neighbourhood hangout. U+I is the brains behind this creative, multi-faceted space, which is also a base for community workshops and events. The food on offer includes Nigerian barbecue chicken with plantain from family-run Jollof Mama, grilled cheese sandwiches and skin-off chips from Pom Fries, gluten-free brownies from Maxine Cooks and Venezuelan flavours from Papelon.

This sweet little café just off Uxbridge Road is painted bright yellow, so you can’t miss it. On a warm day the large, open-plan space is perfect for soaking up the sun and latte sipping. And if it’s not so warm, the friendly staff and cheeriness of it all will surely distract you. The food is unfussy but delicious, with a focus on healthy, Aussie-inspired dishes. Order the granola (tropical if it’s on the menu) and the nutty bread with eggs, avocado and spicy chorizo. Whether you come for brunch, lunch, or just a drink or two, you will leave happy as a clam.

Thin and crispy pizzas are pumped out of a wood-fired oven at The Oak W12, a second outpost of the original Notting Hill favourite. The buzzing pub and dining room is set in a gorgeous Victorian building, and the food has a modern-Italian slant; cicchetti of Parma-ham croquettes with aioli, and paprika-fried squid, followed by venison carpaccio with pickled wild mushrooms, pumpkin risotto, and those brilliant pizzas, topped with 'nduja, burrata and lots more besides. This place has brought a much-needed hit of energy to this pocket of west London.

The vibrant Sindercombe Social only opened a couple of years ago, but has become a local mainstay despite stiff competition from Brewdog, which is just across the road. The American-themed food menu, billed as ‘the best in melty, stringy, dripping, finger-licking indulgence’, has been devised by pop-up specialists Ruby Jean’s, and is burger-heavy, with some deliciously weird options like a chicken katsu curry burger. There’s a plenitude of drinks on offer at the 360 degree bar, with an extensive list of real ales, exposed brickwork, vintage records on the walls, DJs at the weekends and a programme of live music.

A firm local favourite, consistently billed as the area’s best, this Young’s pub boasts an impressive, carefully selected drinks menu. The constantly rotating selection of draught lagers and beers has a British focus and is sourced direct from brewers, while European bottled beers and American craft beers are also stocked, leading the Defector’s to be included in CAMRA’s list of top ten pubs in West London five years in a row. There’s also an unusually good cocktail list for a pub, with traditional staples like mojitos alongside contemporary classics such as the espresso martini, and some interesting in-house concoctions.
